Truskett, Chair McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering University of Texas at Austin "Inverse Design of Interactions for Assembly" Tuesday, September 6, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Nanometer-scale, colloidally-stable particles suspended in a fluid can be driven to assemble into a wide variety of different structures depending on the control parameters of the system and the nature of the effective interparticle interactions. In many cases, the relevant interactions are tunable via external fields, physical or chemical modification of the particle surfaces, or changes in the composition of the suspending solvent. In this talk, we explore simple models for the 'inverse' design of such interactions for cluster or superlattice forming systems. We also touch upon practical aspects associated with realizing and characterizing the designed structures. Bio: Tom Truskett is the Les and Sherri Stuewer Endowed Professor and Department Chair in Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. He earned Bachelor of Science and Doctoral degrees in chemical engineering from the University of Texas at Austin and Princeton University, respectively, and was a postdoctoral fellow in biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. In 2002, he joined the faculty of Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. His group studies how interfaces and confinement impact the behavior of soft matter including molecular fluids, colloidal suspensions, protein solutions, and glasses. Tom is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineers. He is also recipient of an Alfred P. Sloan Research Fellowship, a David and Lucile Packard Foundation Fellowship, a National Science Foundation's CAREER Award, TAMEST's O'Donnell Award for Engineering, and AIChE's Allan P. Colburn Award. This seminar will increase your awareness of what implicit bias is as it relates to gender, and how and when gender-based implicit bias is manifested, particularly in academic STEM environments. Research on the impacts on the target of bias will be presented, as well as strategies to become aware of our biases and reduce our use of them. Bio: Dr. Beth Holloway is the Director of the Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) and the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Engineering at Purdue. Her research areas include differential retention issues for students across engineering disciplines; engineering admissions practices; and women and leadership, particularly in male dominated careers. She received the 2013 Purdue Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion award for her work on behalf of undergraduate students, particularly women. Holloway received the 2015 ASEE William E. Wickenden Award for the best article in the Journal of Engineering Education for 2014. She has been the advisor for the Purdue section of the Society of Women Engineers since 2001, and received the 2012 Society of Women Engineers Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. Holloway was president of the Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) in 2006-07. She was the chair of the Women in Engineering Division of ASEE in 2014-16. Holloway received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education, all from Purdue University.

Good Afternoon! As your United Way Ambassador this year, it's my pleasure to share with you that the 2016 United Way campaign officially kicks-off on September 1st! All Purdue employees will receive an email solicitation on Thursday, September 1, as part of the Purdue United Way campaign kickoff. This email will explain how you can make your pledge via the ePledge website. There will not be any paper pledge packets. Articles in Purdue Today and HR Connect will run this week and will cover ePledge and campaign information. Please consider supporting some University-wide events that are coming in September: * Splash or Cash Challenge Event - Sept. 16: This is essentially the Purdue fountain run version of the Ice Bucket Challenge * Dine to Donate $1 - Sept. 19-30: Purdue Dining retail locations where visitors will be asked to donate a $1 to United Way at food checkout The College of Engineering will also be hosting some events in the coming weeks.....details forthcoming! FW: 25th Annual Research Symposium

Hello everyone! The 25th Annual Graduate Research Symposium is tomorrow! I just had a couple of last minute reminders related to the event. - Our keynote speaker is Dr. Godwin Tongo, from BP Petrochemicals Technology. His bio is attached, and the abstract is below for his talk, "Accurate Physical Properties in Process Design." The talk will take place in FRNY G140 from 10 am to 11 am. All are welcome. Reliable physical properties are the foundation of designs of chemical plants. Physical properties matter and getting accurate data and models is important. Poor choices of physical property data can cost millions and poor physical property model selection can have an enormous effect on simulation results especially for distillation. Some of the sources for physical properties will be explored including DIPPr. - I have attached the overall schedule for the day.
