Recent safety incidents in FRNY

Hello Everyone, I would like to share with you the safety incidents/near misses that occurred in FRNY and were reported during March-April 2015. 1. March 6, 2015: while a graduate student researcher was subculturing cells, the glass pipette used broke and the glass cut the index finger of her right hand. No professional medical attention was needed in this case, the researcher stopped the bleeding and applied a band-aid to the laceration. Recommendations: it is recommended that before using any glass-made equipment, this should be carefully inspected for integrity; broken or cracked glass equipment should not be used in the lab. 2. April 4, 2015: After an instrument was used in one of the research labs (researchers from multiple research groups use this instrument), the thermoelectric controller was left on, while the cooling system serving the controller was switched off. One researcher, unaware of this situation, received minor first degree burns to his hand after accidentally touching the overheated controller. No professional medical attention was needed in this case. Actions taken: A large sign was placed on the water valve reiterating that users need to turn off the thermoelectric controller before turning off the cooling water. After inspecting the system, it was also recommended that a flow control system be installed on this instrument. This will automatically switch off the heating, should the cooling water flow stop unexpectedly. This will prevent overheating of the system, possible damage to the instrument and safety incidents, like the one described here, from happening. 3. April 6, 2015: Due to poor construction of an in-hose made electrical instrument, the researchers using it noticed that the aparatus was overheated. A closer examination after disconnecting it form the mains revealed that the wires inside the electrical controller were loose and potentially caused a short circuit to the instrument. Actions taken: the aparatus was temporarily decomissioned and inspected by our Director of Instrumentation, Dr. Yury Zvinevich, and by REM presonnel. After proving unsafe for use in our labs, the inspection team made the following recommendations: (i) the researchers working with elecrtical items should have current electrical training (this was already delivered to the group by REM personell) and (ii) the aparatus be equipped with safety fearures such as grounding and fuses (or other kind of circuit breaker). At the same time, all in-house made electrical devices will need to be equipped with these safety features and inspected internally and by Dr. Yury Zvinevich before being used in our labs. The ChE Safety Committee recommends that electrical devices used in our research labs be professionally designed and constructed to incorporate necessary safety feactures. If you choose to build your own instrument/device, this needs to be safety inspected by Dr. Zvinevich before being used in our labs. Dr. Zvinevich will make recommendations on what needs to be incorporated to ensure the aparatus is safe to use. Should you identify that elecrtical training is needed for the work in your work area, please let me know and we can make arrangements with REM to provide this training for you and your group, as necessary. Following REM's recommendation and to comply with Purdue and OSHA safety training requirements, the ChE Safety Committee developed an on-line safety training refresher. This yearly refresher training is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students and post-doctoral research associates and should be completed within 30 days of its announcement (you will receive an email every year with instructions on how to complete the on-line training and the due date). This year, everyone should complete the on-line safety training refresher by the end of Sunday, May 17, 2015. You can access the training material on any device linked to the internet; however, you will need a computer/laptop to take the quiz at the end and complete the training (the link to the quiz is not active from a mobile device such as an iPad or other tablets). Instructions: 1. Access the ChE safety website https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html and click on the Annual Safety Training Refresher<https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h…> link under the Training heading. Log-in with your Purdue credentials and click on the link that best describes your status in our School to access the training material relevant to you. 3. Read and understand the training material and follow the active links in the document (where applicable) for more information on specific topics. 5. Follow the "Take the quiz" link at the end of the document and take the short quiz to complete this part of the training. Once you complete the quiz, you will receive an email confirming that you completed the training. Print that email (or save it) and keep it for your own records. 6. Start of self-audits of ChE labs and offices

Hello Everyone, It is now time to complete the annual safety review of all ChE laboratories AND offices. These reviews are part of our Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) and are required to obtain our annual recertification with the University. The timeline for 2015 is: - May - self-audits of laboratories and offices - June - Safety Committee inspections of all ChE laboratories and offices - May - July - address deficiencies identified in self-audits and inspections - August - Recertification Review with REM 1. Self-Audits The ISP Self-Audit checklist can be found on the ChE School's website, under the "Laboratory Safety Requirements" heading: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html , or REM's website: http://www.purdue.edu/rem/home/forms/ispcheck.pdf. Please also find attached a copy of the self-audit form. The first seven sections have universal questions that apply to every area. Sections 8 to 24 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, not necessarily by the person completing the self-audit. Please return completed (and signed by PI/supervisor) self-audits to Gabriela Nagy in FRNY G051 by 5 pm on Friday, May 29, 2015. In addition to the self-audit, please review and update the door posting, hazard assessment, chemical inventory (Form HCP4) and employee exposure list (Form HCP5) and lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan for your work area. They should be accurate and dated within the last six months. 2. Inspections During June, 2015, the ChE Safety Committee will perform unannounced safety inspections of all ChE laboratories and offices. 3. Deficiencies Deficiencies identified in your self-audit and in the ChE Safety Committee inspections will need to be addressed. The ChE Safety Committee (list posted on https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html) is available to help you. 4. Recertification Review The review includes unscheduled visits to our laboratories and offices by REM. I will notify you of the review date, once I have that information. Peppas Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering University of Texas at Austin "Multiresponsive Nanogels for the Delivery of Small Interfering RNA and Advanced Protein Therapeutic Agents" Tuesday, April 28, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract. Engineering the molecular design of intelligent biomaterials by controlling structure, recognition and specificity is the first step in coordinating and duplicating complex biological and physiological processes. Recent developments in siRNA and protein delivery have been directed towards the preparation of targeted formulations for protein delivery to specific sites, use of environmentally-responsive polymers to achieve pH- or temperature-triggered delivery, usually in modulated mode, and improvement of the behavior of their mucoadhesive behavior and cell recognition. We address design and synthesis characteristics of novel crosslinked networks capable of protein release as well as artificial molecular structures capable of specific molecular recognition of biological molecules. We have been successful in synthesizing novel protein-binding molecules based on non-covalent directed interactions. We have also developed structurally superior materials to serve as effective carriers for siRNA delivery to combat Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. "Intelligent Polymer Hydrogels: From Obscure Molecular Structures to Useful Multifunctional Systems" Wednesday, April 29, 2015 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. FRNY 3059 Abstract. Cross-linked polymeric networks with diverse characteristics and properties have been in the center of polymer physics research over the past 40 years. We examine how the field started in the early 1930s and how chemical engineers and chemists set the fundamentals of molecular structures and theories for the Gaussian and non-Gaussian behavior of these networks. We address the highly non-ideal thermodynamic behavior of such systems and present the latest theories of solute diffusion through them. We address the so-called "intelligence" of such networks in physiological and other solutions. We conclude with directions for future research in this field. Bio. Nicholas A. Peppas is the Cockrell Family Regents Chaired Professor in the Departments of Chemical, Biomedical Engineering and Pharmacy, Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Institute of Biomaterials, Drug Delivery and Regenerative Medicine of the University of Texas at Austin. His work in biomaterials, polymer physics, drug delivery and bionanotechnology follows a multidisciplinary approach by blending modern molecular and cellular biology with engineering principles to design the next-generation of medical systems and devices for patient treatment. Over the past 40 years he has set the fundamentals and rational design of drug delivery systems and developed models of drug and protein diffusion in controlled release devices and biological tissues. A significant portion of this work was performed at Purdue University (1976-2002) where Peppas was Professor of Chemical Engineering as well as the Showalter Distinguished Professor Biomedical Engineering. In 2012 he received the Founders Award of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the highest recognition of the Academy, for these contributions to the field. Peppas is a member of the NAE, Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, National Academy of Inventors, the National Academy of France, the Royal Academy of Spain, the Academy of Athens and the Academy of Texas. He has been recognized with awards from AIChE (Founders Award, William Walker Award, Institute Lecture, Jay Bailey Award, Bioengineering Award, Materials Award), the Biomedical Engineering Society (Distinguished Scientist Award), the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (Galletti Award), the Society for Biomaterials (Founders, Clemson and Hall Awards), the Controlled Release Society (Founders, Heller and Eurand Awards) and other societies.
