REMINDER: Grad Seminar for Oct. 25: [cid:image001.png@01D22DDB.ECCA3BD0]<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE> Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering GRADUATE SEMINAR SERIES Dr. Bamin Khomami, Head and Granger and Beaman Distinguished University Professor Dept. of Chemical Engineering and Biomolecular Engineering University of Tennessee "From Single Macromolecular Dynamics to Shear Banding: Paving the Way for Knowledge Board Design and Manufacture of Polymeric Products" Tuesday, October 25, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Quantitative understanding of the influence of environmental variables on the dynamic evolution of microstructure in polymeric fluids plays a central role in soft matter physics as well as the processing of a wide variety of micro-structured materials. To this end, accurate models and robust and efficient simulation techniques that can quantitatively predict the flow-micro structure coupling in complex fluids are essential in knowledge-based design and manufacture of polymer-based products, which constitute a significant portion (>15%) of manufacturing economy of united states today. This segment of the economy is forecasted to nearly double in the next decade due to the significant national investment in additive manufacturing. In this presentation, I will briefly review the progress made in fundamental understanding of non-equilibrium dynamics of polymeric melts as well as the remaining challenges in development of a unified approach for predicting dynamics of this class of fluids in processing flows. Specifically, I will discuss: (1) The ability of the state-of-the theories to capture the dynamics of polymeric melts under flow, and (2) Our atomistic and mesocopic simulations of flow of entangled polymeric fluids that, for the first time, elucidate the intricate connection between single chain dynamics and the macroscopic response of the fluid including the intriguing phenomenon of shear banding. Bio: Bamin Khomami graduated from the Ohio State University with a B.S. in Chemical Engineering and a minor in Mathematics in 1983 (Summa Cum Laude) and obtained his M.S. and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering at the University of Illinois-Urbana in 1985 and 1987, respectively. He joined Washington University in 1987 as an Assistant Professor and was named the Francis F. Ahmann Professor of Chemical Engineering in 1997. In fall of 2006 he joined the University of Tennessee in Knoxville as the Granger & Beaman Distinguished University Professor and Head of the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department. In 2008, he was named the founding director of the Sustainable Energy Education and Research. Currently he holds appointments in both Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering as well as Mechanical, Aerospace and Biomedical Engineering at the University of Tennessee. In addition, between 1992 to 2006, he served as a visiting Professor of Chemical Engineering at Stanford University, Universidad Nacional De Education A Distancia, and the Technical University of Denmark. In 2015, he co-founded Celtig LLC to produce high-quality graphene nanoplatelets or flakes (marketed under the trade name Cicarbo(tm)) and to distribute commercial quantities of this line of products to markets worldwide. Computational models generated from these reconstructions can be used to predict microbial responses to genetic and environmental perturbations. We have recently developed new algorithms for proposing metabolic engineering strategies based on metabolic and regulatory model predictions. Using these computational approaches, we identified genetic strategies for enhancing production of pyruvate from glucose and co-utilization of xylose from plant hydrolysates. These examples illustrate how integrating computational and experimental approaches can lead to novel metabolic engineering strategies and accelerate metabolic engineering efforts. Bio: Jennifer Reed is a Harvey D. Spangler Faculty Scholar in the College of Engineering and an Associate Professor in the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She received her B.S in Bioengineering: Biotechnology and Ph.D. in Bioengineering from the University of California, San Diego. She has received a number of awards for her research including an NSF Career Award, DOE Early Career Award, and a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE). She is an American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering Fellow and a Kavli Fellow. Building Temp

Be Advised - You have probably noticed the temp in the building is warmer than normal. There is a major project going on outside in the tunnel and the chilled water supplies to Physics and our building has been shut down to install valves and meters. It is being done since it is October Break and with the idea that the outside temp would offset no chilled water. I have contacted Zones to see if they can adjust to get it cooler. The chilled water is not scheduled to be turned back on until this afternoon or in the morning. Thanks.

Dauenhauer Dept. of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science University of Minnesota "New Approaches to Big Chemistry and Biomass" Tuesday, October 4, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass utilizes high temperature chemical decomposition to produce liquids via pyrolysis, solids via torrefaction, or gases via gasification which are subsequently converted to liquid biofuels or biochemicals. However, these systems are comprised of thousands of molecules and millions of chemical reactions within three phases, making them intractable by conventional research techniques. In this seminar, three new research techniques are introduced including PHASR (Pulse-Heated Analysis of Solid/Surface Reactions), the Universal Carbon Detector (UCD), and DRiSP (Diffuse Reflectance in situ Spectroscopy of Particles) which enable the first molecular-level measurements of the millisecond kinetics of complex reacting systems. Bio: Paul J. Dauenhauer is the DuPont Young Professor and Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. He serves as Co-Director of the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin Madison and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. He worked for the Dow Chemical Company as a Senior Research Engineer in Midland, MI, and Freeport, TX. His work on catalysis and reaction engineering of renewable feedstocks has been highlighted by numerous awards including the DOE Early Career, NSF CAREER, the Rutherford Aris Excellence in Reaction Engineering Award, and the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. His is the co-founder of Sironix Renewables and inventor of the flagship technology for Activated Research Company.
