Hello Everyone, This is a reminder that the due date to complete the on-line annual safety training refresher is this Sunday, May 1st. The annual safety training is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visiting researchers/scholars. Undergraduate students do not have to do the refresher at this time. Please follow the instructions in the email below and complete the refresher training. Thank you for your commitment to safety! It is now time to complete the on-line annual safety training refresher, which is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visiting researchers/scholars. Undergraduate students do not have to do the refresher at this time. You can access the training material and take the quiz on any device linked to the internet, including mobile devices. Please follow the instructions below and complete this safety training refresher by the end of Sunday, May 1, 2016. Instructions: 1. Access the ChE safety website https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety and click on the Annual Safety Training Refresher<https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h…> link under the Training heading. Alternatively, you can follow this link: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h… to access the dedicated safety refresher web page. 2. Log-in with your Purdue credentials and click on the link that best describes your status in our School to access the training material relevant to you. 3. You can choose to download the training material on your computer or open it directly in your browser (in this case you might not be able to access to the training material during the quiz). 4. Read and understand the training material and follow the active links in the document (where applicable) for more information on specific topics. 5. Follow the "Take the quiz" link at the end of the document and take the short quiz to complete this part of the training. Once you complete the quiz, you will receive an email confirming that you completed the training (or part of the training, depending on your status in the School). Save this email and keep it for your own records. 6. If applicable, read the updated lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) developed for the lab you work in (or, as PI, are responsible for) and complete the certification page (page 86 in the CHP template posted on REM's website: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/home/booklets/chp2014.pdf) 7. Turn in the signed CHP certification page to Gabriela Nagy (FRNY G041D) within 10 days of completing the quiz. Dr. Jan-Anders Manson - Acceptance!

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to inform that Dr. Jan-Anders Manson has accepted our offer to join this Fall as Distinguished Professor in the Schools of Materials Engineering (MSE) and Chemical Engineering (ChE), 50% each, with the tenure home in MSE. I thank all who were involved in his recruiting, and take this opportunity to especially thank Byron Pipes for alerting us to his availability, for his immense efforts in arranging Jan-Anders' visits to Purdue, and for making it all happen. As a member of the composites manufacturing pre-eminent team search committee, Jim Caruthers also played an important role. The relationships we have established with MSE over the years will grow stronger as a result of Jan-Anders' joining. Power outage earlier today

Hello Everyone, There was a short power outage (around 2:45 pm today) and although the power generator started to work straight away, the fume hoods and elevators were not functioning. Everything is back to normal as of now. However, if you plan to work in the lab, please make sure that the fume hoods are operating normally. There is still a faint smell of chemicals on the corridors of the 3rd floor (and on other floors) but that will clear off soon, as the ventilation in the building is back to normal. Please read below- From: Valley, Jeffrey L Sent: Friday, April 22, 2016 3:45 PM To: 'cheq(a)ecn.purdue.edu'; 'chmegrad(a)ecn.purdue.edu' Cc: Warwick, James D Subject: Loss of power All - Approximately 1 hour ago we had a power surge and the main electrical panel kicked out and we lost power inside the building. The emergency generator did turn on and maintained power in certain areas of the building. Power has been restored in the building but at the moment the main manifold exhaust system for the fume hoods in the addition side is still not working and they are looking into it. BE ADVISED - I have been told there is a strong odor on the 3rd floor of addition and told that area should be avoided for now until the air recirculates and fresh air is supplied back in. Within the hour it should to normal . Thanks. Jeff

Safety update on transportation of liquid nitrogen tanks in FRNY building

Hello everyone, The ChE Safety Committee updated the "Cylinder Handling Procedures" document, to include recommendations on safe handling and transportation of liquid nitrogen (LN2) tanks with the elevators in FRNY building. The updated document is posted on the ChE safety website https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety , under "Safety Updates", as update #21. [cid:image005.png@01D18BF9.27135130]<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE> Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Kelly Lecture Dr. Kristi Anseth Department of Chemical & Biological Engineering University of Colorado, Boulder "Cellular Control in a Couple of Clicks" Wednesday, April 20, 2016 11:30 a.m. - 12:20 p.m. FRNY G140 Abstract: Methods for culturing mammalian cells in a biologically relevant context are increasingly needed to study cell and tissue physiology, expand and differentiate progenitor cells, and to grow replacement tissues for regenerative medicine. Two-dimensional culture has been the paradigm for in vitro cell culture; however, evidence and intuition suggest that cells behave differently when they are isolated from the complex architecture of their native tissues and constrained to petri dishes or material surfaces with unnaturally high stiffness, polarity, and surface to volume ratio. As a result, biologists are often faced with the need for a more physiologically relevant 3D culture environment, and many researchers are realizing the advantages of hydrogels as a means of creating custom 3D microenvironments with highly controlled chemical, biological and physical cues. Further, the native ECM is far from static, so ECM mimics must also be dynamic to direct complex cellular behavior. In general, there is an un-met need for materials that allow user-defined control over the spatio-temporal presentation of important signals, such as integrin-binding ligands, growth factor release, and biomechanical signals. Developing such hydrogel mimics of the ECM for 3D cell culture is an archetypal engineering problem, requiring control of numerous properties on multiple time and length scales important for cellular functions. New materials systems have the potential to significantly improve our understanding of how cells receive information from their microenvironment and the role that these dynamic processes may play in controlling the stem cell niche to cancer metastasis. This talk will illustrate our recent efforts to advance hydrogel chemistries for 3D cell culture and dynamically control biochemical and biophysical properties through orthogonal, photochemical click reaction mechanisms.
