Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Pulickel Ajayan Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Rice University "Engineering of Nanostructures - Challenges and Opportunities" Thursday, October 31, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The talk will discuss our recent efforts in engineering nanostructured materials from building blocks that range in size, dimensionality and properties. The idea of engineering nanostructures to build functional materials captures the essence of nanotechnology and the challenges and opportunities in this area will be discussed. One dimensional nanostructures such as carbon nanotubes and the emerging two-dimensional atomic layers as novel building blocks will be considered. The creation of three-dimensional architectures from nanoscale building blocks will lead to new opportunities and the challenges involved in this approach will be highlighted. The talk will focus on engineered nanomaterials as a platform for several applications that include nanocomposites, energy storage, low dimensional devices etc. Bio: Dr. Pulickel Ajayan received his Ph.D. from Northwestern University. Dr. Ajayan's current position is Benjamin M. and Mary Greenwood Anderson Professor of Engineering at Rice University. He has recently received the Distinguished Alumni Award, Department of Materials Science and Engineering at Northwestern University. He was elected to the National Academy of Science India, Foreign Fellow in 2011 and elected Fellow of AAAS in 2007. Dr. Ajayan has nearly 20 years of record in the development of nanomaterials for various applications. He has been a pioneer in the research and development of carbon nanotubes and has contributed to this field greatly. He is an experimentalist and has also contributed to research areas of graphene, 2D layered materials, nanocomposites, electrical interconnects, nanostructured materials in energy storage and conversion and energetic materials. He has a strong record in materials characterization, microscopy and spectroscopy.

ABET visit

Dear Colleagues, As you are aware, we have our ABET visit going on currently - started yesterday and ends tomorrow. Dr. Ron Danner, a well-known thermodynamics emeritus faculty member from Penn State is our Program Evaluator - he is a distinguished teacher-scholar from a large State university like ours. He selected several faculty members to meet with individually and these visits are going on in FRNY 3059 - he reviewed the course materials and toured the facilities yesterday. I meet with Dr. Danner at 4 pm today and his last meeting is the exit meeting jointly with Dave Corti and I at 11:30 am tomorrow, when he'll give us the preliminary conclusions from his evaluation. I take this opportunity to thank Dave Corti for leading our ABET process and the entire School's faculty and staff members for their many contributions towards this visit. Arvind Arvind Varma R. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate Seminar Series Prof. Doraiswami Ramkrishna Harry Creighton Peffer Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering, Purdue University and Recipient of the 2013 Sigma Xi Research Award "Metabolic Complexity. Is there Music Behind it?" October 22, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The complexity of metabolic networks would appear to fit in more appropriately with a cacophonic scenario than anything remotely musical. However, this talk will attempt to show that a mathematical view can be had of this complex process in which the phenomenon of metabolic regulation can be likened to the conductor of a symphonic orchestra summoning combinations of instruments representing metabolic reactions towards superlative music. It will be the objective of this seminar to let this analogy lead the discussion of a cybernetic theory of cellular metabolism which interprets the diversity of gene expression as a targeted effort to maximize the organism's survival. Bio: Professor Ramkrishna received his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Bombay in 1960, and his Ph.D. from University of Minnesota in 1965. He is a Member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, Foreign Fellow of The Indian National Academy of Engineering, and Fellow of The American Institute of Chemical Engineers, Fellow of The American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. He is a World leader in the application of mathematics to chemical engineering. His major research contributions have been in the development of novel mathematical frameworks to solve basic chemical engineering problems displaying deterministic and stochastic behaviors. His work is very multidisciplinary working with investigators from around the world. .

Hello ChE Grad Students, The next Conversation with Dr. Varma is happening next Wednesday, October 23rd, from 12 to 1 in FRNY 3059. There will be lunch provided (FREE LUNCH!), and I hope that many of you will attend. This is an opportunity to meet with Dr. Varma in an informal setting and talk about any issues or questions you may have about our Graduate Program. I will be there too, and I'd like to invite you to send over questions for Dr. Varma in advance, if you'd like. I can then forward the questions to Dr. Varma, and he can think about them in advance of the meeting. Or you're also welcome to just bring your questions with you. And even if you don't have any questions, you're welcome to just stop by for informal conversation and FREE LUNCH!! Please come join us. We don't have many opportunities to gather as a group, and this is a good one (and the department is treating you to free lunch!!). Dear Colleagues, Attached is the 2012-13 Professional Activity Report for our School. The message below is for ChE School Heads in the US and a "Top-100" ChE list that I maintain, who received the report on Monday. This is the eighth year in a row that we have sent such report to this group. It is clear that we have an exciting program with major advances being made to solve important problems facing society. The 2013-14 report will become even more impressive as 3 new faculty members who join this year (Gounder, Laird and Pol), and Sang Kim who has returned after a leave, are included next year. The improvement will continue in the future as we add more colleagues as a part of the CoE Strategic Growth.
