The boundaries between science and engineering, biology and material science, basic and translational research are often blurry, and how does one transition from the ordinary to something that is more extraordinary. One path is to look at the interfaces of fields and training, and this happens to be a path that I pursued. This talk will touch on topics such as when to take risks, how to build a network of support, and how to insure the future success of the chemical engineering field by engaging in research that is valued across disciplines. Bio: Kristi S. Anseth earned her B.S. degree from Purdue University in 1992 and her Ph.D. degree from the University of Colorado in 1994. After post-doctoral research at MIT, she joined the Department of Chemical and Biological Engineering at the University of Colorado at Boulder as an Assistant Professor in 1996. Dr. Anseth is presently a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Investigator and Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering. Her research interests lie at the interface between biology and engineering where she designs new biomaterials for applications in drug delivery and regenerative medicine. Dr. Anseth is an elected member of the National Academy of Engineering (2009), the Institute of Medicine (2009), and the National Academy of Sciences (2013). She is a proud Purdue alumna, was honored to receive a Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award (2012), and presently serves on the College of Engineering's Advisory Council. ***** ***** ***** ***** ***** "Cellular Control in a Couple of Clicks" Wednesday, April 20, 2016 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. FRNY G140 Abstract: Methods for culturing mammalian cells in a biologically relevant context are increasingly needed to study cell and tissue physiology, expand and differentiate progenitor cells, and to grow replacement tissues for regenerative medicine. Two-dimensional culture has been the paradigm for in vitro cell culture; however, evidence and intuition suggest that cells behave differently when they are isolated from the complex architecture of their native tissues and constrained to petri dishes or material surfaces with unnaturally high stiffness, polarity, and surface to volume ratio. As a result, biologists are often faced with the need for a more physiologically relevant 3D culture environment, and many researchers are realizing the advantages of hydrogels as a means of creating custom 3D microenvironments with highly controlled chemical, biological and physical cues. Further, the native ECM is far from static, so ECM mimics must also be dynamic to direct complex cellular behavior. In general, there is an un-met need for materials that allow user-defined control over the spatio-temporal presentation of important signals, such as integrin-binding ligands, growth factor release, and biomechanical signals. Developing such hydrogel mimics of the ECM for 3D cell culture is an archetypal engineering problem, requiring control of numerous properties on multiple time and length scales important for cellular functions. New materials systems have the potential to significantly improve our understanding of how cells receive information from their microenvironment and the role that these dynamic processes may play in controlling the stem cell niche to cancer metastasis. This talk will illustrate our recent efforts to advance hydrogel chemistries for 3D cell culture and dynamically control biochemical and biophysical properties through orthogonal, photochemical click reaction mechanisms.

Lenhoff Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering University of Delaware "Proteins in Ion-Exchange Adsorbents: The Inside Story" Tuesday, April 12, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Despite its inherent inefficiencies, chromatography remains the workhorse for protein purification in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology industries, with ion exchange the most widely used mode. Many aspects of a chromatographic process are still optimized empirically, but there is an increasing recognition that a mechanistic understanding of the relation between adsorbent and protein structure and separation performance can be valuable in process design and optimization. This presentation will cover efforts to obtain such insights into the behavior of proteins inside chromatographic adsorbents. Approaches to be discussed include powerful experimental tools such as confocal microscopy and neutron and x-ray scattering, but there is also a critical role for fundamental principles of classical chemical engineering, albeit specialized for the peculiar physicochemical properties of protein solutions. Bio: Abraham Lenhoff is the Allan P. Colburn Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Delaware, where he has been on the faculty since 1984. He earned a Bachelor's degree from the University of Cape Town and Master's and Ph.D. degrees from the University of Wisconsin, all in chemical engineering. His research is primarily on application of principles of thermodynamics, transport phenomena, biophysics and colloid science to protein separations and phase behavior, especially chromatography and crystallization. This talk will focus on introducing our ongoing efforts in first principles modeling of energy storage and conversion materials. In particular, I will present recent progress in our collaborative theoretical and experimental efforts to explore photocatalytic materials, especially the photocatalytic properties of bismuth vanadate that has received much interest as a promising visible-light-active photocatalyst for water splitting. The effects of doping and structural phase transitions as well as the underlying mechanisms of photocatalytic water splitting will be discussed. Bio: Gyeong S. Hwang is the Paul D. and Betty Robertson Meek & American Petrofina Foundation Centennial Professor of Chemical Engineering at The University of Texas at Austin. He received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (with M.S. in Applied Physics) from California Institute of Technology in 1999. Prior to joining the faculty of UT-Austin in Fall 2001, he was the F.M. Becket Fellow of the Electrochemical Society at the Max Planck Institute, Stuttgart, in Germany, and a research staff at the Materials Process and Simulation Center of California Institute of Technology. His current research has a well-balanced emphasis on fundamentals and applications, ranging from first principles studies of surface chemistry, bulk dynamics and interfacial interactions to multiscale, multiphysics modeling of engineering problems encountered in the fabrication of energy, electronic devices. He has published about 165 peer-reviewed journal articles, and has been granted 4 US patents. He has received several awards and fellowships including: Lyondell Endowed Faculty Fellowship in Engineering (2007, UT-Austin); Faculty Early Career Development (CAREER) Award (2005, NSF); and F.M. Becket Memorial Award (1999, ECS).

These nanoparticles, which primarily consist of conjugated polymers and are called polymer dots (Pdots) when they exhibit small particle size and high brightness, have demonstrated utility in a wide range of applications such as fluorescence imaging and biosensing. In this presentation, I will highlight work in my lab in the development of Pdots for biological detection, imaging, and sensing. Bio: Daniel T. Chiu is currently the A. Bruce Montgomery Professor Chemistry, Endowed Professor of Analytical Chemistry, and Professor of Bioengineering at the University of Washington. He is also a member of the University of Washington's Institute for Molecular Engineering as well as the Cancer Consortium of the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center. Dr. Chiu obtained a B.A. in neurobiology and a B.S. in chemistry at the University of California, Berkeley in 1993, and a Ph.D. in chemistry from Stanford University in 1998. He completed postdoctoral research at Harvard University before joining the University of Washington in 2000. Karen worked at Purdue for nearly 40 years, of which more than 26 were in our School. She had some health issues for several years before retiring in May 2014 but she was always cheerful, with a smile on her face. Her hobby was bowling - along with her husband Rich, she was an avid bowler and participated in the Purdue Faculty , Staff & Students Bowling League for years. Recently, on March 19, she was inducted into the Lafayette USBC (US Bowling Congress) Hall of Fame for Meritorious Service. Details about her visitation and services will be available later. Our thoughts are with Rich and her family - may Karen rest in peace. Arvind
