Safety inspection of ALL labs and offices - NEXT WEEK

Hello everyone, In preparation for the ISP recertification with REM in March, members of the ChE Safety Committee will conduct safety inspections of ALL labs and offices, starting Monday, February 14, 2022. We will use the forms in the attached Excel workbook (form on first tab for labs, form on second tab for offices). Reports of the inspections will be sent to PIs and safety officers (for labs) and to occupants of labs (if needed). Any identified deficiencies will need to be corrected within the time specified on the forms. Instructions on how to follow up regarding correction of deficiencies will be communicated in due time. ChE Mandatory Annual Safety Refresher Training - complete NOW

Hello Everyone! It is now time to complete the online Annual Safety Refresher Training, which is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visiting researchers/scholars, and then log the completion of training. You can access the training material and take the quiz on any device linked to the internet, including mobile devices. This training is also required for our School's ISP recertification with REM. Please follow the instructions below and complete this safety refresher training by the end of Monday, February 28, 2022. Instructions: 1. Please only use these forms, as they are the most up-to-date forms that are now used at University level. I also attach the most updated form, for your convenience. One form needs to be completed for EACH lab/storage area/machine shop. However, multiple offices can be included on the same form. 1. The first eight sections have universal questions that apply to every area. For self-audits of office space, only section 1-8 have to be completed. I attach the Hazard Assessment Certification for FRNY offices for your information; please answer "yes" to questions 8.1 - 8.4 for offices. 2. Sections 9 to 29 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections (section 1 through 29). 3. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, not necessarily by the person completing the self-audit. 4. Electronic signatures are accepted on ISP self-audit forms. In addition to completing the self-audit for your labs/shop, please review and update the door posting, hazard assessment (should be placed inside the lab, near the entrance), chemical inventory (Form HCP4), and lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (at a minimum, the first page needs to be signed by the PI of the lab and dated within the last 6 months). They should be all accurate and dated within the last six months. N95 Mask Allotment Update

Dear All, I am happy to report that we have received our bulk order of N95 masks (CLICK HERE for description of mask<https://www.3m.com/3M/en_US/p/d/cbgnaw011148/>) for everyone's general use. In order to ensure our supplies last and everyone in our immediate CHE community can get an allotment, we are only handing out 2 masks at a time. I shall be sending out emails to all faculty and graduate students shortly. If you are interested in getting some of these masks, please be sure to contact either myself, Lauren Hays, or Jason Thorp in the main office. We will make them available to you and either leave them in your office (for those that have private offices) or you can arrange a pickup time with our Main Office (staff Cc'ed). Modified Research Space COVID-19 Processes

Hello everyone, I wanted to make you aware of a recent change in the procedure of handling research space (including offices) after confirmed positive cases of Covid-19 accessing these spaces. With the number of Covid-19 cases increasing on campus, it is possible that our School will also experience positive cases, thus is important to be aware of these changes. The Office of the Executive Vice President for Research and Partnerships sent last week the information below (see some important information highlighted in yellow) to all Point of Contacts listed on the Covid Research Space SOPs. In short, this means that disinfection of research space after a person accessing this space tested positive for Covid-19 is only needed if the person accessed the space in the last 24 hours before their positive test. For the past 1.5 years, we have been sending notifications to research space Points of Contact (POCs) when someone listed on their SOP tests positive for COVID-19. The intent of these notifications has been to request that the POC implement a thorough cleaning and disinfection of their space to curtail any potential surface transmission of COVID-19. This was due to the fact that Building Services typically does not clean labs and other research spaces on campus as they would classrooms. When this system was first implemented, CDC guidelines indicated that surface transmission was possible for up to seven days after contamination. The CDC has now shortened this window to 24 hours. In light of the timing of our notifications, it is no longer scientifically prudent to expend our stretched resources to send these communications. This change has been approved by the Protect Purdue Implementation Team. With the prevalence of Omicron, Purdue must devote their capacity to those efforts that are most effective in managing the spread of COVID-19. With that, we will be suspending our Research Space COVID-19 notifications to POCs. However, we will still monitor—daily—all COVID-positives associated with research spaces, tracking any trends or areas of concern, as the safety of our research enterprise is our highest concern. We greatly appreciate your work to keep your SOP updated with the most current personnel and ask that you continue this practice, as this is still our primary way to monitor how COVID-19 is impacting research operations. End of year reminders

Hello everyone, As we are getting ready for the winter recess and the University is closing operations from December 23 at 5 pm until 8 am on January 3, 2022, I wanted to send a few timely reminders: 1. If your lab is also closing operations for winter recess, please double check your work area before leaving for the break and leave instruments, experimental setups, reactors, etc. in sleep mode (or unplug them), turn off gases, etc. 2. Keep fume hoods with the sash lowered 3. Do not leave water running 4. Switch off lights, and make sure lab doors are locked before leaving. Each lab should have a "Shutdown SOP" that spells out the steps to follow for safely closing down the lab when this is not used for longer time; please use your own lab's Shutdown SOP as you prepare to close the lab for winter recess. If you are around during the winter recess doing research in the lab, please remember the following: 1. No one should work alone in the lab - always have someone around who can assist you in case of emergency. 2. Wear your PPE at all times (according to what was determined during your PPE training)! The minimum required PPE to work in the lab is: * Lab coat * Closed toe shoes * Long pants or equivalent * Safety glasses/safety goggles/splash goggles - depending on the work performed. Prescription glasses are NOT accepted as PPE. * Chemical resistant safety gloves if you work with hazardous chemicals * Face mask (during Covid-19 pandemic) 3.
