Safety inspection of ALL labs and offices in FRNY - next week

Hello everyone, In preparation for the ISP recertification with EHS in March, members of the ChE Safety Committee will conduct safety inspections of ALL labs and offices, starting Monday, February 5, 2024. We will use the forms in the first 2 tabs of the attached Excel workbook. If you have a sensitive experiment running and your lab can't be inspected now, please place a clearly visible note on the entrance door to the lab, and the inspection team will respect that. Reports of the inspections will be sent to PIs and safety officers (for labs) and to occupants of labs (if needed). Any identified deficiencies will need to be corrected within the time specified on the forms. Instructions on how to follow up regarding correction of deficiencies will be communicated when the results of the safety inspections are shared. Thank you for your commitment to safety! Good morning, This is a gentle reminder that the completed ISP self-audit forms are due this coming Monday, February 5; see the initial email below. Please remember that ALL offices and labs/storage rooms need to be audited. Multiple offices can be included on the same form, but each lab/storage space needs a form. The forms need to be signed by the person responsible for that room, i.e.: PI, but can be completed by their designee ( e.g.: safety officer). For self-audits of office space, only section 1-8 have to be completed. I attach the Hazard Assessment Certification for FRNY offices for your information; please answer "yes" to questions 8.1 - 8.4 and "no" to question 8.7 for offices . 2. Sections 9 to 29 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections (section 1 through 29). 3. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, but another person, the supervisor/PI's designee can complete the self-audit. 4. Electronic signatures are accepted on ISP self-audit forms. Please correct identified deficiencies, and record the corrections in the "Comments" section on last page of the form before submitting the forms. You should also record the deficiencies that were not corrected, and list the steps taken to correct them. In addition to completing the self-audit for your labs/shop, please review and update (to be dated within the last 6 months) the following: * Laboratory Door Posting<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/forms/doorpost.pdf> - using this new form which includes a date stamp). This needs to be posted outside the lab, at every entrance including the connecting doors in between labs (if applicable) * Hazard Assessment Certification (should be placed inside the lab, near the entrance) * Chemical inventory for the lab (qualitative) * Lab Specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (at a minimum, the first page needs to be signed by the PI of the lab and dated within the last 6 months). * SDS Records (update printed SDS book with SDSs for newly purchased chemicals). If your group is keeping SDSs saved electronically, please make sure you follow the recommendations issued by the safety committee, that are listed HERE<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Guidelines%20fo…>. SDSs on record should be dated within the last 5 years. * Eye wash station flushing log - please flush eye-wash stations weekly and record the completion in a log. I attach a template that can be used for this activity. Purdue administrators and public safety officials are working with city and county personnel to actively monitor the weather and they ask everyone to remain aware of possibly changing conditions. University officials continue to monitor area surface conditions - and encourage employees to do the same - to be aware of any local travel restrictions that might be in place. Those planning to travel on area roads should monitor their county travel status. To check on the status of CityBus operations, you can download the app or search for the MyCityBus app in the Google Play or Apple App Store or check the CityBus website. Any additional updates will be available on the Purdue campus emergency page.

Hello Everyone, Our School is scheduled to have the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) review at the beginning of March 2024. Part of this process is the completion of the safety self-audit of ALL ChE laboratories AND offices. Safety updates and reminders

Good morning, everyone, and happy New Year! I wanted to communicate a few updates as we start the 2024 year, please see below: 1. The safety committee recently approved the extension of the "One Glove" policy areas in FRNY to include staircases and the area connecting the new and old wing of FRNY on second floor, as shown on page 2-4 in the attached document (the areas where the "One Glove" policy applies are in blue). Please note that there is no change to the "One Glove" policy area in the basement of the old wing. As a reminder, lab coats and one glove may be worn in the areas where the "One Glove" policy applies, but one hand must remain ungloved at all times to avoid contamination of public surfaces. 2. The Gas Cylinder Handling Procedures for FRNY Building<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Gas%20cylinder%…> document was updated to include procedures for returning gas cylinders to the newly added "Return" area. The document is attached and is also available on the ChE safety website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety under "Laboratory Safety requirements". Please remember to retrieve your gas cylinders from the "New arrivals" area promptly after you receive the email from Jason Davenport notifying you that your gas cylinders have arrived. 3. If your group missed the RightCycle Program launch event on 10/25, or just recently decided to participate, please let me know; I'll provide collection boxes and/or stickers and logistics for a successful implementation of the program in your lab(s). As a reminder, our School partnered with Kimberly Clark Professional and joined the RightCycle Program which allows for recycling of non-hazardous, Kimberly Clark branded nitrile gloves (e.g.: purple gloves). The gloves are collected in labs in designated boxes (either the boxes provided by Kimberly Clark, or any other collection container labeled with a special sticker), and once collection boxes are full they are emptied in the designated gaylord box located in FRNY G135. Please get in touch with Jason Davenport (jwdavenport(a)purdue.edu<mailto:jwdavenport@purdue.edu>) during working hours (Mon-Fri, 8 am - 4 pm) to empty your lab's collection box, and then reuse it. Please note that ONLY Kimberly Clark branded, non-hazardous nitrile gloves (those that you would normally dispose of via regular trash) should be collected as part of the RightCycle program; please dispose of your contaminated gloves as hazardous waste through EHS. Please also refrain from disposing of any other items in these RightCycle collection boxes. Good luck with the semester, and please let me know if you have any questions. Announcement - Marilyn Forney's Passing

Dear Faculty and Staff,[cid:image001.jpg@01DA3D94.AAD30060] The School of Chemical Engineering is saddened to report the passing of our dear friend, Marilyn Forney (BSChE '47) of December 29th. Marilyn and her late husband, Bob Forney (BSChE ' 47, PhD ChE '50 HDR '81), were ardent supporters of the School helping and provided a $10M lead gift to build the addition to our building which is now named in their honor. Additionally, each year the School recognizes one graduate student and one undergraduate student whose impact has helped pave the way for women in the field of engineering through the Marilyn Forney Trailblazer Award. Few people have made as great an impact on the Davidson School of Chemical Engineering as Marilyn and Bob Forney. Without hesitation, I can tell you their generosity was the catalyst that inspired so many others to give back to the School. Purdue Chemical Engineering is forever indebted to them for their friendship, generosity, and their leadership. All who knew Marilyn knows she would want us to continue on with our work to the absolute best of our abilities. Additional gifts from Mr. and Mrs. Forney will be forthcoming and provide additional opportunities for advancement. The Forney legacy is one that will always be an integral part of our School's history. As we acknowledge Marilyn's passing, may we also reflect with admiration on the tremendous impact she and Bob have had on our program. Each of us has been impacted by their generosity. Security in the building - intruder operating on third floor of FRNY (new wing)

Good morning, everyone! It was reported to me that last week a few events happened on third floor, new wing of FRNY that led to the conclusion that an ill-intended intruder was present in the building, operating in that area. A smart watch and a lab coat with some items in its pockets were reported missing, and Chapstick was found all over the door handle of the lab. These incidents were observed over the period Tuesday-Friday last week. Please stay vigilant and report any suspicious activity to the police by dialing 911 (emergency) or (765)-404-8221 (non-emergency) Security of our labs and offices is imperative. Please review the information in section 5.15 of Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) (https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/programs/chp2014.pdf) which is dedicated to lab security and states that "The laboratory door should remain locked when not occupied". In addition, it is a federal law that if a lab contains radioactive material, infectious materials, or controlled substances, these labs (or the source, such as a locked cabinet) remain locked when not occupied. The ChE Safety Committee is recommending that faculty members develop their own, internal group policy on how to make sure the labs are not left unlocked when the lab space is unoccupied. When developing and implementing this internal policy, faculty members should take into account the equipment and chemicals stored/used in the lab, so that it is in line with Section 5.15 of Purdue CHP and with the federal requirements. Not adhering to the agreed door policy should be brought to the respective PI's attention. Thank you for your commitment to safety!
