Heating & Air Flow

Be Advised - Today , tomorrow, and Thursday technicians will be shutting down the air handlers on the old side of the building to perform routine maintenance on them. The units will be off for approximately 30 minutes or so as they do the work. You should not feel any difference in temperature during this time but might notice that it will be quieter and there will be no air movement. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thank you. Storage of Strong acids

ChE Faculty, Staff and Graduate Students, As you know OSHA did inspection of our Department and we performed well and showed good results of Safety culture in our labs, offices and auditoriums. Safety Committee provided audit of several labs on December 6-th addressing OSHA issues. It came to our attention that one aspect of chemicals storage needs to be reviewed and adequate measures have to be taken to comply with OSHA and Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan. We want to remind to segregate storage of Strong acids. Strong Acids: e.g. hydrochloric, sulfuric, nitric, perchloric, phosphoric Must be stored separate from weak acids (acetic and formic are combustible) or flammable solvents. Mixing either of these with Strong acids will produce heat and may result in a fire or explosion. Special cases: * nitric acid - is also a strong oxidizer (see below). * perchloric acid: is a very strong oxidizer when heated and can be dangerous; should always be held in a secondary container (e.g. a plastic tub). * chloric acid: is also a very strong oxidizer. Such strong oxidizers must not be stored near any compounds that can be oxidized (like acetic acid or any flammable solvents/solids). Dear Colleagues, Dr. Andrea Kasinski (Yale University) is our first Biology faculty candidate for an Epigenetics and Cancer Biology search. Andrea's research is focused on exploring the use of miRNAs to dissect tumor initiating pathways and as potential therapeutics in treating disease. Planned gift to endow chemical engineering professorship

Dear All, Pl read the news story in today's Purdue Today, about a Distinguished Professorship planned gift that Larry (BS, ChE '59) and Virginia Faith (BS, PSYC '60) have created recently: http://www.purdue.edu/newsroom/purduetoday/releases/2012/Q4/planned-gift-to… . In recognition of their gift, on October 5 the Faiths received a Pinnacle Award at the President's Council pre-game event from acting President Tim Sands and Lisa Calvert, vice president for development. This is another success of our Development efforts - Diane Klassen and I discussed this idea with the Faiths first during our visit to Houston in April this year for a School alumni reception.
