My health status - February 14, 2018

Dear Colleagues, Some of you are aware that I was admitted to the hospital on January 25 - it started as a stomach flu and turned into Ileus (Google for details), side effect of my current chemotherapy. So, the chemo was stopped, and is due to resume soon (tomorrow or coming Monday). I must admit that Ileus is a difficult experience but, with support of family and friends, and superb hospital staff, I was able to overcome it - was discharged from the hospital on Feb 12, stay of 15 days, longest of my life! The serious side effects and their management has convinced me to complete my full current chemo regimen in Scottsdale, not partly in Lafayette. I will miss the Naples PC and IAC visit this year - first in 15 years! I'll particularly miss visiting with the Ambassadors and the IAC members, both so important for our School. Hello Everyone, As we progress into the spring semester I wanted to let everyone know about the outreach activities GSO is planning for this spring. If you are interested in any of the below events please feel free to contact me directly or simply add your name to the spreadsheets attached. Education: Murdock After School Science Club-As we have done for many years the GSO coordinates an after school science club<http://purdueche.freeflowdp.com/purdueche/9187716147128722/MobilePagedRepli…> at Murdock Elementary School on Monday afternoons 3-4 times a month. If you would like to get the opportunity to do hands on experiments with 3rd graders in topics such as DNA, magnets, and chemical reactions please add your name to the spreadsheet <https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/14NmhKGIhzHnKoysTGrb2bpGheMfxvB_j5tg…> or contact me with any questions. Solar Rollers Day-This spring we will host a day for junior high students to come learn about solar energy by building and racing solar powered model cars. All day on Friday April 13th GSO will host close to 60 students from a local junior high school for the event, so many volunteers are needed! We will provide breakfast lunch and t-shirts to all volunteers. Please contact myself for more information or look out for additional emails in February for sign up! Environment: Highway Clean Up- The GSO has sponsored a section of highway 231 to clean of trash 2-3 times annual. We will be hosting the first cleaning of 2018 this spring with breakfast provided to all volunteers. This year we will plant young trees at new softball fields in Lafayette on Saturday April 28th and coffee will be provided to all volunteers. My health status - January 25, 2018

Dear Colleagues, Following surgery to remove the tumors off my lung on December 6 and recovery, my chemo treatment started on December 20. Each cycle is 4 weeks long, with 2 treatments/cycle - and each of these has 2 parts. The first is ~5 hours at the clinic (Day 1), followed by 46 hours of slow infusion of the last drug via a pump attached as a Fannie pack - it's removed on Day 3 of the cycle at the clinic. The Ca19-9 marker in blood is monitored at the start of each 4-week cycle - the numbers are as follows. Prior stable value (until early October 2017) -11 Start of Cycle 1 (Dec 20) - 95.7 Start of Cycle 2 (Jan 22) - 43.1. My oncologist team is pleased with the significant decrease after just one cycle - Karen & I are elated. There were other treatment options when I reached here - it appears they selected the right one, expected of this leading pancreatic cancer center (this particular follow-up treatment to my original one, was established in a clinical trial at this center two years ago). I cannot say how lucky I am to have decided to come here in November 2015! The overall treatment is 6 cycles, a long way to go - it's possible that I could complete some later cycles in Lafayette. This will be established as we make progress - CT scans of the tumors are scheduled every 2 cycles, and are coming up on Feb 16. I must add that it's a tough treatment, with significant side effects which are also cyclic, but the important point is that it's working - praise the Lord! I can work well during 8-9 days out of 14 in each half-cycle. With modern communications, research and other professional activities move smoothly but I miss the daily personal interactions with colleagues and students. Purdue Alert system test today

Hello everyone, I wanted to remind you that Purdue will test the Purdue Alert layered system of notification, including sirens, today, January 25, at 10 am. This is the semi-annual test of the Purdue emergency warning notification system, that includes campus-wide emailing, text messaging, Twitter, information posted to the Campus Status page, All Hazards Outdoor Siren activation, Alertus beacons installed in large classrooms, desktop popup alerts on most classroom and lab computers, more than 200 digital signs, and Boiler TV emergency alert system activation. Although no action is required when the alert system is activated today, I wanted to remind you of our shelter-in-place procedures in case of a weather related emergency: - Calmly move to the basement of either the new or the old wing of the building. - Use one of the staircases: in the FRNY atrium, adjacent to the exit that faces Physics, adjacent to the exit facing Civil Engineering or adjacent to the exit facing the Engineering Mall. - Do not use the elevators. - Take your personal belongings with you, if possible. - Assist those who need help, if possible. - Stay in the shelter location until instructed by emergency personnel that it is safe to leave. Please follow the signs (see below) posted in the building to find the shortest way to the shelter-in-place location.
