Dear Colleagues, After serving since January, 2009 as our School's Director of Graduate Studies (DGS), Prof. Litster recently requested relief from this service, to devote more time to his teaching and research. Reluctantly, I accepted his request. On behalf of our School's faculty, staff and graduate students, I express deep gratitude to Jim for his outstanding service in this role. Simultaneously, I am pleased to inform that, effective July 1, Prof. Mike Harris has accepted to become our School's DGS. In this capacity, he will advise the graduate students and oversee the operations of the graduate office. I am grateful that Mike has accepted this position of leadership and service. New Business Manager

Good afternoon, I am glad to inform you that we have a new Business Manager. Heather Toro will join us part time on August 13 and starting from September 4 she will be in Chemical Engineering full time. Heather comes with a wealth of experience from Purdue's Sponsored Programs Services (SPS), where she started in 2006. She worked as an Account Manager, then as Senior Account Manager with an emphasis on the Department of Energy; in 2009 she was promoted to Senior Operations Manager for SPS. Heather holds a BS in Communications from Purdue and an MBA from Indiana Wesleyan University. Please join me in welcoming Heather to our School. Congratulations to Jim Litster!

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to inform that Jim Litster will receive the 2012 Thomas Baron Award in Fluid-Particle Systems. The award is given by the Particle Technology Forum of the AIChE, and will be presented at the AIChE Annual meeting in Pittsburgh this October. Jim's citation reads: “For seminal and field-defining contributions in the area of particle design and formulation, with particular emphasis on the science and engineering of wet granulation systems.” With this and the previously announced awards for Nick Delgass and Rex Reklaitis, the AIChE meeting this year will be memorable. Update for cylinder handling procedures

Hello, This is the update of cylinder handling procedures. We try to improve this procedure to be more safe for those who get-put cylinders to the storage-delivery area and those who use nearby pathway for walk and ride. Two updates include: 1. Use Traffic Cones and don't leave cylinders unstrapped. 2. Oxidizing gases (e.g. oxygen, nitrous oxide, nitrogen dioxide, ...), gases that supports combustion by definition, can't be stored with flammables. Put such cylinders to nonflammable gases. ChE Staff Retreat
