She holds a PhD from Purdue University and a bachelor's degree from IIT Bombay. She currently works on understanding the relationship between the brain anatomical structure and the diverse functions it can exhibit, as well as how this relationship is affected in neurological conditions such as Alzheimer's disease. More broadly, Parul is interested in understanding the underlying mechanisms of neural activity ranging from a single neuron to the entire brain using mathematical modeling. Parul's research is generously supported by the Alzheimer's Association postdoctoral fellowship. ******* ******* Towards Understanding Pain Sensation Thursday, April 14, 2022 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 PM- Abstract: Pain is a common sensation that arises due to injuries as well as various diseases and disorders. In this talk, we will examine the pathophysiology of pain by investigating the pain-sensing neuron dynamics using an engineering approach. Specifically, we will focus on exploring the following: (i) pain sensation mutations, and (ii) chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) mechanisms. Pain signaling can be characterized in terms of electrical signaling by a pain-sensing neuron. To investigate this electrical signaling, a mathematical modeling approach was employed in this work. The pain-sensing neuron membrane was assumed to be an electrical circuit and the potential across the membrane was modeled in terms of the interplay of sodium and potassium ions flowing across it via voltage-gated sodium and potassium channels, respectively. A bifurcation theory approach was used to explore possible bifurcations to explain the switch from a "no-pain" to a "painful" solution regime. Using this approach, we firstly detected potential mutation points in specific sodium channels that can alter the pain sensation threshold of an individual. This was supported by experimental evidence in existing literature. Secondly, we examined the role of voltage-gated ion channels in inducing CIPN. Bifurcation analysis revealed that alterations in specific sodium and potassium channel conductance can induce CIPN. These findings were supplemented by in vitro recordings of the electrical activity of a sensory neuron culture. ISP Recertification of our School

Hello Everyone, I am pleased to let you know that following the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) recertification meeting with REM representatives on March 11, 2022, followed by safety inspection of selected ChE labs and corrections of identified deficiencies, our School was ISP recertified for another year. The official recertification document was signed on March 31. "Thank you!" to all of you for your efforts in making this possible! Two main deficiencies identified during lab inspections were "open and unlabeled chemical containers" and "researchers not wearing their PPE in the lab". As a reminder, ALL chemical containers, including oil baths need to be labeled, and PPE needs to be worn at all times in the lab (lab coat and safety glasses). Please also remember that outside of the lab you can wear a lab coat ONLY in areas clearly identified as "One glove policy" areas. These do not include the stairwells and the catwalk between the new and old wing of the building. If you travel between these areas you will need to take your lab coat off and put it back on at your destination lab. Thank you for your sustained commitment to safety! Security of labs and offices in FRNY

Hello everyone, It was brought to my attention that during the OSHA inspection of our building many of the labs, and even graduate student offices were found unlocked and unoccupied. Security in our building is paramount. Many of our labs have extremely hazardous chemicals and/or expensive pieces of equipment, thus it is imperative that all labs are locked at all times when researchers are not present in the lab. A good practice to keep labs secure is to keep them locked at all times and use your key to enter whenever needed. At the same time, it is equally important to safeguard your personal belongings and lock your office whenever you leave, even for a short period of time. Please let me know if you have any questions.
