Mandatory safety training refresher

Hello Everyone! Following REM's recommendation and to comply with Purdue and OSHA safety training requirements, the ChE Safety Committee developed an on-line safety training refresher. This yearly refresher training is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students and post-doctoral research associates and should be completed within 30 days of its announcement (you will receive an email every year with instructions on how to complete the on-line training and the due date). This year, everyone should complete the on-line safety training refresher by the end of Sunday, May 17, 2015. You can access the training material on any device linked to the internet; however, you will need a computer/laptop to take the quiz at the end and complete the training (the link to the quiz is not active from a mobile device such as an iPad or other tablets). Instructions: 1. Access the ChE safety website https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html and click on the Annual Safety Training Refresher<https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h…> link under the Training heading. Alternatively, you can follow this link: https://engineering.purdue.edu/Intranet/Groups/Schools/ChE/SafetyTraining.h… to access the dedicated safety refresher web page. 2. Log-in with your Purdue credentials and click on the link that best describes your status in our School to access the training material relevant to you. 3. You can choose to download the training material on your computer or open it directly in your browser (in this case you will not be able to access to the training material during the quiz). 4. Read and understand the training material and follow the active links in the document (where applicable) for more information on specific topics. 5. Follow the "Take the quiz" link at the end of the document and take the short quiz to complete this part of the training. Once you complete the quiz, you will receive an email confirming that you completed the training. Print that email (or save it) and keep it for your own records. 6. If applicable, read the updated lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) developed for the lab you work in (or, as PI, are responsible for) and complete the certification page (page 85 in the CHP template posted on REM's website: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/home/booklets/chp2014.pdf) 7. Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Elias Franses School of Chemical Engineering Purdue University "Stability of Dispersions of Colloidal Particles Against Agglomeration and Sedimentation: Science and Applications" April 21, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: A key theme of my career has been how surfactants aggregate in solution and affect various phenomena at oil/water, air/water, and solid/liquid interfaces. These phenomena have important applications in enhanced oil recovery, production of natural gas, and the stabilization of lungs alveoli (air sacs used in breathing) against collapse. Surfactants are also used extensively as dispersants, for improving the stability of dispersed colloidal particles and nanoparticles against agglomeration, as is needed for stable emulsions, foams, and paints. Such stability is also important for low-viscosity inks used in inkjet printers. Even when nanoparticles of high-density materials are stable against agglomeration, they still tend to settle. This settling should be avoided without compromising the product quality. I will describe in some detail how surfactants affect the colloidal dispersion stability of inks and other dispersions. Then I will describe how a lifelong interest in studying surfactant properties has led to a recent important discovery on how to keep dispersions of high-density colloidal particles stable against both agglomeration and sedimentation. Bio: Professor Franses has been at Purdue since 1979, with a one-year absence as a program director at the National Science Foundation in 1990-1991. He has published about 130 papers in refereed journals and several more in refereed books. He has mentored about 25 Ph. D. students, and many undergraduate research participants. In this research he has collaborated substantially with Professors Caruthers, Wang, and Corti. He was an editor of the Journal Colloids and Surfaces, and a member of the editorial board of the Journal of Colloid and Interface Science. He has taught Thermodynamics, Colloidal and Interfacial Phenomena, Unit Operations Laboratory, Reaction Engineering, and several other subjects to hundreds of graduate students and thousands of undergraduate students. In 2014 he published an undergraduate textbook on Thermodynamics with Chemical Engineering Applications.

Peppas Cockrell Family Regents Chair in Engineering University of Texas at Austin "Multiresponsive Nanogels for the Delivery of Small Interfering RNA and Advanced Protein Therapeutic Agents" Tuesday, April 28, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract. Engineering the molecular design of intelligent biomaterials by controlling structure, recognition and specificity is the first step in coordinating and duplicating complex biological and physiological processes. Recent developments in siRNA and protein delivery have been directed towards the preparation of targeted formulations for protein delivery to specific sites, use of environmentally-responsive polymers to achieve pH- or temperature-triggered delivery, usually in modulated mode, and improvement of the behavior of their mucoadhesive behavior and cell recognition. We address design and synthesis characteristics of novel crosslinked networks capable of protein release as well as artificial molecular structures capable of specific molecular recognition of biological molecules. We have been successful in synthesizing novel protein-binding molecules based on non-covalent directed interactions. We have also developed structurally superior materials to serve as effective carriers for siRNA delivery to combat Crohn disease and ulcerative colitis. "Intelligent Polymer Hydrogels: From Obscure Molecular Structures to Useful Multifunctional Systems" Wednesday, April 29, 2015 11:30 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. FRNY 3059 Abstract. Cross-linked polymeric networks with diverse characteristics and properties have been in the center of polymer physics research over the past 40 years. We examine how the field started in the early 1930s and how chemical engineers and chemists set the fundamentals of molecular structures and theories for the Gaussian and non-Gaussian behavior of these networks. We address the highly non-ideal thermodynamic behavior of such systems and present the latest theories of solute diffusion through them. We address the so-called "intelligence" of such networks in physiological and other solutions. We conclude with directions for future research in this field. Bio. Nicholas A. Peppas is the Cockrell Family Regents Chaired Professor in the Departments of Chemical, Biomedical Engineering and Pharmacy, Chairman of the Department of Biomedical Engineering and Director of the Institute of Biomaterials, Drug Delivery and Regenerative Medicine of the University of Texas at Austin. His work in biomaterials, polymer physics, drug delivery and bionanotechnology follows a multidisciplinary approach by blending modern molecular and cellular biology with engineering principles to design the next-generation of medical systems and devices for patient treatment. Over the past 40 years he has set the fundamentals and rational design of drug delivery systems and developed models of drug and protein diffusion in controlled release devices and biological tissues. A significant portion of this work was performed at Purdue University (1976-2002) where Peppas was Professor of Chemical Engineering as well as the Showalter Distinguished Professor Biomedical Engineering. In 2012 he received the Founders Award of the National Academy of Engineering (NAE), the highest recognition of the Academy, for these contributions to the field. Peppas is a member of the NAE, Institute of Medicine of the National Academies, National Academy of Inventors, the National Academy of France, the Royal Academy of Spain, the Academy of Athens and the Academy of Texas. He has been recognized with awards from AIChE (Founders Award, William Walker Award, Institute Lecture, Jay Bailey Award, Bioengineering Award, Materials Award), the Biomedical Engineering Society (Distinguished Scientist Award), the American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (Galletti Award), the Society for Biomaterials (Founders, Clemson and Hall Awards), the Controlled Release Society (Founders, Heller and Eurand Awards) and other societies. In 2008, AIChE named him on of the One Hundred Chemical Engineers of the Modern Era. He is President of the International Union of Societies of Biomaterials Science and Engineering, Chair of the Engineering Section of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, and Past-Chair of the Council of BME Chairs. Previously, he served as President of SFB and the Controlled Release Society. He is a fellow of AAAS, AIChE, APS, ACS, MRS, SFB, BMES, AIMBE, CRS, AAPS, and ASEE. He has supervised the research of 100 PhDs and about 180 postdocs and graduate students. Peppas holds a Dipl. Eng. from the NTU of Athens (1971), a Sc.D. from MIT (1973), and honorary doctorates from the Universities of Ghent, Parma, Athens, Ljubljana and Sichuan.

[blackwelder] School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Lizbeth Rostro School of Chemical Engineering Purdue University "Synthesis, Optimization, and Characterization of Radical Polymers for Organic Electronic Applications" Thursday, April 16, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Electrically-active organic materials have attracted much attention in recent years due to their chemical tunability and relatively high performance in organic electronic devices. Here, we focus on a new class of conducting polymers, which contain a non-conjugated backbone and an electrically-active pendant stabilized radical group. These radical polymers are synthesized using a facile, scalable polymerization mechanism. For the first time, we have established that these materials are electrically-active in the solid state. Additionally, we demonstrate that the electronic properties of these materials can be tuned in order to provide specific performance in a range of applications (e.g., plastic solar cells). Bio: Lizbeth Rostro studied chemical engineering at the University of Arkansas - Fayetteville. During her time there she was afforded the opportunity to undertake three co-op rotations with The Dow Chemical Company. After graduating with a B.S. in chemical engineering from Arkansas in 2011, she began her graduate studies at Purdue University under the supervision of Professor Bryan Boudouris. In 2012 she was named as an awardee of the National Science Foundation (NSF) Graduate Research Fellowship Program (GRFP). Upon the completion of her doctoral degree in August 2015, she will begin a full-time appointment at The Dow Chemical Company in Freeport, Texas.
