Reminder - Atom unavailable Wed 8pm - Thurs 8am

A reminder that ChE's main server "Atom" will be unavailable from 8pm Wednesday evening until 8am Thursday morning so the operating system, can be upgraded.. Please log out of your computers before you leave for the day on Wednesday. Also if you try to log into your supported machines before 8am it is very possible you will see serious problems. If you have a self-supported machine or a non-Windows machine you may not see as many issued but be away that any connections you have to Atom will not work between 8pm Wednesday and 8am Thursday. If your email service is on Atom it will also be down during that time. Final renovation of Forney Hall

Dear Colleagues, As you may have read in the news already.... I am pleased to inform you that last Friday, July 18, Purdue University's Board of Trustees approved the financing and construction of a $6.8 million renovation to the east wing of Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering. Often referred to as the "stacked labs," this project is part of the College of Engineering's strategic growth plan and the renovations will improve electrical, climate control and fume-ventilation systems to accommodate the research and educational needs of our growing faculty. Construction is scheduled to begin in June 2015, in preparation for occupancy in September 2016. This renovation project is being funded with repair and rehabilitation funds secured through a University-wide proposal process focused on the University's highest priorities for research and teaching laboratory renovations that resulted in the School of Chemical Engineering being awarded $6.02 million. Thanks to prudent financial planning and careful stewardship of resources over the years, the remainder will come from School funds. It should be noted that this effort will complete the renovation of Forney Hall of Chemical Engineering, a process that began in 2005 - we raised the prior $10.5 million primarily from alumni and friends. After 10+ years and total $17.3 million expenditures, we'll finally be done soon with renovation of the 1940 building! With best wishes, Arvind Varma R. Working collaboratively with the Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships, Dr. Hirleman will enhance nontraditional funding streams for Purdue researchers from U.S. and global private sector organizations, including government, foundations and NGOs. Dr. Hirleman returns to Purdue after having served as Dean of the School of Engineering at the University of California, Merced, since 2010. At Purdue he was professor and William E. and Florence E. Perry Head of the School of Mechanical Engineering from 2001 to 2010. During that time he founded and directed the Global Engineering Program and received the Outstanding Mechanical Engineer Award for his exemplary accomplishments and leadership in industry, academia and governmental service. In his new role, Dr. Hirleman will be responsible for advancing research and education partnerships with the private sector and building global partnerships with international institutions of higher education, NGOs and global companies. He will direct the Global Policy Institute and oversee Purdue's International Programs operations. Dr. Hirleman will act as facilitator in support of international opportunities for students, faculty and researchers. In addition, he will coordinate Purdue's efforts with industry and foundations to offer a point of contact for company representatives to collaborate and partner with Purdue. Please join me in welcoming Dr. Hirleman to his new position as the University's Chief Corporate and Global Partnerships Officer. He brings a depth of experience in teaching, research and global engagement and has been internationally recognized for his accomplishments in advancing programs for global collaborations. We will announce this news to campus via Purdue Today, and will issue a news release shortly thereafter.

Printing equipment availability this afternoon

FYI...Due to the copy room floor scheduled to be cleaned/waxed tonight (Friday) and all the furniture/equipment being removed, the printing equipment will be unavailable after 3:00 this afternoon. I will still be in the dock area after 3:00 moving and organizing the items, so please feel free to pick up packages, retrieve cylinder carts etc. as needed. Sorry for any inconveniences. Thank you.
