Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Paul Nealey Institute of Molecular Engr., University of Chicago "Directed Assembly of Block Copolymers on Lithographically Defined Chemically Nanopatterned Substrates" April 2, 2013 9:00-10:20 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The use of block copolymers in the lithographic process is an attractive strategy to augment and enhance the capabilities of current tools in nanomanufacturing. We employ electron beam and 193 nm immersion lithography to fabricate chemically patterned surfaces. Block copolymer films are deposited on the surfaces and annealed. By judicious choice of the chemistry and the geometry of the patterned regions, the domain structure of the block copolymer film may be directed to assembly into desirable architectures for applications such as bit patterned media or integrated circuits. Challenges that remain in materials and process development include delineation of the degree of perfection that can be obtained, and fabrication of sub 10 nm features in manufacturing-relevant processes. Here we report 1) the relationships between attributes of the chemical pattern and the degree of perfection of the assembled block copolymer films, 2) two approaches to processing films on chemical patterns to enable assembly of high resolution copolymers with differing block surface energies, and 3) design principles for the synthesis of new block copolymers for directed self-assembly with sub 10 nm features. Bio: Paul F. Nealey is currently the Brady W Dougan Family Professor in Molecular Engineer-ing at the new Institute for Molecular Engineering of the University of Chicago. His research interests include nanofabrication techniques based on advanced lithography and directed self-assembly, development of imaging materials for alternative lithographic strategies, and dimension dependent material properties of nanoscopic macromolecular structures. He is a fellow of the American Physical Society, and has received the National Science Foundation Career Award, the Camille Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award, the University of Wisconsin Romnes Fellowship, the Nanoscale Science and Engineering Forum Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Arthur K. Doolittle Award from the American Chemical Society. He was also the Founding Director of the National Science Foundation-funded Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center in Templated Synthesis and Assembly at the Nanoscale.

Mikeska Birck Rm. 2001 April 4, Thurs., 3:30 p.m. "Crystalline Silicon Solar Cell Metallization" Crystalline silicon solar cell technology has advanced by improvements to all aspects of cell design including metallization. Improvements to metal contacts have been synergistic with other cell improvements such as passivation, lightly doped emitters, and boron doped emitters. Recent improvements in metallization contacts have allowed the solar cell industry to move from highly doped emitters (HDE), designed to enable sufficiently low contact resistance, to lightly doped emitters (LDE), which have much lower recombination velocities, lower saturation current and improved cell efficiency. We will discuss both accepted theories and new insights into silver-silicon contact mechanisms, which combined have led to recent improvements in cell design and performance. Kurt R. Mikeska received his Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Rutgers University, College of Engineering and is currently a Senior Research Associate at DuPont in the Central Research and Development Department, Experimental Station, Wilmington DE. His expertise is in solid state inorganic synthesis, and he has worked in the area of crystalline silicon photovoltaics for the past ten years developing contact metallizations and investigating metal-semiconductor interface contact mechanisms. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Alan Lesser University of Massachusetts "Aspects of molecular mobility and topology on the mechanical performance of polymeric glasses" March 26, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The use of polymeric materials is widespread in virtually every application within our society today. They are now commonplace engineering materials of choice in many applications including, automotive, aerospace, housing, and medical applications. This is due in large part to the multitude of synthetic routes, molecular architectures, and processing strategies that enable an infinite range of materials with unique properties. In this lecture, we discuss aspects that relate molecular architecture and segmental mobility to engineering performance. We start by highlighting how basic alterations in molecular architecture affect key thermal and mechanical properties of glassy networks. We then discuss how these characteristics relate to nonlinear properties including the yield behavior, the post yield response, and fracture behavior. We illustrate how these properties change during the formation of the glass and how they are altered by process or cure conditions. We then present results that probe segmental mobility during active nonlinear deformation in a model glass. We distinguish between flow in a polymer melt to that of vitreous flow observed in polymer glass subjected to large inelastic deformation. Bio: Dr. Alan Lesser is currently a Full Professor in the Polymer Science and Engineering Department at the University of Massachusetts. His research activities include structure-property relationships in polymers and polymer based composites, nonlinear and fracture behavior of polymer based materials, and processing polymers in supercritical carbon dioxide. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of Polymer Engineering and Science Journal and Polymer Composites Journal. He also resides on the Advisory Board for the Journal of Applied Polymer Science. He is a Fellow of the Society of Plastics Engineers, has served as the Conference Chair for the Gordon Composites Conference, and has served as Chair of the Polymer Analysis Division, and Failure Analysis and Prevention SIG, for the Society of Plastics Engineers. He has published more than 100 papers in refereed journals and more than 130 in conference proceedings. Dr. Lesser received his PhD in Civil Engineering from Case Western Reserve University in 1988 and joined the faculty in the PSE Department in 1995 after spending 6 years in industry working as a Research Scientist for Shell Development Company.

Tornado Drill - Exercise in Forney on Wed, March 27

Dear Faculty, Staff, Research Fellows, Graduate and Undergraduate Students, On Wednesday, March 27, as part of Indiana's Severe Weather Preparedness Week, the Emergency Preparedness and Planning Department will be coordinating a campus-wide tornado drill. The ChE Safety Committee agreed that this is an excellent opportunity to test our building's 'shelter-in-place' procedures and the response of the building's occupants to simulated severe weather emergency situations. Therefore, it was decided that our School (Forney Biulding) will take part in this voluntary activity. The exercise is scheduled for March 27, when multiple warning systems will be activated at 10 am. The exercise will last until approximately 10:30 am. The systems that will be activated include the All Hazard Sirens, intended to warn those outdoors only, and the text messaging layer of the Purdue Alert notification system. The schedule for this exercise is: 1. At approximately 10:00 AM, the National Weather Service sends a simulated tornado warning to emergency management directors throughout the state. 2. At approximately 10:05 AM, Tippecanoe County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director activates the county outdoor all-hazards siren system. 3. At approximately 10:08 AM, Purdue Dispatch Center sends out a Purdue ALERT text message simulating the tornado warning. 4. Departments that are participating in the drill will immediately implement their shelter in place procedures. 5. At approximately 10:25 AM, Purdue Dispatch Center sends out a Purdue ALERT text message simulating “all clear” for the tornado warning. 6. Building Deputies conduct a short Hot Wash; gather lessons learned. 7. At approximately 10:30 AM, the exercise ends. Please revise the standard safety procedure in case of a severe weather emergency situation for Forney building; this is detailed below: - when the 'all hazards' sirens are activated (or you receive the Purdue ALERT text message), stay in the building and follow the signs towards the shelter-in-place location. This is the basement, in the new wing of the building. - To reach the shelter area, use one of the three staircases: in the FRNY atrium, adjacent to the exit that faces Physics, or adjacent to the exit facing Civil Engineering. - Do not use the elevators. - Take your personal belongings if possible, and stay calm. - Assist those who need help, if possible. - Stay in the shelter location until instructed by emergency personnel that it is safe to leave. This is a voluntary activity for the school, but for the exercise to be a success I urge everyone to take part in it. Students who have classes at the time of the exercise should follow their instructor's decision on the matter and their instructions. Please be aware that people from outside the building may come in to shelter in our building when the 'all hazard' sirens are activated; please guide them to the shelter location, if necessary. I would like to remind you that the activated outdoor all-hazards sirens (shelter-in-place) on campus mean 'dangerous circumstances are occurring outside', not only tornado warnings. These conditions could include hazardous chemicals, an active criminal incident, or severe weather. Thank you for your support and cooperation in this matter. Cleaning Schedule for Your Office

Good afternoon, In the Work Environment Satisfaction Survey from fall I saw many comments about labs and offices, particularly graduate offices, not being cleaned properly or regularly. I contacted building services and they shared the timing of their detailed cleaning for each floor, please see attached. Each office, including graduate offices, are supposed to be swept (and mopped if needed) weekly. The attached maps highlight when a certain area is scheduled to be cleaned/swept on a regular basis. Please check your office the day after your scheduled cleaning and let me know if you still see problems. This will serve as a tool to identify if there are issues on a specific floor or in the entire building in general. Hopefully, you will notice an improvement in the quality of your office. Labs are included in the document too, but the regular cleaning will not be done if you indicated there is sensitive equipment in your lab. Jeff Valley has a professional large capacity vacuum cleaner that can be checked out if you'd rather do your own cleaning in laboratories. You can email me concerns about cleaning or building maintenance at any time.
