Lessons learned (recent safety incidents) and some safety reminders

Hello everyone, I wanted to share with you a recent safety incident and some near misses that occurred in our School after the restart of research operations in June (see attached document). The general recommendations at the end of the document provide good information for preventing safety incidents from happening. I am also sharing the updated "Gas Cylinder Handling Procedures for FRNY" document (with updates highlighted in yellow for easy identification); this needed to be updated in response to the recent safety incident. The updated document is also available on our website (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/index_html) under the "Laboratory Safety Requirements" section. Please familiarize yourself with the information in this important document. Safety reminders: 1. Face masks (face coverings) are required to be worn at all times in the building, unless you are alone in an office. Even when you are alone in an office, have a face mask close by to be able to put it on immediately when someone enters your office. 2. As of now, and at least until the end of July, the University guidelines are that all work that can be done remotely should continue to be completed this way. Thus, researchers should only come to campus (and to the building) if they are scheduled to work in the lab, and complete all other work (including computational research) remotely. Please follow the protocols in the "Covid-19 Research Space SOP" for your area, which was approved by the University. You signed that document to confirm you will follow the safety protocols stated in the document, which were put in place to limit the spread of the coronavirus. If your research space (e.g. office) doesn't have an approved Covid-19 research Space SOP, or you were not included on the SOP as person who can use that space, please continue to work from home until further notice. Safety Training Required for a Safe Return to Forney

Good afternoon, everyone, If you didn't complete the "ChE Safety training required for a safe return to FRNY" yet, please complete all the applicable modules and log the completion of training by next week on Friday, July 10, 2020. This training is required for everyone in our School, including faculty, staff, graduate students, postdocs, visitor scholars, etc., and is a required element for our ISP Annual Recertification with REM. By now, everyone should have completed the required "Covid-19 on-site specific safety training" required by the University (due date for completion was today, July1), thus part of the required ChE safety training is already completed. To complete the ChE required safety training for safe return to campus, please do the following: 1. Visit the ChE safety website (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety) and locate the "ChE Safety Training Required for a Safe Return to Forney" heading under "Training" 2. Complete all the applicable steps. Faculty with lab space will need to complete the "Lab specific CHP training" and submit a signed Lab Specific CHP Certification for their labs. The same applies to all researchers working in a lab 3. Once all applicable training modules are completed, log your training by completing the "Training sign-in sheet" located immediately after the training modules. To log your training, you will need the following documents: * PDF copy of the email received upon completion of ChE specific Annual Safety Refresher Training * Completed Lab Specific CHP Certification for the lab(s) you work in (if applicable) Please complete this required training by next week on Friday (July 10, 2020), even if you don't return to campus yet. Safety updates and reminders

Hello everyone, As we finally restart lab-based research operations in FRNY, I wanted to update you on a few important safety points. Safety Training: 1. As I mentioned in my email on Friday, the mandatory Covid-19 On-Site Employee Safety Training developed by REM was recently moved to SuccessFactors. Completion of this training is recorded in SuccessFactors (in "Training History"), and you will not receive an email confirmation upon completion. If you completed the training before June 8th, and logged the completion of this training in the old system (on REM's website), you will need to redo the training in SuccessFactors to count as training; there is a 1 question "verification quiz" at the end of the training in SuccessFactors). The "Covid-19 specific safety protocols for FRNY" document was updated to reflect this change, along with other needed changes (all changes made are highlighted in yellow). 3. The "ChE Safety Training Required for a Safe Return to Forney" on our safety webpage (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety) was updated to reflect these changes. 4. If you already logged the completion of your "ChE Return to Campus Safety Training" before the Covid-19 On-Site Employee Safety Training was moved to SuccessFactors, you do not need to log it again. 5. Staff members approved to return to the building should complete the Covid-19 On-Site Employee Safety Training in their SuccessFactors and the ChE specific annual safety refresher training relevant to their role. You will also need to log the completion of your training by completing the "Training sign-in sheet<https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_6hfVnmFl6TtwRJX>". Other important reminders: 1. Please honor your commitment to the Protect Purdue Pledge, practice social distancing and wear a face mask, as directed by the University, at all times in Forney, unless you are alone in an office. It came to my attention recently that some researchers do not follow this safety rule. I wanted to remind you that noncompliance with the University set rules and with the ChE specific safety protocols may result in dismissal from on-site work until social distancing guidelines are lifted. 2. Update regarding completion of Covid-19 On-Site Employee Safety Training

Hello Everyone, I wanted to let you know that the mandatory Covid-19 On-Site Employee Safety Training developed by REM was recently moved to SuccessFactors on June 8th. If you completed the training before this date and logged the completion of training in the old system (on REM's website), you will need to redo the training in SuccessFactors to count as training (there is a verification quiz at the end of the training in SuccessFactors). If you logged the completion of the "ChE Safety Training Required for a Safe Return to Forney" on the ChE website with this Purdue developed training taken in the old system, you don't have to re-log the training after completion of the training in SuccessFactors; we will accept the old proof of completion as uploaded during the initial logging process.
