Zydney Department of Chemical Engineering The Pennsylvania State University "Purification of DNA for Gene Therapy and Vaccines - New Opportunities for Membrane Technology" Tuesday, February 9, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: There is growing interest in using DNA for gene therapy and DNA-based vaccines. Existing methods for DNA purification are inadequate for large-scale commercial production. This talk examines the possibility of using membrane ultrafiltration for the purification of supercoiled plasmid DNA. DNA transmission during ultrafiltration is a strong function of filtrate flux due to flow-induced elongation of the plasmid associated with the converging flow into the membrane pores. Transmission of the open circular DNA was significantly less than that of the supercoiled plasmid, while transmission of the linear DNA was considerably enhanced due to differences in conformational flexibility. New opportunities for enhancing DNA purification were identified using membranes with controlled pore morphology. The results clearly demonstrate the potential of using membrane systems for commercial-scale purification of DNA. Bio: Dr. Andrew L. Zydney is currently Distinguished Professor of Chemical Engineering at The Pennsylvania State University, having served as Head of that Department from 2004-2014. Professor Zydney received his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from M.I.T. in 1985, and he was a faculty member in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of Delaware from 1985 - 2001. Professor Zydney's research is focused on membrane science and technology, with a particular emphasis on bioseparations and the purification of high value biological products. He has published more than 170 articles on these topics, including invited contributions to the Encyclopedia of Bioprocess Technology and the Handbook of Biomedical Engineering. Professor Zydney is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Membrane Science, and he serves on the Editorial Boards for Separation and Purification Reviews, Separation Science and Technology, Journal of Colloid and Interface Science, and Biotechnology and Bioengineering. He served as President of the North American Membrane Society in 2002 - 2003, and was a member of the Board of Directors for 9 years. He was elected a fellow of the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers in 1998 and of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2011. Dr. Zydney has received Excellence in Teaching Awards from the University of Delaware and the Penn State Engineering Alumni Society, and he is a past recipient of the Distinguished Teacher Award and the Outstanding Young Faculty Award from the American Society of Engineering Education.

BE ADVISED - The shutdown that was scheduled for this Thursday has been changed to this WEDNESDAY 1-27-16. All the fume hoods and the air handlers for all labs will be shutdown starting at 8 am and will be down approximately for 4 hours. This shutdown is due to needing to relocate a control panel in the penthouse in the addition. The old side of the building will not be affected nor will offices, public areas and classrooms in the addition. If you have any questions please send them to the frny blding. Thank you. Jeff Valley

[cid:image006.png@01D14E0C.259C7640]<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE> Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering GRADUATE SEMINAR SERIES Dr. Matthew Tirrell Institute for Molecular Engineering University of Chicago and Argonne National Laboratory "Polyelectrolytes in Multivalent ionic Media: New Physics and New Materials" Tuesday, January 26, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Multi-valent interactions in systems of polyelectrolytes can exhibit dramatic, non-monotonic effects, for example, switching forces from repulsive to attractive, and back to repulsive again, in some cases. We have been studying these patterns of behavior with the surface forces apparatus (SFA) and with electrochemical methods, such as cyclic voltametry, which enables the quantitative determination of the number of multi-valent ions residing in thin layers of charged polymers. At fixed ionic strength, all cause strong shrinkage and condensation of poly(styrene sulfonate) brushes over a narrow range of ratio multi-valent to mono-valent ions. When the multi-valent ion is an oppositely charged polymer, new fluid phases can form. Charged blocks in copolymers leads to materials with new types of ordered phases. Effects of these multi-valent interactions on supermolecular and biomolecular assembly will be discussed. There are many possibilities for the creation of new materials based on electrostatic assembly involving multi-valent interactions. Bio: Matthew Tirrell is the founding Pritzker Director of the Institute for Molecular Engineering at the University of Chicago and Deputy Laboratory Director for Science at the Argonne National Laboratory. Immediately prior to joining the University of Chicago in 2011, he was the Arnold and Barbara Silverman Professor and Chair of Bioengineering at the University of California, Berkeley, with additional appointments in chemical engineering and materials science & engineering, and as a Faculty Scientist at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Tirrell received a B.S. in Chemical Engineering at Northwestern University in 1973 and a Ph.D. in 1977 in Polymer Science from the University of Massachusetts. From 1977 to 1999, he was on the faculty of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science at the University of Minnesota, where he served as department head from 1995 to 1999. Professor Tirrell completed ten years as Dean of Engineering at the University of California, Santa Barbara on June 30, 2009. He has co-authored about 350 papers and one book and has supervised about 80 Ph.D. students. Professor Tirrell is a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Academy of Arts & Sciences and the Indian National Academy of Engineering, and is a Fellow of: the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineers, the AAAS, and the APS. Professor Tirrell has extensive consulting and scientific advisory board experience in both the materials science and biotech/biomedical sectors.

Addition SHUTDOWN

BE ADVISED - As part of the renovation, next Thursday 1-28-16 starting at 8am there will a shutdown of all the fume hoods and the air handlers on the addition side of the building and this shutdown will last approximately 4 hours or until around noon. During this time there should not be anyone working in the labs due to safety concerns. Offices and public areas will not be affected and this does not affect any of the old side of the building. Passing of Bob Henson (BSChE'36)

Dear Colleagues, I am sorry to inform that our distinguished alumnus and major benefactor, Mr. Robert T. Henson (BSChE '36) passed away yesterday morning in Atlanta. He founded Flexible Products Company in 1951. By the time it was sold to Dow Chemical in 2000, it had grown to become one of the largest polyurethane suppliers in North America. Bob received the School's OChE award in 1989. The Robert T. Henson Atrium in Forney Hall was named in recognition of the Hensons' generosity to the School of Chemical Engineering. They received the President's Council Distinguished Pinnacle Award in the atrium during "The Campaign for Purdue" celebration on June 30, 2007. I visited with Bob and Coc, and later only him after she passed away in 2010, annually in December for many years at their Atlanta home. You may recall that his 100th birthday was celebrated on October 11, 2014, which I had the pleasure to attend. The attached story about Bob and the celebration was published in our Spring 2015 School newsletter. The funeral ceremony will be held in Atlanta this Saturday - David Williams will attend to represent our School. Our thoughts and prayers are with Bob's family. Arvind Arvind Varma R. Siirola Department of Chemical Engineering Purdue University "The Impact of Shale Gas and Oil on the Chemical Industry" Tuesday, January 19, 2016 3:00 - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Lower alkanes and aromatics are very useful as both fuels and chemical feedstocks. Occasionally limited supplies have constrained demand but also encouraged investigation of alternative chemistries and feedstocks. New technologies for the production of unconventional gas and oil sources in shale formations has significantly increased availability, altered economics, changed demand, and multiplied the ways traditional and alternative chemistries might be exploited. This presentation will outline how natural gas became useful as a chemical feedstock, how government regulations led to shifts in availability, the development of alternative chemistries and catalysts, and the exploitation of shale resources, all of which are having a significant impact on the chemical industry. Bio: Jeff Siirola retired in 2011 as a Technology Fellow at Eastman Chemical Company in Kingsport Tennessee where he had been for more than 39 years. He now holds half time positions as Professor of Engineering Practice at Purdue University and Distinguished Service Professor of Sustainable Energy Systems at Carnegie Mellon University. He received a BS in chemical engineering from the University of Utah in 1967 and a PhD in chemical engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1970. His areas of interest include chemical process synthesis, computer-aided process engineering, design theory and methodology, process development and technology assessment, resource conservation and recovery, sustainable development and growth, carbon management, and chemical engineering education. Siirola just completed two terms as Secretary of ABET. He is also a trustee and past president of CACHE (Computer Aids for Chemical Engineering Education), and a member of the American Chemical Society, the Association for the Advancement of Artificial Intelligence, and the American Society for Engineering Education. He has served on numerous National Research Council, National Science Foundation, and Department of Energy panels, and on the advisory boards of several journals and chemical engineering departments. He is also a member of the National Academy of Engineering and was the 2005 President of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers.
