Dr. Jeff Varner to join our faculty this Fall!

Dear All, At a recent "Conversations with the Head" meeting, some graduate students requested to be informed when a new faculty member joins our School. I am delighted to inform that Dr. Jeffrey Varner, currently at Cornell University, will join our School as Professor this fall. Dr. Varner received his PhD degree in 1997 from our School, under the direction of Prof. Ramkrishna. Following a postdoctoral appointment at ETH-Zurich, he was first with Genencor, then joined Cornell University as an Assistant Professor in 2005 and has been a tenured Associate Professor since 2011. His research interests are in modeling and analysis of signal transduction and metabolic networks, where he has developed computational tools to automate model generation, identification and analysis. His recognitions include an NSF CAREER award (2009), a Cornell College of Engineering Teaching Excellence award (2010), NAE Frontiers of Engineering invitee (2005), and two College-level undergraduate research mentorship awards (2012, 2014). He has held a variety of leadership service positions at Cornell, including Director of both Masters of Science and Masters of Engineering programs in their School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering. You may recall his graduate seminar in our School on March 5, 2015. Dr. Varner will add significantly to our strengths in the areas of biological research. Summary of safety incidents in FRNY

Hello Everyone, Please find attached a summary of the safety incidents and near misses that occurred in our School and were reported to me from my last report until now. I hope that sharing this information with you will prevent similar situations from happening. Please continue to report all safety incidents and near misses using the form "Safety Incident/Near Miss Report" posted on our website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html under "Workplace Injury Information". As a reminder, when someone is injured during a safety incident, even if the injury does not require medical attention, this needs to also be reported to REM, using the First Report of Injury (FROI) form: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/home/forms/froi.pdf. Odor

All, On the corner of the old 2nd floor in the mop closet by the men's restroom they installed a stainless steel sheet on the wall which was attached with a certain kind of adhesive that has a very strong odor to it. I have heard some sensors are going into alarm in some labs which is probably related directly to this odor. It will dissipate but not for a while. Since it is late in the day and will be after business hours shortly, if you have concerns later tonight please call the Purdue police business # 48221 and report the problem and they will send personnel to investigate. Dear All, It's my great pleasure to inform that Carl Laird is recipient of the 2015 AIChE CAST Division Outstanding Young Researcher Award. Established in 2004, this award recognizes an individual under the age of 40 for outstanding contributions to the chemical engineering computing and systems technology literature. The award will be presented at the AIChE annual meeting this Fall, and includes a plaque and check for $3,000. Pl join me in congratulating Carl for this terrific recognition! Arvind

Hazard Assessment Certification for FRNY offices

Hello Everyone! As an OSHA requirement, all offices and administrative areas need to have a current Hazard Assessment Certification on file. This doesn't have to be posted in the office; it can be kept in a central location. REM agreed that a general Hazard Assessment Certification, to cover the work in all of our offices, is acceptable. Please find attached, for your information, a copy of the Hazard Assessment Certification that covers the work in FRNY offices and administrative areas. This doesn't have to be posted in any of our offices; I keep the original on file, with the safety records for the School. Should you have any questions, please let me know. Appointment at Sheffield University

Dear Colleagues I write to let you know that I have accepted a position of Professor of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Engineering at The University of Sheffield to start in January 2016, subject to a successful visa application to the UK. At Sheffield, I will be establishing new teaching and research programs on pharmaceutical engineering and particulate products, as well as taking a strategic leadership role in teaching and learning in the Chemical and Biological Engineering School. The move is for a mixture of personal/family and professional reasons. The decision was a difficult and complex one, and I will miss the many exciting things happening here at Purdue. I want to thank you all for your support as colleagues, and especially Arvind for his patience and support during this process. I will be here for the full Fall semester and a frequent visitor, I hope, after taking up my new position. I look forward to working with you all for the rest of the year. I wanted to communicate this news with you as soon as I reasonably could.
