This is an important topic for our School, I hope you will all find the time to attend, even if we have to close the main office and the business office. You may be aware that this year our School launched the Purdue Pipeline Center, with the vision for all women in chemical engineering to reach and shape their full potential. This seminar is just the first step in a series of educational activities meant to raise awareness of issues faced in the workplace and improve the culture to ensure everyone can reach their full potential. I definitely hope to see all our staff and faculty attend this event. Bio: Dr. Beth Holloway is the Director of the Women in Engineering Program (WIEP) and the Assistant Dean for Undergraduate Education in the College of Engineering at Purdue. Her research areas include differential retention issues for students across engineering disciplines; engineering admissions practices; and women and leadership, particularly in male dominated careers. She received the 2013 Purdue Helen B. Schleman Gold Medallion award for her work on behalf of undergraduate students, particularly women. Holloway received the 2015 ASEE William E. Wickenden Award for the best article in the Journal of Engineering Education for 2014. She has been the advisor for the Purdue section of the Society of Women Engineers since 2001, and received the 2012 Society of Women Engineers Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award. Holloway was president of the Women in Engineering ProActive Network (WEPAN) in 2006-07. She was the chair of the Women in Engineering Division of ASEE in 2014-16. Holloway received B.S. and M.S. degrees in Mechanical Engineering and a Ph.D. in Engineering Education, all from Purdue University. Dauenhauer Dept. of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science University of Minnesota "New Approaches to Big Chemistry and Biomass" Tuesday, October 4, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Thermochemical conversion of lignocellulosic biomass utilizes high temperature chemical decomposition to produce liquids via pyrolysis, solids via torrefaction, or gases via gasification which are subsequently converted to liquid biofuels or biochemicals. However, these systems are comprised of thousands of molecules and millions of chemical reactions within three phases, making them intractable by conventional research techniques. In this seminar, three new research techniques are introduced including PHASR (Pulse-Heated Analysis of Solid/Surface Reactions), the Universal Carbon Detector (UCD), and DRiSP (Diffuse Reflectance in situ Spectroscopy of Particles) which enable the first molecular-level measurements of the millisecond kinetics of complex reacting systems. Bio: Paul J. Dauenhauer is the DuPont Young Professor and Associate Professor of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota. He serves as Co-Director of the Catalysis Center for Energy Innovation. He received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering and Chemistry from the University of Wisconsin Madison and Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from the University of Minnesota. He worked for the Dow Chemical Company as a Senior Research Engineer in Midland, MI, and Freeport, TX. His work on catalysis and reaction engineering of renewable feedstocks has been highlighted by numerous awards including the DOE Early Career, NSF CAREER, the Rutherford Aris Excellence in Reaction Engineering Award, and the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. His is the co-founder of Sironix Renewables and inventor of the flagship technology for Activated Research Company. Lobo Center for Catalytic Science and Technology Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering University of Delaware “Valorization of Natural Gas and Biomass-Derived Compounds via Zeolite Catalysis” Tuesday, September 13, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: My research group is interested in developing and understanding catalysis systems to enable the transformation abundant, inexpensive and—when possible—renewable carbon sources into feedstocks for the chemical industry. We combine expertise in materials synthesis, catalysis and kinetics, and reaction engineering to develop novel catalysts and catalytic processes that produce valuable products. In the first part of the talk I will discuss a number of alternative pathways to transform furans (typically produced from glucose or xylose by dehydration) into valuable commodity chemicals. To this end we have developed and optimized zeolite catalyst compositions to form aromatic species out of the furans via Diels-Alder chemistry. We will describe efforts to producing benzoic acid and -methylstyrene from furans in high selectivity and high yield, along with the elucidation of the reaction mechanisms of these reactions. In the second part I will discuss on-going research directed towards the development of catalysts for the selective oxidation of methane into methanol. We will show that zeolites can serve as hosts of transition metals oxide clusters (copper or iron) that are analogous to metal oxide clusters observed in a number of important enzymes such as particulate methane monooxygenase (pMMO). These clusters are capable of oxidizing methane to methanol, carbon monoxide and CO2. By selectively choosing materials that compartmentalize Cu-O clusters, we have identified zeolite structures that are able to selectively oxidize methane to methanol with very high selectivity in a three-step cyclic process. We will describe the potential and the drawbacks of transforming such cyclic process into a catalytic process for methanol production. Despite the maturity of the field of catalysis this talk will show that tantalizing new opportunities emerge from the discovery of new catalyst structures and compositions, and from improvements in our control of the composition of metal clusters in nanoscopic environments. Biography: Raul F. Lobo is the Claire D. LeClaire professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware and Director of the Center for Catalytic Science and Technology. His research interests span the development of novel porous materials for catalysis and separations, the chemistry of zeolites, catalysis for energy and the environment, and the scientific aspects of catalyst synthesis. He has published over one hundred forty refereed reports and he is co-inventor in three US patents. He obtained his undergraduate degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Costa Rica in 1989 and later moved to California to pursue graduate studies in Chemical Engineering at Caltech. He worked for one year at Los Alamos National Laboratory, New Mexico as a postdoctoral fellow and he started his academic career at the University of Delaware in 1995. Jill K.
