Outlook Issues

As many/most of you that use Outlook have noticed, there is an issue that's been going on for at least the last 15-20 minutes where you may be losing your connection to Outlook and keep getting asked for your credentials (I also just had some old appointment reminders pop up). What I know at the moment is that ITAP is aware of the issue and are working to resolve it. As a short term fix those that normally use Outlook and have "exchange" accounts (most but not all Outlook users), you can use the Web interface to see most of your email and calendar. Student Recognition * Graduate Student Kathryn Smith received the Fran Allen PhD Fellowship award from IBM for her "outstanding technical accomplishments and commitment to mentoring and community-building. * Graduate Student Aniruddha Kelkar will be serving on the Purdue Community Standards Board (CSB) starting this semester, which adjudicates student conduct cases. More details are available on their website http://www.purdue.edu/odos/osrr/csb.php. * Senior Candace Corso is the President for the Professional Practice Ambassadors student organization, which is comprised of students from multiple disciplines at Purdue, including all engineering schools. Bake Sale -- For A Great Cause - United Way

Dear All, A friendly reminder. For those who have not responded. On Friday, October 19, I will be hosting a ChE Bake Sale in the Atrium from 9:00 AM - 12:00 Noon. The College of Engineering is having each department do a bake sale. We are in competition to see which School can sell the most. For this Adventure, I need more volunteers to bake something for the sale. Please let me know at your earliest convenience if you will bring something in for the sale. If you need baggies for your items, please let me know & I will bring some in Monday, October 15. United Way

Dear All, A friendly reminder to those who have not turned in their United Way card. Please return it whether you donate or not. Please put you name at the bottom of the envelop. Please return them to me at your earliest convenience. At the end of the campaign (November 9), for those who turn in the envelop, I will put their name in a drawing and the winners will receive a United Way T-Shirt. United Way is a wonderful foundation, which helps developing solutions for poverty, tackling homelessness and supporting groundbreaking reading programs in local schools .... United Way of Greater Lafayette is right there, helping build extraordinary futures for many, and we need your support. For the past 23 years, Purdue's United Way campaign has helped our community connect, educate, and involve students, faculty, staff and retirees in the care and nurturing of our local community. United Way of Greater Lafayette's goal this year is $4.7 million. Purdue needs to raise $745,000 of this amount. Please make a donation again this year or give for the first time to assure the important work of United Way of Greater Lafayette will continue. To ChE faculty and staff: I am pleased to announce that Karissa Raderstorf will be joining our School on Monday Oct. 15 as the new Program Administrator for our undergraduate program. Karissa already has many years of experience as a Senior Academic Advisor in the Krannert School of Management (where she started in 2006), and prior to that she was a student employment advisor at Robert Morris College. Karissa holds a Bachelor of Arts from Purdue. She is ready for the challenge of dealing with nearly 500 chemical engineering undergraduates. So, please join me in welcoming Karissa to our School. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering SEMINAR Dr. Eray S. Aydil Dept. of Chemical Engineering & Materials Science University of Minnesota “CIGS and CZTS Solar Cells” Tuesday, October 16, 2012 9:00-10:30 a.m. FRNY G140 Abstract: The current photovoltaic (PV) market is dominated by first generation silicon (Si) solar cells but this technology requires thick (>150 m) high electronic quality Si substrates which increases the cost of solar-to-electric energy conversion. Use of solar cells made from thin (~1-3 mm) direct band gap semiconductor films is growing rapidly because they are typically a factor of 100 thinner than crystalline Si devices and cost less. Amongst the second-generation thin film solar cells, those based on the copper indium gallium selenide (CuIn1-xGaxSe2 or CIGS) absorber have the distinction of having the highest overall power conversion efficiencies (20.3%). Many companies have already brought CIGS to market. Arguably, the production of these thin film solar cells will be limited by the scarcity of Te and In. Thus, an important problem in developing the next generation thin film solar cells is the synthesis and processing of strongly light absorbing semiconductors that are made of nontoxic and abundant elements. Copper-zinc-tin-sulfide (Cu2ZnSnS4, CZTS), is gaining attention as a potential light absorber in next generation thin film solar cells because it is composed of abundant and nontoxic elements and have attributes similar to CIGS. In this seminar, I will summarize our group’s research in CIGS and CZTS thin film solar cells. Bio: Professor Eray S. Aydil received a B.S. degree in chemical engineering and a B.S. degree in materials science from U. C. Berkeley, both in 1986. He received his Ph.D. degree in chemical engineering in 1991 from the University of Houston. He was a postdoc at Bell Labs until 1993 when he joined the faculty of the chemical engineering department at U.C. Santa Barbara as an assistant professor. By the time he left, in 2005, to come to Minnesota he was a full professor and vice chairman. In 2005, Professor Aydil joined the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota where he now holds the Ronald L. and Janet A. Christenson Chair in Renewable Energy. He has published over 160 articles and holds 7 patents. In recognition of his research, he has received the Peter Mark Award and the Plasma Prize from the American Vacuum Society, the Norman Hackerman Young Author Award of the Electrochemical Society, the National Young Investigator Award of the National Science Foundation, and the Camille-Dreyfus Teacher-Scholar Award. He is a Fellow of the American Vacuum Society and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Vacuum Science and Technology.

Dear Colleagues, We had two successful events, back to back, last week: OChE on Thursday and the IAC meeting on Friday. From all accounts, our guests enjoyed them very much. In fact, on Friday, the IAC members overwhelmingly endorsed the idea that we continue to have a common dinner for the two events on Thursday in the future. Such events require much thoughtful preparation and execution. I am writing to thank you for your help and participation in these events, which reflected well on our School.
