See attached
We are excited to share that the DiabDocs<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fmed.stanf…> program is now soliciting a fourth cycle of letters of intent for applications for our mentored career development program from early career physician scientists engaged in research relevant to diabetes and within the scope of NIDDK including basic, translational, clinical, epidemiology/biostatistical, informatics, health services or health policy projects. Most funded scholars will focus on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research, and limited slots are available for persons working in type 2 diabetes (T2D).
The letters of intent (LOIs) are due on Tuesday, November 12, 2024, at 5pm (ET) via the REDCap form: https://redcap.link/x7upmzv7<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fredcap.li…>
After reviewing the LOIs, individuals will be invited to submit full applications by Monday, January 13, 2025, at 5pm (ET) and an in-person program retreat in Baltimore, MD between March 5-6, 2025, that will include interviews. Award funding will begin on July 1, 2025. Please feel free to distribute the LOI Announcement to your contacts and let us know where you have disseminated the information.
In addition, please find attached the eligibility criteria for program scholars for your review and records. The verbiage comes from the NIH funding opportunity announcement (FOA) statement.
Resubmission Guidelines:
- For applicants resubmitting their proposal, a LOI must be received by November 12, 2024, to show interest in the program.
- LOI must include: 1) the original AIMS/Research Plan pages from the original full application and 2) a revised AIMS/Research Plan page demonstrating how the applicant intends to improve the proposal.
- In addition, if invited to submit a full application, applicants must submit a 1-page response to the comments/feedback received from the study section in the previous recruitment cycle. The 1-page response would be required at the full application stage and not the LOI stage.

["Roles of regulatory variants and alternative splicing in complex diseases" Yunlong Liu, PhD Professor of Medical and Molecular Genetics, Biostatistics and Health Data Sciences, and BioHealth Informatics, Indiana University School of Medicine]
[Bio: Dr. Yunlong Liu is the T.K. Li Chair for Medical Research and Chancellor's Professor in the Department of Medical and Molecular Genetics at Indiana University School of Medicine. He directs the Center for Computational Biology and Bioinformatics, a research center with 30 full time principal investigators, and the Center for Medical Genomics, a core facility for next-generation sequencing, single-cell analytics and spatial omics. Dr. Liu has extensive experience in computational modeling in gene regulation, with the focus on splicing regulation, on multiple disease systems including cancer and neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's disease and addiction. ~BME HOST: Nan Kong~ ~ BME Host: -name of host- ~][Abstract: A growing number of genetic variants associated with complex traits have been identified by Genome-Wide Association Studies (GWAS). In this talk, I will introduce several projects aimed at pinpointing the genes and molecular features responsible for certain traits. We do this by integrating GWAS findings with both functional and computational genomics analysis, such as Massively Parallel Reporter Assays (MPRA), analysis of RNA sequencing data from both single cells and mixed cell populations, CRISPR-based gene editing experiments, and machine learning approaches.]

"Imaging Surrogates of Bone Quality and Fracture Resistance"
Christopher Newman
Assistant Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences
Abstract: The primary method for diagnosing bone disease is the measurement of bone mineral density using dual energy x-ray absorptiometry. Though this is largely effective for predicting fractures in patients with osteoporosis, bone mineral density is less effective at predicting fractures in other metabolic bone diseases. Therefore, multiple efforts have been made to develop tools by which fracture risk can be more effectively assessed in these populations. In addition to his prior work examining bone quality in preclinical models of disease, Dr. Newman is interested in utilizing non-invasive imaging techniques to function as surrogates for evaluating bone quality and ultimately predicting fractures in these patients.
Bio: Christopher Newman, MD, PhD, is an Assistant Professor of Radiology and Imaging Sciences at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he also serves as a clinical pediatric radiologist in the Division of Pediatric Radiology at the Riley Hospital for Children. He completed his PhD in Anatomy and Cell Biology under Matthew Allen, PhD at the Indiana University School of Medicine, where he also completed his medical training. He then completed his Diagnostic Radiology residency in the Department of Radiology and Imaging Sciences and his Pediatric Radiology fellowship at the Riley Hospital for Children. His clinical interests include multimodality pediatric imaging, pediatric musculoskeletal imaging, and pediatric ultrasound. His research interests include the use of imaging to assess bone quality and fracture resistance. His efforts also include refining imaging techniques to understand the mechanical mechanisms of child abuse fractures and better identify these injuries in patients. He has received training grants and early career investigator awards from the Indiana CTSI, the NIH, and the Radiological Society of North America. He is also a member of the Council of Early Career Investigators in Imagining.

Title: Investigating the role of the gut microbiome in modulating musculoskeletal health
Date: 9/5/2024
Time: 1:00 PM
Location: MJIS 2001 and Zoom - https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/91920279987<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdue-ed…>
Committee members: Dr. Deva Chan (Chair), Dr. Douglas Brubaker, Dr. Tzu-Wen Cross, and Dr. Leopold Green
Abstract: Due to lifestyle and dietary factors, a disrupted gut microbiome is becoming more prominent. At the same time, the incidence of aging and inflammation-associated musculoskeletal diseases, including osteoarthritis, is rising. These concomitant rises may be linked through actions of the gut microbiome. The gut microbiome alters systemic inflammation, intestinal permeability, and nutrient metabolism. Each of these processes can be associated with musculoskeletal development and the underlying structure-function relationship in bone and synovial connective tissues. Beyond these indirect relationships, other work has shown that modulation of the gut microbiome in rodents through high-fat diets or antibiotic use leads to an altered propensity for osteoarthritis and bone material properties, respectively. While a wealth of evidence suggests that the gut microbiome alters the musculoskeletal system, how it modulates the connective tissue in joints and underlying subchondral bone remains poorly understood, hindering our ability to diagnose, treat, and prevent musculoskeletal disease. We examine alterations to the structure-function relationship in musculoskeletal tissue through a combination of imaging biomechanics. Additionally, we profile the gut microbiome through 16S taxonomic profiling. These results will seek to identify (1) how specific divergent gut microbiome profiles result in different musculoskeletal parameters, (2) the time course of those changes, and (3) if gut-driven alterations to musculoskeletal health can be restored through exercise, prebiotic use, or a combination of both interventions. This work seeks to enhance our understanding of the interrelatedness between the gut and the musculoskeletal system to enable improved treatment, both adjuvant and preventative, of musculoskeletal disease and injury.

Update on CityBus semester passes for on and off-campus routes
Dear Purdue Students,
Purdue has signed a contract to pay a transportation vendor, CityBus, so that your on-campus bus routes will remain free.
In addition, after CityBus decided to charge riders $99/semester for a pass for off-campus routes this year, Purdue has chosen to subsidize off-campus rides for students. For 2024-25, the university will subsidize the full amount.
This new subsidy can be carried out in several ways, e.g., each student rider pays CityBus and then receives a check from the university, or the university pays CityBus for the student riders. For 2024-25, we will take the latter approach.
A semester pass will need to be obtained through CityBus to access off-campus routes, and more information on how to obtain the pass will be forthcoming. On-campus routes can be accessed by showing a Purdue ID and do not require a pass.
Data will be gathered on ridership through this year as Purdue works toward a better long-term solution and future vendor contracts for transportation for on and off-campus students.
Sincerely,
Office of the Provost and Office of Administrative Operations

OWL Intensive Writing Experience for Dissertation Writers
For PhD students writing a dissertation
The purpose of the Intensive Writing Experience (IWE) is to give PhD students in good standing with their programs time to write or to revise their doctoral dissertation with support from Purdue OWL staff. Those who attended a summer IWE are allowed to apply, but preference will be given to those who have not yet attended.
Participants will receive writing instruction and support from OWL staff, will spend significant time writing or revising their dissertation, and will network with other dissertation writers on campus.
The IWE program for fall is a four-part event, and participants are expected to attend all four sessions.
Fall 2024:
Day/Time: Tuesdays from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm (ET)
Dates: Sept 3, 10, 17, & 24
Format: In person, Krach Leadership Center
PhD students currently working on a dissertation (writing or revising) should apply between August 21-28, 2024. Complete the application survey here.<https://nam04.safelinks.protection.outlook.com/?url=https%3A%2F%2Fpurdue.ca…> For more information, see the introductory material in the application survey or email Writing.Lab(a)purdue.edu<mailto:Writing.Lab@purdue.edu> and include IWE in the subject line.

New Thesis Format Review Requirement for Fall 2024 Doctoral and Thesis-option Masters Graduation Candidates
The Office of Graduate Records has been handling an increasing number of thesis or dissertation deposits that are submitted on the deadline but contain format issues which prevent approval and publication. Addressing these issues at the last-minute causes significant stress to students trying to graduate, and also to the faculty and staff working to approve and publish these thesis and dissertation documents.
To help students better prepare for this final deposit deadline, all students planning to graduate this Fall 2024 with a doctoral or thesis-option master's degree will be asked to submit their dissertation or thesis file for a format consultation by November 20, 2024. Most thesis/dissertation files can be submitted for asynchronous review as an email attachment to thesishelp(a)purdue.edu<mailto:thesishelp@purdue.edu> or sent via FileLocker to Carla Coffey (cmcoffey(a)purdue.edu<mailto:cmcoffey@purdue.edu>). Students working with export-controlled content, however, will need to schedule an in-person format review rather than send files electronically. In-person consultations can be requested via email to thesishelp(a)purdue.edu<mailto:thesishelp@purdue.edu>.
This review is just to help make sure that the thesis or dissertation is in the correct format prior to the defense and for future publication. Content changes can still be made to this document at the student and department's discretion up until the final thesis submission deadline for fall, which is December 4, 2024. Students who are in departments which have their own designated format reviewer can opt out of this central format review requirement.
As a reminder, Purdue templates are available for students to use on the Thesis and Dissertation Webpage<https://www.purdue.edu/academics/ogsps/research/thesis/templates.html>.
