"RiNCE: A Particle Image Velocimetry Approach for Nanoparticle Characterization" Abstract: Nanoparticle characterization plays a crucial role in understanding material properties and their possible modifications. Traditional techniques like dynamic light scattering, small-angle X-ray scattering, and fluorescence correlation microscopy are commonly employed to measure properties such as size and diffusion coefficient. However, these methods have limitations in resolution and sensitivity to experimental conditions. In this study, we propose a modified particle image velocimetry (PIV) approach called image-based probability estimation of displacement (iPED) for more accurate and repeatable measurements. iPED demonstrates enhanced accuracy and robustness in estimating the diffusion coefficients of nanoparticles ranging from 200 nm to 1000 nm, without assumptions on particle behavior and shape. Nonetheless, iPED faces limitations when characterizing nanoparticles below 200 nm due to low signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). To address this, we introduce a revised algorithm incorporating robust phase correlation to improve SNR and reduce error in the diffusion coefficient measurements. Monte Carlo analyses reveal a strong statistical correlation between the diffusion coefficient values and various phase plane properties across different SNR levels of synthetic images. These results indicate promising potential for enhancing accuracy and robustness in iPED measurements, which can be extended to other characterization parameters beyond diffusion coefficient. Further investigations are warranted to explore the full capabilities of this improved approach. Maximum aortic root diameters measured from parasternal long axis (PSLAX) images help classify the severity of aortic root dilation relative to healthy controls, informing pharmacological and/or surgical treatment strategies. However, aortic diameter remains an incomplete characterization of disease status and even small errors in diameter measurements can influence clinical care decisions [2]. Here, we present a novel feature-tracking algorithm that utilizes goodness-of-fit weighting to automatically stabilize PSLAX images, quantify aortic root size, and estimate parameters previously unattainable via standard clinical methods. When compared to standard of care techniques, the algorithm-derived aortic root diameters were highly correlated (r2> 0.96) to measurements made by a board-certified cardiologist. The algorithm stabilized aortic root translation and tracked anterior and posterior surfaces of the aortic root, which allowed for estimation of aortic root behavior between systole and diastole in Marfan Syndrome patients and control patients with no cardiac disease. This novel approach provides a holistic definition of aortic geometry and paves the way for more comprehensively describing aortic root properties. We anticipate that expansion of this algorithm to include additional biomechanical analyses and its application in a larger cohorts of patients will bolster our understanding of vessel wall dynamics and the pathologies underlying pediatric aortopathy. Juan Mesa (Hugh Lee, Advisor) will present "A Wearable Device Towards Automatic Detection and Treatment of Opioid Overdose." Abstract: Opioid-induced overdose is one of the leading causes of death among the US population under the age of 50. In 2018, the death rate among opioid users rose to 48,602, followed by a devastating increase to 100,000 in 2021. Prescriptive analgesics for severe pain management (e.g., codeine, fentanyl) and heroin are the most common opioids related to overdose mortality. The overdose process can be reversed by the administration of naloxone, an opioid antagonist that rapidly counteracts the effects of opioid-induced respiratory depression. Over the past years, the concept of a closed-loop opioid overdose detection and naloxone delivery system has emerged as a potential engineering solution to mitigate the devastating effects of the opioid pandemic. Herein, we present our ongoing work in the development of novel implantable and electronic technologies to address the opioid pandemic effects, focusing on a wrist-worn wearable device. Our system is a closed-loop emergency drug delivery system, consisting of (i) a Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS) sensor for detecting opioid-induced cardiorespiratory depression, (ii) a MOSFET switch, and (iii) a Zero-Voltage Switching (ZVS) modified electromagnetic field generator. Using artery brachial occlusion experiments involving human subjects (n = 8), we were able to consistently demonstrate low oxygenation events. Additionally, our device exhibited the ability to release the drug within 10 seconds of detecting a low oxygen event. We observed significant differences in the peak values of oxyhemoglobin and deoxyhemoglobin before and after the low-oxygenation events (p < 0.050). Dear Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering, I would like to inform you that Tamara Kinzer-Ursem, Associate Professor and Associate Head of Academic Programs will be taking a new role in the College of Engineering as Associate Dean of Graduate and Professional Education on July 01, 2023. Associate Professor Vitaliy Rayz will assume the role of Associate Head for Academic Programs in the Weldon School on July 01, 2023. Tami's strategic vision was crucial for developing the roadmap for BME undergraduate curriculum redesign focused on increasing the competencies of our students and for the redesign of our PhD milestones focused on increasing student mentorship and scholarship. Although we will miss Tami's leadership of our broad set of programs, this change will provide her opportunity to apply her talents to strategic growth and support of graduate and professional programs across the College. Vitaliy is uniquely suited and well-prepared to assume this new leadership role and build upon the growth and programmatic strengths that have been founded here in the Weldon School. Over the past two years he has excelled as Director of Undergraduate Programs and Chair of our Undergraduate Committee in developing with faculty and staff members a shared, school-wide vision for updates to our undergraduate curriculum based on implementation of the depth-areas curriculum. Vitaliy has shown strategic leadership qualities required to navigate the upcoming merger with the BME department at IUPUI and build a fully integrated extension of the Weldon School of BME in Indianapolis. Vitaliy has shown dedication to research and teaching excellence required to take our education programs, both undergraduate and graduate, to new heights of distinction. Part Time Position Available in Data Processing

Good Morning, There is a part time positions available (about 20 hours a week) that would be a great fit for a BME students on a meat quality certification project using a field mass spectrometry system that is funded by the Purdue Trask Innovation Fund. This is an internal position so it is ideal for PMP students looking to supplement their income while studying but could also be beneficial to a thesis MS students who need funding as well. If you are interested in this role as a Phd or MS thesis student, please verify with your faculty advisor before pursuing this opportunity. We are looking for a motivated grad student to dedicate 20h per week to support a project for real-time data processing and reporting in an effort to translate a laboratory method of mass spectrometry into a field-compatible analysis. The method is focused on monitoring lipid biomarkers present in beef that are related to diverse aspects of its quality. The ideal candidate will know python, C#, and basic statistics. A willingness to work on the interface of instruments and software is a plus. The desired start date is August 2023, but an earlier start date is also possible.
