Overview: LSRF supports exceptional postdoctoral research in all areas of basic life sciences discovery. The award provides three years of support to a named postdoctoral researcher at a non-profit university or research institution. The award is paid to the university or research institution where the researcher is carrying out their project and is solely for the benefit of the named researcher. The broad categories covering life sciences include: Biochemistry, Cancer Biology, Cell Biology, Computational Biology, Developmental Biology, Immunology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, Neurobiology, Organismal Population & Evolutionary Biology, Physiology, Plant Biology, Structural Biology, and Virology.

Abstract:
Cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiac imaging is an increasingly utilized tool to help with early identification and treatment of disease, however as imaging techniques advance in complexity and application, there is a greater need for accessibility and feasibility for clinical and research use. For example, 3D and 4D imaging methods arguably provide a greater morphological and quantitative assessment of cardiac fitness, however these methods also introduce complexity to analysis and interpretation of results. Deep learning for biomedical image segmentation and classification is a promising method that could potentially be used to automate analysis and reduce complexity but requires an informed approach to do so. This proposal builds on previously developed strengths in our lab in using 4D ultrasound to evaluate mouse models of cardiac disease and 4D cardiac magnetic resonance imaging in the characterization of Duchenne muscular dystrophy-associated cardiomyopathy. Using these frameworks, we plan to simplify, improve, and automate 4D cardiac image analysis in both experimental and clinical cardiac image datasets. We hypothesize that these improvements will decrease analysis time of 4D image datasets by more than 90% and that automated image analysis will achieve >95% accuracy for both image segmentation and classification. Achieving these goals will address a growing need in cardiac imaging to provide accessible techniques and technologies to researchers and healthcare providers with the goal of improving cardiac outcomes for patients worldwide.

Title: Precision of Positional Information Along the Developing Cochlea Radial Axis: Linear BMP Activity Helps Set the Stage

Abstract:
Positional information encoded in signaling molecules is essential for early patterning in the prosensory domain of the developing cochlea. The cochlea contains an exquisite repeating pattern of sensory hair cells and supporting cells, and this requires precision in the morphogen signals that set the initial radial compartment boundaries, but this has not been investigated. To measure gradient formation and morphogenetic precision in developing cochlea, we developed a quantitative image analysis procedure measuring SOX2 and pSMAD1/5/9 profiles in mouse embryos at E12.5, E13.5, and E14.5. Intriguingly, we found that pSMAD1/5/9 profile forms a linear gradient in the medial ~75% of the PSD during embryonic day (E)12.5 and E13.5. This is a surprising readout of activity for a diffusive BMP4 ligand secreted from a tightly constrained lateral region, since morphogens typically form exponential or power-law gradient shapes. This is meaningful for gradient interpretation because while linear profiles offer the theoretically highest information content and distributed precision for patterning, a linear morphogen gradient has not yet been observed. In addition to the information-optimized linear profile, we found that while pSMAD1/5/9 is stable during this timeframe an accompanying gradient of SOX2 shifts dynamically. Third, we see through joint decoding maps of pSMAD1/5/9 and SOX2 that there is a high-fidelity mapping between signaling activity and position in the regions soon to become Kölliker's organ and the organ of Corti where radial patterns are more intricate. Mapping is ambiguous in the prosensory domain precursory to the outer sulcus, where cell fates are uniform. Altogether, this research provides new insights into the precision of early morphogenetic patterning cues in the radial cochlea prosensory domain.

HEADS NOTE
We made it through our first week of the fall semester and capped it off with a great student fair and ice cream social. It was great to see so many new and returning faces at the event with 171 new incoming sophomores and 80 new graduate students in MS, Professional Masters, and PhD programs. This week, we welcome Dr. Luis Solorio as the new Director of the BME Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion committee- please see Dr. Jackie Linnes' statement below. I want to thank Jackie for her leadership and drive over the past two years as the inaugural director and I look forward to her continued leadership in BME as she also takes on additional responsibilities as the Director of the Honors program for the COE. Congrats to both Luis and Jackie on these next steps. Also, I want to remind students and postdocs to submit their Art of Research entries by this WEDNESDAY. We have a great event lined up on September 9th where you'll be able to present your work in a unique way to alumni, colleagues, and friends.

DEI Committee Update
(From Jackie Linnes): It has been a great pleasuring serving as the Director of Diversity Equity and Inclusion (DEI) in the Weldon School over the last 2 years. I am taking on a new role within the College of Engineering as the Director of the Honors Program and I want to ensure continuing momentum of DEI support in the School. I worked with Dr. Umulis to identify and ask the next Director for our school and I'm happy to report that Dr. Luis Solorio has accepted this responsibility. I look forward to remaining involved in the Weldon School community and supporting the efforts of the DEI Steering Committee under its new. As a U.S. Army veteran with an award-winning teaching record and a highly successful, diverse, and inclusive research lab, Dr. Solorio has demonstrated commitment and aptitude for his new role as DEI Director at the Weldon School. I look forward to building an even more inclusive, diverse and equitable community under his leadership.
I'm proud of what we were able to do as a school in support of DEI during my time as the director. With representation from faculty, staff and students, and support from departmental leadership, the DEI Steering Committee has built off of the Diversity and Inclusion Working group and the welcoming culture of the Weldon School to further provide support for our diverse, welcoming and inclusive community. From initiating an all-school climate survey to identify needs in the Weldon School to building the graduate peer mentoring program and DEI journal clubs with BMEGSA, to co-developing the Undergraduate Resource Center with Academic Programs, to generating holistic faculty hiring rubrics, to setting up our High School Outreach to local high schools and Summer Internships for underrepresented students, the committee has already made many positive impacts in the Weldon School. I look forward to supporting Dr. Solorio during the transition and continuing to be involved where I can, while also taking on new opportunities for mentorship and training in the College of Engineering.

Danielle E. Soranno, MD, Associate Professor of Pediatrics, Indiana University School of Medicine will present "Long-term Kidney and Systemic Sequelae of Acute Kidney Injury."
Dr. Soranno's research focuses on the long-term kidney and systemic sequelae of acute kidney injury (AKI). Her laboratory uses injectable hydrogels for sustained local delivery of therapeutics (i.e. cytokines, cell therapies) to improve outcomes after AKI. As part of her work, she has described important differences in cardiovascular outcomes based upon sex. Current work is focused on discerning the sex differences in AKI outcomes. In addition to her basic science work, Dr. Soranno collaborates in multicentered clinical research initiatives investigating pediatric AKI. To this end, she has built a bench-to-bedside translational research program investigating long-term AKI outcomes. Dr. Soranno's collaborative research efforts will bring a bench-to-bedside pediatric AKI program to Indiana University and provide research training and opportunities for biomedical engineering students to pursue innovation within the field of pediatrics. It is anticipated that these collaborative interactions will result in the development of innovative solutions to pediatric-specific clinical dilemmas. Dr. Soranno is an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at Indiana University School of Medicine, and an attending pediatric nephrologist at Riley Hospital for Children. She completed her undergraduate degree in Biomedical Engineering and medical school training at Case Western Reserve University. She received her residency training in pediatrics at the University of Colorado, and then went to the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia at the University of Pennsylvania for her fellowship training in pediatric nephrology. She served as faculty at the University of Colorado from 2013-2022 prior to being recruited to Indiana University in 2022.

This is a chance to showcase the breadth of research across the school and could be a great opportunity to also showcase your individual lab especially if your lab is planning on recruiting in the upcoming years . We are 5 days away from the Energy Innovation Challenge application going live! I am reaching out before the application period to provide you with all necessary information and resources that you may require. Additionally, I continue to make myself available for any questions you have about this event or to discuss the competition with you further.
Below you will find all the information your students will need to participate in this year's competition.
Information Session Registration: The application will be live August 30th, but students can now register to take part in our Info Sessions. These sessions are to provide students with information about this year's competition, and the opportunity to form teams if they have not already done so. As a reminder these will be regional so be sure students sign up for the appropriate region or the weekend session. They can register with either link below:

PLaCE Short Course Registration is Open!
The registration is now open for the PLaCE Short Course for international students. Visiting Scholars may register after Aug. 24 on a space available basis.

Session 1 dates are Aug. 29 - Oct. 6
Session 2 dates are Oct. 17 - Dec. 1
Classes meet twice a week for 75 minutes. Many classes, such as the Writing Practicums meet once a week and then the students have one on one conferences with the instructor.

We would like to draw your attention to the events that the AMAP plans to hold this semester. Attached, please find the flyer for the Fall 2022 AMAP events. Advanced Methods at Purdue is a method-oriented cross-college initiative that aims to promote collaborative opportunities towards the development of a multi-college, shared graduate training platform, including talks, workshops, a graduate certification program in advanced statistics and methodologies, and an interdisciplinary space for methodological consulting in the behavioral, health, and social sciences. The AMAP welcomes anyone (not limited to those in behavioral, health, and social sciences) at Purdue to join our events/activities.
Also, we have attached the AMAP graduate certificate program flyer. The AMAP certificate empowers students to respond to novel challenges in the behavioral, health, and social sciences with the methodological rigor and multidisciplinary view needed to lead groundbreaking scientific endeavors. The interdisciplinary nature of this certificate facilitates collaborations among diverse sets of instructors and students. Earning your official AMAP Interdisciplinary Methods certificate, listed on your academic transcript and CV/resume, is a great way to signal your skills in and commitment to excellence in methodology. Data analytic skills and interdisciplinary thinking are highly sought after skills for employers across all sectors.
