Gatewood Wing of the Mechanical Engineering Building, Purdue's first LEED-certified facility; a video chat with Purdue Solar Decathlon INhome Team members, who are in Washington, D.C., to compete in an international competition sponsored by the Department of Energy; an alternative transportation expo; a Wabash River cleanup; and an unwanted medicine drop-off. "During Green Week, Purdue celebrates its success in achieving increased sustainability on campus and in our community," said Michael Gulich, the university's director of sustainability. "But we also encourage and equip everyone to do more." Begley, famous for decades for biking throughout car-dependent Los Angeles, will encourage his audience with the theme "Live Simply So Others Can Simply Live." The Discovery Lecture Series event is at 7:30 p.m. Monday (Sept. 26) in Fowler Hall. Begley will hold a book signing from 4-5 p.m. in Stewart Center's Fowler Atrium. Discovery Park also is sponsoring the China-U.S. 2011 Joint Symposium on Sept. 25-28. The EcoPartnership China-U.S. Joint Research Center for Ecosystem and Environmental Change will examine the prospects and challenges of growing the biology-based economy. The meeting annually brings together top Chinese and American researchers from six research institutions in the areas of biofuels and alternative energy, environmental impacts, and climate. Purdue Memorial Union perks the week up by offering free coffee all day on Tuesday (Sept. 27) for those bringing reusable mugs (16 ounce or less) to Urban Markey, Pappy's, Flatbreads or Oasis. The Alternative Transportation Expo moves this year to Memorial Mall and Stadium Mall for a vehicle show from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Wednesday (Sept. 28). The expo will include an airplane that runs on biofuel; a Navistar eStar, an all-electric delivery vehicle manufactured in Wakarusa, Ind.; and Smart Car test drives by Smart Center of Indianapolis. Purdue exhibitors will include the Purdue Solar Racing Team, two student-built electric motorcycles and a student-built electric Porsche 924. The Purdue Cycling Club will offer free bicycle tune-ups during the event. The first 50 volunteers who sign up online will get to help clean up the banks of the Wabash River beginning at 3 p.m. Thursday (Sept. 29). Volunteers will receive gloves and bags. The 12,000 students living in residence halls will celebrate Water Day with The Power Shower Challenge, an effort to minimizing water usage by keeping their showers to less than three minutes. Green Week concludes Friday (Sept. 30) with a Sustainable World Expo from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Green-focused businesses, clubs and organizations will have booths along Stadium Mall to showcase what they do. FR: Campus Emergency Preparedness and Planning Office DA: Monday, September 19, 2011 RE: Purdue ALERT Test to include All Hazards Outdoor Siren Activation - Thursday, September 22 at 10:00 AM Purdue University will conduct its semiannual test of the University's emergency warning notification system, Purdue ALERT on September 22. The Purdue Alert test begins at 10 a.m. and will be used to ensure that the various layers of the system are working properly and to simulate a live situation for practice. All Purdue ALERT layers will be activated to include: * The All Hazards Outdoor Emergency Warning Sirens * An email alert * A text message...only those individuals that have signed up for the text message alerts will receive the text. * The Purdue home page and Facebook emergency notification group pages will be posted with information about the test. * Boiler TV Emergency Alert System will broadcast a test message. The text message will read: "This is the semi-annual TEST of the Purdue emergency warning notification system. In a real emergency, check http://www.purdue.edu for updates." This is only a test, and no action is necessary. If there is inclement weather, the siren test will be canceled. The test is part of the University's emphasis on preparedness and coincides with the Department of Homeland Security's National Preparedness Month. Purdue University's Campus Emergency Preparedness Office is hosting a Safety and Preparedness day on the Purdue Memorial Mall on Thursday, September 22 from 10 AM to 2 PM to promote safety awareness. Purdue police, fire, emergency preparedness and several other department officials as well as local community partners will have static displays and informational booths promoting safety and preparedness. We encourage everyone to stop by the mall. The campus community should also take a few moments to review emergency procedures and prepare for emergencies. At a minimum, everyone should do the following: 1. Review the Emergency Procedures Guide that provides "how to respond" information for natural and human-caused incidents. 2. Review their Building Emergency Plan to ensure they know evacuation routes and shelter in place locations. 3. Review the Purdue Alert procedures...how one will be notified of emergencies. 4. Develop an individual plan. The opportunity of gaining a new instrument was brought to my attention and would like to ask for verbal support from other labs. The instrument is a high resolution micro computed tomography system, specifically the model we are looking at is SkyScan 1172, http://www.skyscan.be/products/1172.htm, which has the resolution of <0.8 um, this instrument is not only attractive for biomedical but also for pharmaceutical, agricultural, material science, electronics, etc. The instrument will be bought by Bindley Bioscience Center and costs close to $300,000. From you, there is no money needed just a letter of support that states you have use for this equipment in your lab group and would use it if the equipment becomes available on campus. This will not only enhance your research capabilities but it is a great way to bring forth collaborations between disciplines and increase communication across campus. Three subquestions related to this are: i) what are the requirements for a tethered functional group (A) to interact with another functional group (B) in its immediate surroundings on the surface, in order to facilitate cooperative heterogeneous catalysis, (ii) can the isolation of a grafted metal cation and its surrounding environment be programmed for catalysis using an organic ligand, and (iii) can metal cluster active sites be made stable and accessible simultaneously, while providing for the possibility of electronic tuning, with the use of an organic ligand? The latter subquestion is inspired by enzymes consisting of metal clusters at the active site. Results within area (i) are discussed by understanding the role of organically-modified surface in heterogeneous aminocatalysis, and applying these results for the hydrolysis of linkages relevant to the depolymerization of cellulose, the main component of biomass. In area (ii), grafted Al(III) calixarenes are used as oxo ligands for Al(III) grafted sites. The calixarene scaffold enforces site isolation as shown via 27Al MAS solid-state NMR spectroscopy, and control of steric and electronic effects surrounding the active on a highly refined level. This approach has led to the design and synthesis of the most enantioselective catalyst reported for MPV reaction, using an Al(III)-calixarene active site. A heterogeneous variant of the calixarene-containing MPV catalyst provides valuable information into the open/closed connectivity requirements for heterogeneous catalysis, and this is demonstrated with new mechanistic information in related heterogeneous olefin epoxidation catalysis using organic hydroperoxides as oxidant. Finally, in area (iii), organically-modified metal clusters are used because the organic portion of these materials makes the electronic structure of the metal near the surface readily tunable via synthesis, and useful as a building block for heterogeneous catalysis. When using calixarenes as surface ligands for metal clusters, this passivation decreases the ubiquitous tendency of metal clusters to aggregate during catalysis, and enables programming of the electronic and steric environment on the metal surface. Corroborative data for programming electronic environment on the metal surface via ligand effects is provided by FTIR Spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and single-crystal X-ray diffraction in comparative studies of iridum and gold clusters bound with calixarene phosphine ligands. It is at that time that he first became inspired by chemical engineering on the molecular level and controlling properties of functional materials via synthesis. He was awarded a Fannie and John Hertz Foundation Fellowship for doctoral studies in catalyst synthesis with Prof. Mark Davis at California Institute of Technology in 1994, and later, in 1998, undertook postdoctoral studies in supramolecular chemistry at Institut Le Bel in Strasbourg, France, with Prof. Wais Hosseini, as a NSF International Awards Postdoctoral Fellow. It is there that Alex learned about calixarene macrocycles and their synthesis. Alex began a multidisciplinary research program as Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at UC Berkeley in 2000, and has been promoted to Associate Professor. He was a Technion-Fulbright Fellow visiting professor at the Wolfson Department of Chemical Engineering in Haifa, Israel in 2008-2009. His current research interests are focused on understanding catalysis by using comparative structure-function relations and synthesis as a tool. Much of his efforts are geared at defining new paradigms of synthesizing hybrid organic-inorganic interfaces, and applying them to gain new insight into binding and catalysis involving surfaces. He is on the editorial board of Chemistry of Materials, and received a Young Scientist Prize from IACS in 2004 for his contribution of grafted calixarenes as hybrid organic-inorganic scaffolds for catalytic structures.
