Next safety awareness training session

Hello everyone, I have scheduled a safety awareness training session for this coming Thursday, September 26, 2019, from 4:30 - 5:30 pm in FRNY 2107. All new employees and researchers need to have this initial safety training. If you have new people who recently joined your groups for research, they will need safety training before they can start working in our building (e.g. visitors, exchange students, post-docs, Professional Master students, etc.), please ask them to attend this session. Most of our undergraduate students already have the initial training and would need to take the online refresher when they do undergraduate research. Students from other departments or universities doing research in our labs will need this initial training. Should you have any questions, please let me know. S. (1987) and M. S. (1989) in Chemistry from Seoul National University (SNU), Korea. He obtained his Ph.D. in Chemistry from U. Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (1996), and conducted one-year postdoctoral research at the Catalysis Center of Northwestern University. Since he joined the faculty of the School of Chemical and Biological Engineering of Seoul National University in 1997, he has focused on the synthesis and applications of uniform-sized nanoparticles and related nanostructured materials, and published > 350 papers in prominent international journals (> 52,000 citations and h-index of > 120). He is a SNU Distinguished Professor. In 2011, he was selected as "Top 100 Chemists" of the decade by UNESCO&IUPAC. For the last > 5 years, he has chosen as "Highly Cited Researcher" in Chemistry and Materials Science areas by Clarivate Analytics. Since 2012, he has been serving as a Director of Center for Nanoparticle Research of Institute for Basic Science (IBS). He is Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Materials Research Society (MRS). He received many awards including the Korea S&T Award from the Korean President (2016), Hoam Prize (2012, Samsung Hoam Foundation), POSCO-T. J. He has been serving as editorial (advisory) board members of ACS Central Science, Advanced Materials, Nano Today, and Small. ******* ******* "Chemistry for Nano, and Nano for Medicine & Energy" Tuesday, September 24, 2019 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium - Abstract: Over the last 20 years, our laboratory has focused on the designed chemical synthesis, assembly and applications of uniform-sized nanocrystals. Especially, we developed a novel generalized procedure, called as "heat-up process" for the direct synthesis of uniform-sized nanocrystals of many metals, oxides, and chalcogenides.1 For the last 10 years, our group has been focused on medical applications of various uniform-sized nanoparticles. We reported that uniform 2 nm iron oxide nanoclusters can be successfully used as T1 MRI contrast agent for high-resolution MR angiography of monkeys.2 We reported the first successful demonstration of high-resolution in vivo 3-photon imaging using biocompatible and bright Mn2+/ZnS nanocrystals.3 I will present recent advances on the fabrication of stretchable electronic & optoelectronic devices integrated with various functional nanomaterials and their applications to wearable & implantable healthcare devices. We reported graphene-hybrid electrochemical devices integrated with thermo-responsive micro-needles for the sweat-based diabetes monitoring and feedback therapy.4 We introduced electromechanical cardioplasty using an epicardial mesh made of electrically conductive and elastic Ag nanowire-rubber composite material to resemble the innate cardiac tissue and confer cardiac conduction system function.5 We report a highly sensitive and selective K+ nanosensor that can quantitatively monitor extracellular K+ concentration changes in the brains of freely moving mice experiencing epileptic seizures.6 Recently we have focused on the architecture engineering of nanomaterials for their applications to lithium ion battery, fuel cell electrocatalysts, solar cells, and thermoelectrics. We reported the first demonstration of galvanic replacement reactions in metal oxide nanocrystals, and were able to synthesize hollow nanocrystals of various multimetallic oxides including Mn3O4/γ-Fe2O3.7 We report a simple synthetic method of carbon-based hybrid cellular nanosheets loaded with SnO2 nanoparticles.8 We designed hollow anatase TiO2 nanostructures composed of interconnected ~5 nm-sized nanocrystals, which can individually reach the theoretical lithium storage limit and maintain a stable capacity during prolonged cycling.9 We present a synthesis of highly durable and active electrocatalysts based on ordered fct-PtFe nanoparticles and FeP nanoparticles coated with N-doped carbon shell.10 The effect of porous structures on the electrocatalytic activity of N-doped carbon is studied by using electrochemical analysis techniques, and the results are applied to synthesize highly active and stable Fe-N-C catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).11 We report on the design and synthesis of highly active TiO2 photocatalysts incorporated with site-specific single copper atoms (Cu/TiO2) that exhibit reversible & cooperative photoactivation process, and enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity.12 We synthesized multigrain nanocrystals consisting of Co3O4 nanocube cores and Mn3O4 shells. At the sharp edges of the Co3O4 nanocubes, we observed that tilt boundaries of the Mn3O4 grains exist in the form of disclinations, and we obtained a correlation between the defects and the resulting electrocatalytic behavior for the oxygen reduction reaction.13 1. Yadav is an expert materials scientist and electrochemist, working as the Director of Advanced Battery Development at Urban Electric Power (UEP) in New York. He earned his doctoral degree in chemical engineering from Purdue University, where he specialized in synthesizing 1D complex metal oxide nanowires for thermoelectric applications and lithium(Li)-ion batteries. Prior to joining UEP, Dr. Yadav worked as a Senior Scientist at the CUNY Energy Institute, where he led the advancement of highly energy dense aqueous-based batteries based on manganese dioxide (MnO2) and zinc (Zn) as a replacement for the expensive and dangerous Li-ion batteries for grid-storage applications. He is the primary inventor of the reversible second-electron MnO2 technology and the breakthrough high voltage (2.45-2.8V) MnO2|Zn battery, which are published in Nature Communications and ACS Energy Letters, respectively. He has authored 19 publications and filed over 26 patents on MnO2|Zn technology, which have been licensed by UEP. At UEP, Dr. Yadav is leading a team of engineers and scientists to bring the second-electron MnO2 and high voltage (2.45-2.8V) MnO2|Zn battery to commercialization. ******* ******* "Engineering an Aqueous Energy Dense Manganese Dioxide|Zinc Battery to Challenge Lithium-Ion's Dominance" Tuesday, September 17, 2019 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium - Abstract: The current landscape of energy storage systems is dominated by lithium-ion batteries because of their high energy densities, and continuous improvement in performance through the last few decades for use in a number of applications. They certainly have been a boon for rapid societal development; however, they also have had major disadvantages like high cost, severe toxicity, high chances of flammability and ethical concerns about the use of cobalt. Aqueous batteries containing manganese dioxide (MnO2) and zinc (Zn) have the theoretical capacities to deliver high energy densities comparable to some variations of lithium-ion batteries, have low cost and toxicity, and high material abundance to be used as an alternative battery compared to the current status quo. However, MnO2 and Zn have been highly irreversible and accessing close to their theoretical capacities has been very challenging. The current status quo in aqueous batteries has been to intercalate Zn and H-ions into layered structures to deliver modest capacities, which also has unfortunately resulted in limited energy densities. These layered structures, although novel, face limitations like their layered counterparts in lithium (Li)-ion batteries, where the capacity is limited to the host's intercalation capacity. Low voltage of ~1.1-1.4V is another Achilles heel of aqueous Zn-anode batteries, where it is simply not comparable to the high voltage properties of Li-ion. MnO2|Zn batteries can compete with Li-ion because of its safe and abundant raw materials, nonflammable electrolyte and theoretical energy density, however, sufficient advances are required for it to be considered a true challenger. In this talk, we will present a new strategy to enable a new generation of energy dense aqueousbased batteries, where we exploit the conversion reactions of MnO2 and Zn electrodes to extract significantly higher capacity compared to intercalation systems. Accessing the conversion reactions allows us to achieve theoretical capacities of 617 mAh/g (~30 mAh/cm2) from MnO2 and 810 mAh/g (~30 mAh/cm2) from Zn anodes, respectively. The high areal capacities help to attain unprecedented energy densities of 210 Wh/L, which is the highest of all aqueous-based batteries. We will also present our work on identifying new Mn-based conversion compounds that give higher capacities and demonstrate its application in the case of small-scale automobile. We will also present our breakthrough work on breaking the 2V barrier in aqueous Zn batteries, where we have demonstrated for the first time in the field of energy storage 2.45V and 2.8V MnO2|Zn aqueous batteries capable of accessing the theoretical capacity, which can truly challenge Li-ion's dominance. Papanicolas (BSChE '65) Mitchel J. Papanicolas is President and Owner of Del Ray Glass, Inc. Since the early 1950s, Del Ray Glass Co., Inc. has provided glass services for commercial, residential, and governmental projects throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Papanicolas earned his BS in Chemical Engineering in 1965, graduating in the top 10% of his class. He earned an MS in Industrial Engineering, with an emphasis on manufacturing management, in 1967. He went on to receive his MBA from George Washington University. In 1967, Papanicolas was a Development Engineer for Rohm & Haas Chemical Company. As a junior executive at Rohm & Haas, he was responsible for production control of the agricultural chemicals division. In 1970, Papanicolas took over as President and Owner of Del Ray Glass, Inc. from his stepfather, who began the company over 50 years ago. He expanded company sales from $100,000 per year in 1970 to $20 million currently, with a staff of more than 100 people. All members of the Del Ray Glass, Inc. management team hold degrees from Purdue University's College of Engineering. Del Ray Glass, Inc.'s business is 80% commercial, with the remainder of their business serving residential clients. The company specializes in custom glass showers, custom mirror work, varied work for all major hotels and commercial properties, storefronts, new low-rise office buildings, and new schools. Del Rey Glass, Inc. has worked with major clients such as Amazon, Volkswagen, and others. [cid:image001.jpg@01D55CB6.61D2DCF0] Craig A. Smith (BSChE '72) Craig A. Smith earned his B.S. with honors in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1972. After graduation, he earned his M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern. In 1975, he accepted a position with Exxon Research and Development Labs (ERDL) in Baton Rouge, where he was responsible for all downstream research. His work there was dedicated to pioneering research in the areas of coal liquefaction and gasification as well as developing new catalysts for conventional downstream processing. After eight years at ERDL, Smith moved to Exxon's Research and Engineering (ERE) facility in Florham Park, NJ, providing tech support, trouble shooting, and design/engineering services to their lubricant manufacturing facilities worldwide. His work in new technology development and implementation sought ways to profitably employ promising new technologies in existing lube operations, including development of Exxon's proprietary new synthetics lubes processing technology first commercialized in Europe. He led planning, feasibility, and logistics studies for this operation. After 13 years at Exxon, Smith decided it was time for a change. Since college, he had dreamed of starting and running his own business. Career-wise, he had transitioned from the technical side to business and finance, and he had also enjoyed the increased client services responsibilities that had come with it. The financial services industry made a lot of sense to him. In 1988, Smith accepted a position in the private client group of Shearson Lehman Brothers, which through a series of mergers and acquisitions, later became Morgan Stanley. Over the course of 29 years, he built a practice dedicated to serving the complex financial needs of high net worth clients and their families. For the last 15 years, Smith led a team of investment professionals that managed $600 million in client assets. Smith and his wife of 31 years, Jacqui, are semi-retired and make their home in New Jersey. They are proud parents of Kristen, who has just been accepted into Rutgers graduate forensics sciences program. Thunhorst is employed by 3M Company and currently serves as Staff Scientist in the Safety and Industrial Business Research and Development Laboratory. During her 21 years at 3M, she has worked in the Corporate Research Organization, as well as three Business Groups and five Divisions. Thunhorst's previous roles have included Process Engineer, Product Development Engineer, Six Sigma Black Belt, Technical Team Leader, and Program Manager. Her areas of technical focus include photopolymers, nanotechnology, organic resins, composites, ceramics, and optical materials, applied to products ranging from tapes, air filters, decorative products, and composite pressure vessels, to abrasives. Thunhorst has 22 issued U.S. patents. Her work has been recognized with numerous leadership and technical awards, notably including the 2018 AIChE Industrial Research and Development Award, 2019 University of Colorado Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award, Corporate Circle of Technical Excellence and Innovation Awards, PSI Leadership award, and Best Overall Technical Paper Award at American Composite Manufacturer's Association Technical Meeting. Her teams have been responsible for significant financial contributions to 3M. She supports and develops the next generation of scientists and leaders through extensive mentoring, including serving as a mentor for the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for many years. She holds a BS in Chemical Engineering degree from Purdue University, where she served as the President of the Student Chapter of AIChE, participated in the co-operative education program and Mortarboard, was selected as one of 100 Purdue Outstanding Seniors, and received a National Science Foundation Fellowship. Papanicolas (BSChE '65) Mitchel J. Papanicolas is President and Owner of Del Ray Glass, Inc. Since the early 1950s, Del Ray Glass Co., Inc. has provided glass services for commercial, residential, and governmental projects throughout the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area. Papanicolas earned his BS in Chemical Engineering in 1965, graduating in the top 10% of his class. He earned an MS in Industrial Engineering, with an emphasis on manufacturing management, in 1967. He went on to receive his MBA from George Washington University. In 1967, Papanicolas was a Development Engineer for Rohm & Haas Chemical Company. As a junior executive at Rohm & Haas, he was responsible for production control of the agricultural chemicals division. In 1970, Papanicolas took over as President and Owner of Del Ray Glass, Inc. from his stepfather, who began the company over 50 years ago. He expanded company sales from $100,000 per year in 1970 to $20 million currently, with a staff of more than 100 people. All members of the Del Ray Glass, Inc. management team hold degrees from Purdue University's College of Engineering. Del Ray Glass, Inc.'s business is 80% commercial, with the remainder of their business serving residential clients. The company specializes in custom glass showers, custom mirror work, varied work for all major hotels and commercial properties, storefronts, new low-rise office buildings, and new schools. Del Rey Glass, Inc. has worked with major clients such as Amazon, Volkswagen, and others. [cid:image001.jpg@01D55CB6.61D2DCF0] Craig A. Smith (BSChE '72) Craig A. Smith earned his B.S. with honors in Chemical Engineering from Purdue University in 1972. After graduation, he earned his M.S. in Chemical Engineering from Northwestern. In 1975, he accepted a position with Exxon Research and Development Labs (ERDL) in Baton Rouge, where he was responsible for all downstream research. His work there was dedicated to pioneering research in the areas of coal liquefaction and gasification as well as developing new catalysts for conventional downstream processing. After eight years at ERDL, Smith moved to Exxon's Research and Engineering (ERE) facility in Florham Park, NJ, providing tech support, trouble shooting, and design/engineering services to their lubricant manufacturing facilities worldwide. His work in new technology development and implementation sought ways to profitably employ promising new technologies in existing lube operations, including development of Exxon's proprietary new synthetics lubes processing technology first commercialized in Europe. He led planning, feasibility, and logistics studies for this operation. After 13 years at Exxon, Smith decided it was time for a change. Since college, he had dreamed of starting and running his own business. Career-wise, he had transitioned from the technical side to business and finance, and he had also enjoyed the increased client services responsibilities that had come with it. The financial services industry made a lot of sense to him. In 1988, Smith accepted a position in the private client group of Shearson Lehman Brothers, which through a series of mergers and acquisitions, later became Morgan Stanley. Over the course of 29 years, he built a practice dedicated to serving the complex financial needs of high net worth clients and their families. For the last 15 years, Smith led a team of investment professionals that managed $600 million in client assets. Smith and his wife of 31 years, Jacqui, are semi-retired and make their home in New Jersey. They are proud parents of Kristen, who has just been accepted into Rutgers graduate forensics sciences program. Thunhorst is employed by 3M Company and currently serves as Staff Scientist in the Safety and Industrial Business Research and Development Laboratory. During her 21 years at 3M, she has worked in the Corporate Research Organization, as well as three Business Groups and five Divisions. Thunhorst's previous roles have included Process Engineer, Product Development Engineer, Six Sigma Black Belt, Technical Team Leader, and Program Manager. Her areas of technical focus include photopolymers, nanotechnology, organic resins, composites, ceramics, and optical materials, applied to products ranging from tapes, air filters, decorative products, and composite pressure vessels, to abrasives. Thunhorst has 22 issued U.S. patents. Her work has been recognized with numerous leadership and technical awards, notably including the 2018 AIChE Industrial Research and Development Award, 2019 University of Colorado Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award, Corporate Circle of Technical Excellence and Innovation Awards, PSI Leadership award, and Best Overall Technical Paper Award at American Composite Manufacturer's Association Technical Meeting. Her teams have been responsible for significant financial contributions to 3M. She supports and develops the next generation of scientists and leaders through extensive mentoring, including serving as a mentor for the Discovery Education 3M Young Scientist Challenge for many years. She holds a BS in Chemical Engineering degree from Purdue University, where she served as the President of the Student Chapter of AIChE, participated in the co-operative education program and Mortarboard, was selected as one of 100 Purdue Outstanding Seniors, and received a National Science Foundation Fellowship. She received her M.S. and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Colorado Boulder with a focus on Photopolymerization and Membrane Separations. Safety awareness training session - Thursday August 29

Hello everyone, I have scheduled a safety awareness training session for this coming Thursday, August 29, 2019, from 9:30 - 10:30 am in FRNY 3062B. All new employees and researchers need to have this initial safety training. If you have new people who recently joined your groups, they will need safety training before they can start working in our building (e.g. visitors, exchange students, post-docs, etc.). Please ask them to attend this session. Most of our undergraduate students already have the initial training and would need to take the online refresher when they do undergraduate research. Students from other departments or universities doing research in our labs will need this initial training. Should you have any questions, please let me know.
