Updates to the ChE Safety Website

Hello Everyone, The information under the "Workplace Injury Information" section on the ChE Safety page (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/AboutUs/Safety.html ) was updated to include: * instructions on what to do in case of an incident ("What to do if it happens to you?) * Incidents and near misses need to be reported. Should an incident or near miss happen in your work area, please complete the Safety Incident/Near Miss Report form (posted on our website and attached to this email) and send me a copy. The attached form is a template, you can use it when reporting incidents and near misses internally. * If you need to seek medical attention after an incident, the First Report of Injury (FROI) form needs to be completed and sent to REM (and me, please) via email. The FROI form needs to be completed by the PI. All the links under this section were updated and will take you to the relevant information. The document under Safety Update #19 was also updated to include recommendations on checking carts for mechanical integrity before using them for transporting gas cylinders or liquid nitrogen tanks. A big "Thank You!" to the ChESS leaders who helped in compiling the information in the first document ("What to do if it happens to you?"). Thank you for your commitment to safety! Purdue University SCHOOL OF CHEMICAL ENGINEERING GRADUATE SEMINAR SERIES Prof. Talid Sinno Department of Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering University of Pennsylvania "Using Energy Landscapes to Study Microstructure in Crystalline Materials" October 7, 2014 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 10:15-10:45 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: The notions of potential energy landscapes and inherent structures are in routine use in the thermodynamic and kinetic analysis of glasses and supercooled liquids but, to date, have been only sparsely applied in the context of defect and microstructure thermodynamics in crystalline materials. Using crystalline silicon as a backdrop, the aim of this talk is to apply these concepts to study the high-temperature thermodynamics and structural characteristics of crystalline imperfections. It is shown that (configurational and vibrational) entropy plays an important role in setting the behavior of defects, sometimes in a surprising fashion. Connections to melting phenomena of crystalline materials will also be discussed Bio: Talid Sinno is Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at the University of Pennsylvania. He also holds a secondary appointment in the Department of Mechanical Engineering and Applied Science. He received his PhD in Chemical Engineering from MIT in 1998 and joined the faculty at Penn in 1999. His laboratory develops and uses a wide variety of computer simulation techniques to study aggregation and clustering phenomena in range of systems that include atomic semiconductor and metallic materials, colloidal assemblies, and blood flow.

Sreeram is Corporate Vice President of Research & Development for The Dow Chemical Company. Prior to assuming this role, he served as Vice President of R&D for Dow Advanced Materials. Sreeram originally joined Dow in June 2006 as Vice President of Core R&D. Prior to joining Dow, he served as the Global Technology Director and Chief Technology Officer for DuPont Electronic Technologies. Prior to this, he served as Vice President of Worldwide Technology for Cookson Electronics, and before that he led the Electronic and Flat Display Program for Sarnoff Corporation. Sreeram, who holds more than 20 U.S.-issued patents, earned his doctorate degree in 1995 from the Department of Materials Science & Engineering at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), and his master's degree in Glass Science from Alfred University in New York. He is also a graduate of the ceramics engineering program from the Indian Institute of Technology - BHU in Varanasi, India.
