Hello Everyone, The Chemical Engineering Safety Committee is accepting nominations for the 2025 ChE Excellence in Safety Award. Please find attached the nomination form, award description and details on eligibility and selection criteria. Eligibility: Any ChE graduate student who completed one year of graduate studies in our School at the nomination deadline is eligible for the award. Award recipients are ineligible to be nominated again for this award. Nomination Process: Any ChE faculty member, staff, postdoc, graduate or undergraduate student performing research can nominate any eligible ChE graduate student. A nominator can support only one candidate. Please submit your nominations to Robin Waling at rwaling(a)purdue.edu<mailto:rwaling@purdue.edu>, by 11:59 pm on Friday, April 4, 2025. FYI concerning upcoming networking hardware maintenance. Please plan accordingly if necessary: Work to be Performed and Why: Network Engineering and Operations staff will replace core networking hardware for this maintenance. These devices are approaching the end of their service life and are due to be upgraded. Staff will remove cabling and hardware, install new hardware, and then replace cabling. During the maintenance window all services, wired and wireless and VoIP will be unavailable and/or intermittent from 10:00PM - 6:00AM. Would you be willing to act as a judge at the 2025 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair? If you are receiving this message, it means you are eligible to volunteer as a judge in the 2025 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Friday March 7, 2025. It will be an in-person event at Stewart Center from 5:30-9:30 PM. This year, we have over 500 young experimentalists (5-12 graders) eagerly awaiting a chance to share their projects with you. The fair is only a few days away, so right now they are working hard on their projects. Students are going the extra mile this year to prepare presentations, and having many judges from a variety of disciplines helps us award prizes most fairly to deserving projects. That's where you come in. For those who have done this in the past you remember how it was the first time you judged - so many abstracts and projects to look at! Because of this, we need lots of help to give these students a great science fair experience. Judging really is a lot of fun, and not terribly difficult since the kids are high school age or younger. Please come out and help support this event! This event is s great way to volunteer with the community and can look great on a resume. A free dinner voucher is also provided at the event. Safety inspection of ALL labs and offices in FRNY - next week

Hello everyone, In preparation for the ISP safety review with EHS, members of the ChE Safety Committee will conduct safety inspections of ALL labs and offices, starting Monday, February 24, 2025. We will use the forms in the first 2 tabs of the attached Excel workbook. If you have a sensitive experiment running and your lab can't be inspected now, please place a clearly visible note on the entrance door to the lab, and the inspection team will respect that. Reports of the inspections will be sent to PIs and safety officers (for labs) and to occupants of offices (if needed). Any identified deficiencies will need to be corrected within the time specified on the forms. Instructions on how to follow up regarding correction of deficiencies will be communicated when the results of the safety inspections are shared. Thank you for your commitment to safety! Importance: High Hello Everyone, Our School is scheduled to have the Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) review at the beginning of April 2025. Part of this process is the completion of the safety self-audit of ALL ChE laboratories AND offices using the Integrated Safety Plan Self-Audit Checklist<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/forms/ispcheck.pdf> (also attached). Please only use these forms, as they are the most up-to-date forms used University wide. One form needs to be completed for EACH lab/storage area/machine shop. However, multiple offices (but not labs) can be included on the same form. The first page of the document provides more information. 1. The first eight sections have universal questions that apply to every area. For self-audits of office space, only section 1-8 have to be completed. I attach the Hazard Assessment Certification for FRNY offices for your information; please answer "yes" to questions 8.1 - 8.4 and "no" to question 8.7 for offices 2. Sections 9 to 29 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections (section 1 through 29). 3. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, but another person, the supervisor/PI's designee can complete the self-audit. 4. Electronic signatures are accepted on ISP self-audit forms. Please correct identified deficiencies, and record the corrections in the "Comments" section on last page of the form before submitting the forms. You should also record the deficiencies that were not corrected, and list the steps taken to correct them. In addition to completing the self-audit for your labs/shop, please review and update (to be dated within the last 6 months) the following: * Laboratory Door Posting<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/forms/doorpost.pdf> - use this form which includes a date stamp. This needs to be posted outside the lab, at every entrance including the connecting doors in between labs (if applicable) * Hazard Assessment Certification (should be placed inside the lab, near each entrance, including connecting doors) * Chemical inventory for the lab (qualitative) * Lab Specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (at a minimum, the first page needs to be signed by the PI of the lab and dated within the last 6 months). * SDS Records (update printed SDS book with SDSs for newly purchased chemicals). If your group is keeping SDSs saved electronically, please make sure you follow the recommendations issued by the safety committee, that are listed HERE<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Guidelines%20fo…>. SDSs on record should be dated within the last 5 years. * Eye wash station flushing log - please flush eye-wash stations weekly and record the completion in a log. I attach a template that can be used for this activity. The ChE Safety Committee will perform safety inspections of all laboratories and offices at the beginning of March and will send the inspection reports to faculty and their group safety officers. Deficiencies identified in your audits and during the safety inspections must be addressed before the recertification meeting with EHS.
