His h-index is 78. ******* ******* "Water-mediated Heterogeneous Catalysis" Tuesday, October 29, 2019 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium - Abstract: Water is ubiquitous in a broad range of physicochemical phenomena and technological processes. For example, water is a desirable solvent for reasons of cost, safety, and environmental concerns. Solvent effects in chemical reactions are often connected to changes in solubility due to the polarity and other characteristics of the solvent, which can affect transport properties and indirectly overall reaction rates. In addition to the well-known solvation, heat transfer and sink effects, water can also form rich variety of structures at the water/solid interfaces to enhance the reaction performance and even change the kinetics of surface-catalyzed reactions. This is the main aspect that we want to address in our proposed review. One of the most common ways in which water can affect the intrinsic rate of reaction is the so-called differential solvation in which the solvent stabilizes the transition state to a greater extent from the initial state. As a result, a reduction in activation barrier takes place. Another, just recently recognized, role of water is its mediation in reactions involving H-transfer, thus providing a lower energy path. Several examples of this phenomenon exist in the literature, including some of our own work, which we would like to analyze. For example, in Fischer-Tropsch synthesis it has been proposed that water can function as a H-shuttling mediator by transferring a H from the surface onto the CO molecule and thus facilitating the rate-limiting H-assisted CO cleavage. Similar shuttling mechanism has been proposed for other reactions involving H-transfer, such as hydrogenation of furfural, aldol condensation, and other biomass upgrading reactions. One aspect that seems to be particularly intriguing is the "remote promotion effect" that only seems to occur in liquid aqueous systems, either involving remote proton hopping or remote bond polarization. Since this water-mediated mechanism seems to be a general phenomenon that can explain water promotion for a number of different reactions, we would like to do a critical analysis of all reactions that have shown to be enhanced by water. Other mechanisms of water promotion will also be explored. Lessons learned - Recent safety incidents in FRNY

I hope that sharing this information with you will prevent similar situations from happening in the future. She is also the recipient of a Laboratory Directed Research and Development Early Career Award at Sandia National Laboratories. ******* ******* "Bioengineering and National Security: Engineering Photosynthetic Microorganisms for Energy Security & Developing Biosensors for Nuclear Security" Tuesday, October 15, 2019 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium - Abstract: The mission of Sandia National Laboratories is to develop advanced technologies to ensure global peace. My laboratory seeks to address national security issues with bioengineering, and my research focuses on two main areas: engineering photosynthetic microorganisms for energy security and developing biosensors for nuclear security. Energy security is a key component of national security both domestically and abroad. The transportation and chemical industries are reliant on petroleum products, which are a major contributor to climate change and a finite resource. Photosynthetic microorganisms (algae and cyanobacteria) use sunlight to fix carbon dioxide into various organic chemicals, providing a renewable source of biofuels and biochemicals while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Although biomass can be directly converted into biocrude using hydrothermal liquefaction, the natural photosynthetic biomass productivities of algae and cyanobacteria are insufficient to support large-scale fuel production. My research focuses on genetic tool development and metabolic engineering of two saltwater species, Microchloropsis gaditana (alga) and Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 (cyanobacterium), to improve biomass productivity. I will discuss the development of genetic tools for gene expression and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in M. gaditana along with our recent work on developing CRISPR interference and CRISPR activation tools for high-throughput screening in Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. The rapid detection of chemicals associated with nuclear energy is critical for improving nuclear security and nuclear accident response. Nuclear energy disasters, such as the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 or the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, disperse radionuclides into the environment. While some radionuclides have a short half-life of days, others have much longer half-lives, such as the 30-year half-life of cesium-137. My laboratory develops biosensors for the detection of cesium and other elements associated with nuclear energy emissions. I will discuss protein engineering and synthetic biology efforts to develop microbial biosensors for the detection of metals, cesium, and noble gases. Purdue Alert system test today

Hello everyone, I wanted to remind you that Purdue will test the Purdue Alert layered system of notification, including sirens, today, September 26, at 10 am. This is the semi-annual test of the Purdue emergency warning notification system, that includes campus-wide emailing, text messaging, Twitter, information posted to the Campus Status page, All Hazards Outdoor Siren activation, Alertus beacons installed in large classrooms, desktop popup alerts on most classroom and lab computers, more than 200 digital signs, and Boiler TV emergency alert system activation. Although no action is required when the alert system is activated today, I wanted to remind you of our shelter-in-place procedures in case of a weather related emergency: - Calmly move to the basement of either the new or the old wing of the building. - Use one of the staircases: in the FRNY atrium, adjacent to the exit that faces Physics, adjacent to the exit facing Civil Engineering or adjacent to the exit facing the Engineering Mall. - Do not use the elevators. - Take your personal belongings with you, if possible. - Assist those who need help, if possible. - Stay in the shelter location until instructed by emergency personnel that it is safe to leave. Safety violation - electronic cigarette found in a FRNY lab

Hello everyone, I learned over the weekend that an electronic cigarette (Juul) was found recently in the pocket of a visitor lab coat, in one of our shared labs that also gives access to other graduate students/researchers on campus. It was impossible to determine who brought in the electronic cigarette, or if this device was used in the lab, or not. The device, including nicotine pod, was disposed of accordingly. I wanted to take this opportunity and remind everyone that smoking, drinking, eating, and the application of cosmetics are forbidden in the lab and are considered safety violations (see Chapter 5.1.2. "General laboratory safety rules" in the Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan (https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/programs/chp2014.pdf)) If you use one of the many types of electronic cigarettes available commercially, or traditional cigarettes or nicotine containing products, please keep them in your offices and use them only in specially designated areas outside campus (Purdue West Lafayette campus is considered a smoke-free campus).
