Student Recognition * Graduate students Ranjita Ghose, Aniruddha Kelkar, Krishnaraj Sambath and Anand Venkatesan were felicitated at the Purdue Student Innovator reception on December 5. The reception was attended by acting President Sands as well other officials from the Burton D. Morgan center, Office of Technology Commercialization and Krannert. They were honoring Purdue students who have filed for intellectual property in the last year. * Two ChE undergraduate students, Candace Corso (Fall 2012) and Isaura Frost (Spring 2013) are the recipients of the only two Leonard E. Wood Scholarships given out annually by the Purdue Co-Op program. Co-Op students are awarded the Leonard E. Wood Scholarship in honor of his dedication to the program. A Scholarship in the amount of $900 is given to one Co-Op student each Fall and Spring semester. This enables Dr. Wood's legacy to benefit Co-Op students now and in the future. Miscellaneous * Jeff Valley has been back work since November 14, please address him first for any building issues. * ChE Leadership Library - we have quite a lot of new titles in the ChE Leadership Library, attached you will find a complete list. Let me know if you are interested in borrowing a book. If you have finished with the book you have checked out, please return it to me in FRNY 1060F. New Employees * Brian Cortez - student helper for Jeff Valley. * Jeff Greeley, Associate Professor, will join us on January 2nd. Heating & Air Flow

Be Advised - Today , tomorrow, and Thursday technicians will be shutting down the air handlers on the old side of the building to perform routine maintenance on them. The units will be off for approximately 30 minutes or so as they do the work. You should not feel any difference in temperature during this time but might notice that it will be quieter and there will be no air movement. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you. Storage of Strong acids

ChE Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students, As you know OSHA did inspection of our Department and we performed well and showed good results of Safety culture in our labs, offices and auditoriums. Safety Committee provided audit of several labs on December 6-th addressing OSHA issues. It came to our attention that one aspect of chemicals storage needs to be reviewed and adequate measures have to be taken to comply with OSHA and Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan. We want to remind to segregate storage of Strong acids. Strong Acids: e.g. hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric, perchloric, phosphoric Must be stored separate from weak acids (acetic and formic are combustible) or flammable solvents. Mixing either of these with Strong acids will produce heat and may result in a fire or explosion. Special cases: * nitric acid - is also a strong oxidizer (see below). * perchloric acid: is a very strong oxidizer when heated and can be dangerous; should always be held in a secondary container (e.g. a plastic tub). * chloric acid: is also a very strong oxidizer. Such strong oxidizers must not be stored near any compounds that can be oxidized (like acetic acid or any flammable solvents/solids). We ask that each research group review, discuss and follow-up on this issues. Please contact any of the ChE Safety Committee members for assistance. Safety Committee wish you Safe and Happy Holidays! Epigenetics and Cancer Faculty Candidate Seminar - Tuesday 12/11 at 9 AM

Dear Colleagues, Dr. Andrea Kasinski (Yale University) is our first Biology faculty candidate for an Epigenetics and Cancer Biology search. Andrea's research is focused on exploring the use of miRNAs to dissect tumor initiating pathways and as potential therapeutics in treating disease.
