Walton III '74 Professor in Engineering Princeton University "Accessing Polymorphism and Tuning Molecular Orientation in Solution-processed Organic Semiconductors" September 30, 2014 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15-10:45 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Though both the molecular orientation and crystal structure of molecular semiconductors are known to impact charge transport in thin-film devices, controllably accessing different polymorphs and tuning both the in-plane and out-of-plane molecular orientations remain challenging, requiring careful selection of film deposition conditions, film thickness, and substrate chemistry. Without necessitating any specification of these parameters, we have been able to impose specific polymorphs and/or preferential molecular orientation through post-deposition processing. In the case of contorted hexabenzocoronene (HBC), we can access two distinct polymorphs and independently vary the distributions of its out-of plane molecular orientation. Starting with a thermally evaporated amorphous HBC film, thermal and solvent-vapor annealing induces the thin film to crystallize into distinct polymorphs; we can further transform between the polymorphs with subsequent rounds of processing. Because the molecular orientation distribution is primarily determined during the first processing step, subjecting already crystalline thin films to different post-deposition processing conditions allows us to access different polymorphs without altering the molecular orientation distribution, thus enabling us to decouple the influence of each on charge transport. In the case of solution-processable triethylsilylethnyl anthradithiophene (TES ADT), we have been able to exploit its differential crystallization rates on substrates having different surface energies to guide the in-plane growth direction of neighboring crystals. The systematic engineering of solely low- and high-angle grain boundaries between neighboring crystals have allowed us to elucidate their relative contribution to charge transport. Bio: Lynn Loo is the Theodora D. '78 & William H. Walton III '74 Professor in Engineering at Princeton University. In the Chemical & Biological Engineering Department, her research emphasizes the structure development of complex materials for low-cost, lightweight and scalable plastic circuits and solar cells. With her recent stint at NewWorld Capital Group, a private equity firm that focuses on investments in environmental opportunities, Lynn's research has expanded to include macro-energy-systems analysis and carbon balance for processes that generate liquid fuels. As the Associate Director of External Partnerships at the Andlinger Center for Energy and the Environment, Lynn leads the Princeton Effiliates Partnership that promotes teacher-student-practitioner interactions and fosters collaboration between the private sector and faculty on campus. Lynn received her PhD from Princeton University in 2001. She is a fellow of the American Physical Society and has been recognized as a Top 100 Young Innovator by MIT's Technology Review, with the Alan P. Colburn Award from the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the John H. Dillon Medal of the American Physical Society and Sloan and Beckman Fellowships. Prior to joining Dow, he served as the Global Technology Director and Chief Technology Officer for DuPont Electronic Technologies. Prior to this, he served as Vice President of Worldwide Technology for Cookson Electronics, and before that he led the Electronic and Flat Display Program for Sarnoff Corporation. Sreeram, who holds more than 20 U.S.-issued patents, earned his doctorate degree in 1995 from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), and his master's degree in Glass Science from Alfred University in New York. He is also a graduate of the ceramics engineering program from the Indian Institute of Technology - BHU in Varanasi, India.

Purdue University School of Chemical Engineering Graduate seminar series Prof. Ruben Carbonell Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor North Carolina State University "Challenges and Recent Advances in the Purification of Biotherapeutics" September 23, 2014 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15-10:45 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: An exciting and fast growing area in medicine involves the use of proteins such as antibodies derived from genetically modified organisms to treat serious chronic diseases. Unfortunately, the high cost of development and production of these biological drugs makes them inaccessible to many individuals, especially in developing countries. There is a growing demand for faster, more efficient and safe approaches for the production of complex biotherapeutics. This seminar will describe some novel purification approaches for biologics that utilize selective small peptide ligands that recognize and bind to protein products and high throughput, high capacity membranes for product capture and purification. Bio: Ruben G. Carbonell is the Frank Hawkins Kenan Distinguished Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at NC State University, which he joined in 1984 after 10 years in the Chemical Engineering Department at the University of California, Davis. He is the Director of both the Biomanufacturing Training and Education Center (BTEC) and the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology & Science at NC State. Prof. Carbonell has authored over 230 peer-reviewed publications in international journals and he has trained 77 MS and PhD students and 36 postdoctoral students during his academic career. Dr. Carbonell is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and he is a Fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers, and the Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Division of the American Chemical Society. He completed his B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from Manhattan College in 1969 and his Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from Princeton University in 1973. Examples of these interfaces include very large macromolecules, membranes bounding intracellular compartments and the cell membrane itself. Interfacial behavior of biomolecules is also important in several technological applications such as DNA-based nanomaterials, biosensors, and microarrays. In this talk, I will discuss several ongoing research problems in my group that illustrate rich behavior exhibited by biomolecules (protein, DNA) at interfaces. Bio: Jeetain Mittal received his doctorate in chemical engineering from the University of Texas, Austin, his master's degree in chemical engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology and his bachelor's degree, also in chemical engineering, from Punjab Technical University. Near miss in FRNY

Hello Everyone, I would like to share with you a recent near miss involving one of our graduate students using the Liquid Nitrogen (LN2) facility located on the western side of the physics building. The near miss (incident) occurred on Friday, September 5, around 1 pm and involved a ChE graduate student and an empty LN2 tank/cart system. No injuries were reported. To gain access to a previously filled LN2 tank, the researcher attempted to move the empty LN2 tank, left in upright position on a cart, near the LN2 refill station. The system responsible with securing the LN2 tank to the cart relied on a spring mechanism that later proved to be defective. When the tank/cart system was tilted to be moved out of the way, the spring locking mechanism on the cart disengaged, causing the empty tank to fall on the concrete platform. The damaged tank has been removed from service and the cart is being replaced with a newer and much safer design. Lessons learned: 1. Never try to remove a gas cylinder/LN2 tank before you check that the system is in good working order and it is safe to do so. 2. Never use defective carts. 3. Always follow the instructions on the side of the cart (if available) when moving/transporting gas cylinders (including LN2 tanks). 4. It is recommended that in-house training on how to safely use the gas cylinder/LN2 tank carts is provided to every student using this type of equipment. The training should be provided by the PI or by his/her designated safety officer (lead graduate student). Today around 12pm many people received a message with the subject of "Blackboard" and link to "Sign In" This was a phishing email designed to steal your account and password information. If you clicked the link AND signed in to the fake site, you should change your career account password. If you find you can't log in to Purdue systems then ITAP may have already scrambled your password to prevent your account from being compromised. If ITAP locks your account I can't unlock it - you have to call ITAP at 765-494-4000. When in doubt you should always go to the official sites and not use links in emails unless you are 100% positive they are legit (and even then you should examine the actual link). This e-mail is to announce that Vinod Kumar Venkatakrishnan will be defending his dissertation, Lab-Scale Fast-Hydropyrolysis and Vapor-Phase Catalytic Hydrodeoxygenation for Producing Liquid Fuel Range Hydrocarbons from Intact Biomass , on Friday, July 11th ' at 1:00PM in FRNY 3062B. The dissertation is being co-advised by Doctors Agrawal, Delgass, and Ribeiro, and the abstract is below. All are welcome to attend. Abstract: Liquid transportation fuels are primarily produced from petroleum-based non-renewable carbon sources. Sustainably available lignocellulosic biomass, as a renewable form of atmospheric carbon, could be utilized to produce hydrocarbon-based fuels with high energy density. One of the process options for this conversion is the H2Bioil process, where biomass is rapidly heated in a hydrogen environment to produce fast-hydropyrolysis vapors that are catalytically upgraded in downstream hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) to produce hydrocarbons. This process has been modeled to have high carbon and energy efficiencies of ~70% and ~75%, respectively. This dissertation presents the results of a lab-scale experimental proof-of-concept for the H2Bioil process for converting intact biomass to liquid fuel range hydrocarbons. Based on various prototype designs for high pressure (up to 68 bar) fast-pyrolysis in an inert environment, a cyclone-type fast-hydropyrolysis reactor system along with downstream vapor-phase catalytic HDO reactor was designed and constructed. A liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry based analytical technique was developed for quantitative compositional analysis of the cellulose pyrolysis liquid products. Levoglucosan and its isomers, cellobiosan, water and light oxygenates like formic acid, glycolaldehyde and hydroxyacetone are the major products of cellulose fastpyrolysis. Increasing pyrolysis temperature in the range of 480 ºC to 580 ºC was found to increase the formation of light oxygenates, due to the increase in thermal cracking, and to decrease carbon recovery in the liquid. Comparison of cellulose fast-pyrolysis and fasthydropyrolysis experiments showed that H2 does not play an important role in deoxygenation even up to 50 bar H2 partial pressures in the absence of a downstream HDO catalyst. Candidate catalyst screening and previous work from our research group revealed that adding an oxophillic promoter, such as Mo, along with the hydrogenation function of Pt, could increase C-O bond scission. Hence, a 5wt%Pt-2.5wt%Mo catalyst supported on multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was tested for HDO of fast-hydropyrolysis vapors from cellulose, as a model biomass feedstock, and poplar, as a real biomass feedstock. The total C1-C8+ hydrocarbon yield (as % carbon of feed) with cellulose was ~73%, the liquid fuel range (C4+) hydrocarbon yield was ~55%, with a major fraction as C6 hydrocarbons from the HDO of levoglucosan and its isomers. The total C1-C8+ hydrocarbon yield (as % carbon of feed) with poplar was ~54%, and the liquid fuel range hydrocarbon yield (C4+) was ~32%, with a major fraction as C8+ hydrocarbons from the HDO of lignin fragments. Increasing the HDO temperature from 300 ºC to 350 ºC increased the C-C bond scission and led to higher yields of CO and lower yields of C4+ hydrocarbons. Independent control of fast-hydropyrolysis and HDO temperatures in the H2Bioil process helps in improving the overall C4+ hydrocarbon yields. For improving the overall carbon efficiency from the experimental proof-of-concept of the H2Bioil process, synergistic process integrations, involving gasification, combustion and reforming, have been suggested within the group for utilizing carbon from CO, char and C1-C3 hydrocarbons to increase the yield of liquid fuel range (C4+) hydrocarbons.

As such, these macromolecules offer the promise of providing tailor-made, low-cost materials solutions to some of the most pressing engineering challenges of the day. Here, we will discuss two distinct classes of functional macromolecules with tailored chemistries for implementation into separations and energy conversion applications. In the first of these efforts, we describe the synthesis, molecular characterization, and the solid-state electronic device application of an emerging class of transparent conducting macromolecules, radical polymers. Radical polymers are macromolecular materials that have flexible polymeric backbones and pendant groups that bear stable radical moieties. In contrast to almost all other semiconducting polymers, radical polymers lack backbone conjugation and are completely amorphous in the solid state. Despite this shift in macromolecular design archetype, we demonstrate that the solid-state electrical conductivity and charge carrier mobility values of a glassy model radical polymer are on par with the conductivity and mobility values of oft-used conjugated, semicrystalline polymer semiconductors [e.g., poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT)]. Furthermore, upon proper tuning of the chemical functionality of the polymer chains, these radical polymers perform well as an electrode modifying layers in thin film organic photovoltaic (OPV) devices and increase the power conversion efficiencies of these OPV devices greatly. In the second of these efforts, A-B-C triblock polymers are generated using controlled radical polymerization techniques. By tuning the molecular weight, molecular weight distribution, block polymer chemical composition, and casting techniques employed, we are able to generate mechanically-robust nanoporous thin films that are well-suited for nanofiltration applications. In fact, high-flux separations (i.e., at permeabilities equal to or greater than current commercial membranes) of particles down to ~1 nm in radii are presented, which is the smallest separation performed using a block polymer template to date. Additionally, we demonstrate that, through the appropriate selection of the C-block of the triblock polymer, the chemistry of the nanopore walls can be tuned to any number of functional groups. Therefore, these tailored macromolecules provide an excellent handle by which to generate size-selective and chemically-selective separations devices. Bio: Bryan W. Dear Colleagues, As you are aware, Chris Murray has served as Assistant to the Head in our School since September 2005. Over time, her position has evolved and she is now responsible for an enlarged set of duties, which she is handling exceptionally well. In light of her new duties, her position was recently reclassified. Thus, effective July 1 , 2014, her new position title is Academic Administrator for our School. In addition to her continuing duties, which include supervising all the academic support clerical staff, Chris now has the following new responsibilities. * Serve as a member of the faculty recruiting committee and manage the faculty search process, including the online application and candidate visits, and communications with the CoE Office of Academic Affairs. * Manage the faculty promotion process, working closely with the School's Primary Committee (PC) and faculty members to collect PT documents, letters of support and meeting College and School deadlines. Attend PC meetings and manage the PC feedback process on behalf of the School Head. * Serve as a member of the faculty awards committee and manage the faculty award process and procedures.
