However, their real-world adoption remains limited by insufficient durability across mechanical, electrical, environmental, and thermal aspects. These limitations often result in material failures such as fracture, freezing, dehydration, and thermal instability. To address these challenges, I have engineered materials at multiple scales such as micro-, nano-, molecular-levels, by establishing novel "process-structure-property" relationships that enable extreme performances. In this presentation, I will introduce the design principles of these durable materials. However, previously reported methods of norbornene conjugation to natural and synthetic polymers require long reaction times and usage of large quantity of organic solvents. Improving norbornene conjugation efficiency could allow greater adoption of this chemistry for hydrogel synthesis. To this end, microwave-assisted synthesis can accelerate reactions while maintaining consistency. The current microwave-assisted methods for synthesizing macromers for hydrogel crosslinking are limited and this work demonstrates the adaptation of norbornene conjugation methods to a microwave reactor for rapid synthesis of highly substituted macromers. Conjugation of norbornene to multi-arm poly(ethylene glycol)-amine using microwave methods reduced reaction time from 48 hours to 90 minutes while improving the conversion from 83.1% to 98.3%. Macromers with higher conversion produced hydrogels with increased elastic moduli (G'). On the other hand, microwave-assisted synthesis of gelatin norbornene (μwGelNB) provided a robust and efficient synthesis route, where norbornene substitution was controlled from ~60-90% by adjusting reaction time between 7.5 and 45 minutes. Longer microwave heating rendered the gelatin less viscous while increased functionalization, allowing hydrogel fabrication with higher G' than conventionally synthesized material. Additionally, μwGelNB was used to fabricate small positive and negative architectures using a digital light processing (DLP) bioprinter. Dear Weldon BME Community, I write today to share a leadership transition within our school that reflects both gratitude for past service and enthusiasm for our future. First, I want to thank Dr. Young Kim one more time for serving as the Associate Head for Research from 2022 to 2024. His leadership during this period was especially important, as it coincided with significant administrative transitions and interim leadership at the school. Navigating these challenges required steadiness, thoughtful decision-making, and a deep commitment to supporting our research community. Dr. Kim provided just that-offering critical service at a pivotal time and helping to maintain momentum across our research programs. I want to sincerely thank him for his dedication to the Weldon School, and I hope you will join me in extending your personal appreciation as well. Looking ahead, I am pleased to announce that Dr. Jacqueline Linnes has agreed to take on the role of Associate Head for Research. In this position, she will report directly to me and work closely with the BME Cabinet, College leadership, and our partners in Indianapolis to advance the research mission of the Weldon School. Her responsibilities will include championing research excellence, mentoring faculty, enabling collaborative team science, and overseeing research infrastructure and policy. These signals affect blood flow, brain fluid movement, and waste clearance. Accurate cerebral vessel segmentation could facilitate fluid dynamics research in fMRI. However, most methods that find blood vessels use structural MRI. These methods often do not work well in fMRI because of misalignment caused by fMRI distortion. Also, most fMRI scans use a slow sampling rate (TR > 0.8 s). This slow rate causes the heartbeat signal to mix with lower frequencies. To address the challenge in vessel detection, large cerebral arteries and the superior sagittal sinus (SSS) are directly identified in fMRI space by robustly leveraging these vessels' distinct pulsatile signal patterns during the cardiac cycle. This method validated accuracy in a local dataset with ground truth vessel segmentation and demonstrated high reproducibility with the Human Connectome Project-Aging dataset on 422 participants with repeated scans. After finding these regions, a novel region-specific hypersampling method was developed to resolve the physiological signals. This method uses fast cross-slice sampling within each TR to hypersample the fMRI signal which selectively enhances the effective temporal resolution of fMRI signals within coherently pulsating neurofluid and tissue. This approach was applied to the publicly available HCP-A dataset (ages 36-90), increasing the resolvable frequency which enables clear separation among the cardiac, respiration, and LFO oscillations. Cardiomyopathy remains the leading cause of death in DMD. Duchenne-associated cardiomyopathy is treated following traditional heart failure strategies due to a lack of disease-specific therapies. To further explore DMD-specific treatments of cardiomyopathy, we first employed a pharmacologic stress-induced murine model of DMD using mdx mice. We describe a simple and effective method to enhance the cardiac phenotype in a pharmacologic stress-induced mdx model using advanced 2D and 4D high-frequency ultrasound to monitor cardiac dysfunction progression in vivo. Moreover, we assessed left ventricular function in the mdx model of DMD when treated with a sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor using the same 2D and 4D high-frequency ultrasound technique. Furthermore, we assessed left ventricular function in the mdx model with 2D high-resolution ultrasound when treated with a positive allosteric modulator of the SERCA pump.
