Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering MELLICHAMP LECTURE Prof. Brian Pfleger College of Engineering, University of Wisconsin "Sustainability via Synthetic Biology - A Growing Role for Biotechnology in the Chemical Industry" Thursday, October 3, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Finding a sustainable alternative for today's petrochemical industry is a major challenge facing chemical engineers and society at large. To be sustainable, routes for converting carbon dioxide and light into organic compounds for use as both fuels and chemical building blocks must be identified, understood, and engineered. Advances in synthetic biology and other biological engineering disciplines have expanded the scope of what can be produced by a living organism. As in other engineering disciplines, synthetic biologists want to apply a general understanding of math and science (e.g. biology, biochemistry) to construct complex systems from well-characterized parts (e.g. DNA, protein). Bio: Brian received his bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from Cornell University in 2000 and earned his PhD in Chemical Engineering in 2005 from the University of California-Berkeley under the supervision of Jay Keasling. Brian's thesis research focused on developing methods of controlling gene expression in bacteria that could be applied to enhancing the biosynthesis of pharmaceuticals. After graduating, he accepted a postdoctoral fellowship in the laboratory of David Sherman at the University of Michigan, where he studied how six Bacillus anthracis enzymes assemble a natural product essential for iron acquisition and pathogenesis. Brian is currently an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering with appointments in Biomedical Engineering, the Microbiology Doctoral Training Program, and the graduate program in Cell and Molecular Biology. Brian's research has been recognized with young investigator awards from 3M, NSF (CAREER), DOE (Early Career), and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research (AFOSR-YIP). Brian also received the Benjamin Smith Reynolds teaching award from the UW-Madison College of Engineering for his efforts to introduce undergraduates to biotechnology. .

President Daniels and GE's Jeff Immelt to Hold Public Discussion on Innovation and Talent

All: GE Chairman and CEO Jeffrey Immelt and Purdue President Mitch Daniels will sit down this Thursday to talk about how the company and the university can work together on global problems, and the public is invited to listen in. "Meeting Our Challenges: A Conversation" will take place from 2:30--3:30 p.m. in Stewart Center's Loeb Playhouse. Among other things, Daniels and Immelt will discuss how innovation and talent development affect GE's global business environment. GE has been the top employer of Purdue graduates over the most recent five-year period. The program is free and open to the public, but tickets are required. Tickets are available at the Stewart Center OR Elliott Hall of Music box offices or by calling 765-494-3933. The Stewart Center box office is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The Elliott Hall of Music box office is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Immelt will spend the day on campus talking to students, faculty and staff about the importance of continued cooperation between GE and Purdue, focused on the education of a global workforce and continued innovation through research. GE will hold a free technology showcase from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Oct. 2 in the Purdue Memorial Union, Room 118. Students, faculty and the public will be able to meet GE researchers who are working on breakthrough technology in areas including advanced manufacturing, intelligent software, sustainable power and the future of medicine. Degnan ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company "The Outlook for Energy: A View to 2040" October 1, 2013 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The world's economies literally run on energy. To support continued economic progress for the world's growing population, more energy will be needed. Even with significant improvements in energy efficiency, the world's total energy demand is expected to be approximately 40 percent higher by 2040 than it was in 2010. The vast majority of this demand increase will take place in developing countries, where economies are growing most rapidly and modern energy supplies are still a precious commodity for millions of people. Meeting higher energy requirements poses many challenges, including boosting efficiency, developing new supplies and managing environmental risks. This presentation summarizes ExxonMobil's long-term outlook for energy. The outlook is developed annually via an ongoing assessment process that has been conducted over decades. The results assist ExxonMobil's business planning, and are shared publicly to help build understanding of the world's energy needs and challenges. The presentation focuses on energy demand to the year 2040, with particular emphasis on the increasing needs of the power generation and transportation sectors. It examines how rising demand will be met from the various energy sources available, including fossil fuels, nuclear power and renewable energies. It also provides insight to the challenge of meeting growing energy needs while significantly mitigating greenhouse global carbon dioxide emissions. Bio: Tom received his B.S. in chemical engineering from the University of Notre Dame, a Ph.D. in the same discipline from the University of Delaware, and an M.B.A. in Finance from the University of Minnesota. He spent four years in 3M's Central Research organization in St. Paul, MN before moving to Mobil Research and Development in 1980. Tom has spent most of his career in exploratory process development, catalysis, catalyst development, and research management working for Mobil and now ExxonMobil Research and Engineering Company. He is presently Manager, New Leads Generation and Breakthrough Technologies and is located at ExxonMobil's Clinton, NJ facility. He is a member of the North American Catalysis Society, the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the American Chemical Society and the Research and Development Council of New Jersey. .

Congratulations to Prof Fabio Ribeiro!

Dear Colleagues, I am very pleased to inform that at their meeting this morning, the Board of Trustees ratified the appointment of Dr. Fabio Ribeiro as the Norris and Eleanor Shreve Professor of Chemical Engineering. Dr. Ribeiro received his PhD degree from Stanford University in 1989. He joined the Purdue faculty in 2003, was promoted to Professor rank in 2006, and has distinguished himself with outstanding research, teaching and service. His area of research is experimental catalysis, with particular emphasis on discovering new catalysts, as well as reaction kinetics and mechanisms. He has authored 88 archival journal publications and is the co-author of one book. He has made over 120 presentations at university and industry seminars, and conferences including many plenary and keynote lectures. He has graduated 20 PhD students, including 16 at Purdue, and is currently advising or co-advising another 21 PhD students. In external recognition, Dr. Ribeiro received the NSF CAREER Award (1997), New York Catalysis Society Excellence in Catalysis Award (2005), and most recently the Henry J. Albert Award from the International Precious Metals Institute (2012); internally, he received a University Faculty Scholar (2006-11) and Team Excellence Award of the CoE (2007) recognitions. He is a member of Editorial Board for two journals and, since 2010, an Editor of the Journal of Catalysis, the flagship journal of the field. He has also served AIChE in various leadership roles, including Chair of the Catalysis & Reaction Engineering Division (2010), and is currently serving as a Director of the North American Catalysis Society (2013-2017). Finally, he has demonstrated excellence in teaching and provided devoted service to the School, particularly as a long-standing faculty member of the School's Safety Committee and as Chair of the Instrumentation Committee. The procedure to select the Shreve Professor was as follows. Earlier this year, all Professors in our School were requested to submit CVs for consideration and several did. Following University guidelines, a School level committee was established to consider candidates - it included all the School's Distinguished and Named professors. The committee voted enthusiastically to award the Shreve Professorship to Dr. Ribeiro. All candidates were informed of the selection soon after the committee's decision. Dr. R. Norris Shreve was a distinguished member of our School's faculty during 1930-55 and served as the third School Head during 1947-51. This e-mail is to announce that Anand David will be defending his dissertation, Effect of Manufacturing Conditions on the Performance of Lithium-Ion Batteries, on Tuesday, October 1st, at 1:30 p.m. in FRNY 3062A. The dissertation is being directed by Dr. Caruthers, and the abstract is below. All are welcome to attend. Lithium ion batteries are a fascinating area of research. Lithium ion batteries are found almost everywhere people are in America, including in homes, schools, hospitals, offices, and laboratories. They power many of today's electronics such as cell phones, laptops, tablet PCs, and e-readers that are widely used by many people. In addition to these applications, lithium ion batteries are being used in electric vehicles that have been introduced in recent years by companies such as General Motors and Tesla Motors. Lithium ion batteries are also being actively investigated for use in military applications. To be used in auto and military applications, these batteries, including the underlying electrodes used, must be made consistently to ensure proper performance and safety. To date, much of the research in academia relating to lithium ion batteries has dealt with new chemistries that provide higher capacities and rate capabilities. This is a very important and intriguing area of research. At the same time, there has been a lack of research related to manufacturing defect detection and the effects of manufacturing defects on battery performance. A flash thermography technique has been recently developed that can rapidly detect a number of different manufacturing defects in electrode films, and the relationship between these defects and resulting battery performance has been investigated.
