This program has many excellent BME-focused honors undergraduates interested in research and are looking for BME graduate students to enroll in this course next fall which provides both hands on experience as mentors in their research labs and community of practice for the graduate mentors. --------------------------- The John Martinson Honors College (JMHC) is inviting graduate students in STEM fields to apply for the Future Mentors Program for Fall 2025. This program provides a unique opportunity for graduate students-particularly doctoral candidates aspiring to academic careers-to gain hands-on mentoring experience while receiving formal training in research mentorship. In the fall, participants will enroll in HONR 59901, a seminar that equips them with evidence-based mentorship skills. Additionally, each graduate mentor will be paired with up to two Honors College undergraduate students who will assist with the mentor's research project, offering practical mentorship experience. Please find the attached callout for more details. Evidence on the systemic distribution, local accumulation, and the physicochemical characterization of wear particles, specifically regarding size and elemental composition, is largely unknown. Additionally, the local effects of exposure under different scenarios, such as periprosthetic osteolysis, T-cell-mediated aseptic inflammation, and the role of degradation products in the onset of periprosthetic joint infections (PJI) are poorly understood. In this seminar, Dr. Schoon will present recent findings on exposure to arthroprosthetic metals. This includes a clinical study analyzing multi-metal levels in cerebrospinal fluid and blood from patients with arthroplasty implants and the characterization of arthroprosthetic wear particles in human tissue using advanced imaging techniques, including synchrotron-based methods. His work on the biological consequences of exposure to degradation products from metallic biomaterials primarily focuses on the impact of metal ions and particles on bone homeostasis and their influence on the functionality of immune cells following infection with PJI-relevant bacteria. The overall aim of his work is to optimize patient safety in orthopedic surgery and contribute to the development of next-generation orthopedic implants. Biography: Dr. Janosch Schoon is a group leader and head of experimental research in the Center for Orthopedics, Trauma Surgery and Rehabilitation Medicine at the Medical University of Greifswald in Germany. His research spans orthopedic biomaterial implants, tissue engineering, and in vitro humanized models of implant associated inflammation and cellular processes. He has a background in Applied Chemistry, Clinical Phamacology and Toxicology, and received his PhD in basic medical research at the Charité Medical University in Berlin. Dr. Schoon received the Basic Research Award from the German Society for Arthoplasty, and the Heinz-Mittelmeier Research Award from the German Society for Orthopedics and Orthopedic Surgery. ~ BME Host: Taimoor H. Dear BME and College of Engineering colleagues, Please see the attached Bottorff Fellowship application form for Summer 2025. The Bottorff Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to increase the number of Purdue doctoral engineering students focused on medical technology innovation and clinical translation. Funds to support a summer clinical immersion experience are available to help students gain clinical exposure at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). This full-time 8-week summer clinical immersion experience will be followed by a fall class focused on biomedical product translation (BME 56100 Preclinical and Clinical Study Design or BME 59500 Biomedship). Finally, a spring Regulatory class will help fellows understand the workings of the US FDA and other regulatory agencies and the steps needed for clinical translation. Applications are due by Friday, March 7th. Miller Professor, Department of Neuroscience, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University Abstract: The greatest desire for most people with high-level spinal cord injury is for restored hand movement. My lab developed an intracortical brain-computer interface (iBCI) in monkeys that used recordings of single neurons in the motor cortex to make predictions of muscle activity. These, in turn, we used to control Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) of the muscles of the monkey's hand, which were temporarily paralyzed by a peripheral nerve block. This FES iBCI allowed the monkeys to voluntarily control not only the movement of their fingers, but also to exert graded force on grasped objects. This "biomimetic" iBCI allowed more nearly natural control of hand movement than is possible with other existing iBCIs. In this talk, I will describe the basic work that led to our proof-of-concept in monkeys, and our further development of wireless versions of the FES iBCI applicable to a broader range of the activities of daily living. We have examined the representation in M1, of a broad range of behaviors, including both well-learned, stereotyped movements in the lab, and the more natural grasping movements related to food retrieval and locomotion in the monkey's home cage. These different motor actions occupy different regions of neural state space, have dimensionality ~50% larger than do the lab behaviors, and are somewhat more nonlinear. As a consequence, simple linear decoders of EMG fail. I will describe the novel approach we have recently taken to solve this problem, as well our most recent efforts to translate this technology to humans. Bio: Lee E. Miller is a Professor in the Departments of Neuroscience, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Biomedical Engineering at Northwestern University. He received the Ph.D. degree in Physiology from Northwestern University in 1989, then completed two years of postdoctoral training in the Department of Medical Physics, University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He was inducted into the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering in 2016 and was the president of the Society for the Neural Control of Movement from 2015 - 2023. Dr. Miller has had a career-long interest in the motor and sensory signals that are generated by single neurons in the brains of monkeys during arm and hand movement. His early work was devoted to studying these signals in the brainstem, cerebral cortex, and cerebellum, and their relation to muscle activity. In the past 20 years, Dr. Miller's lab has increasingly focused on translational research, in particular, the development of intracortical brain computer interface technology to restore limb movement to paralyzed patients. His interdisciplinary approach has led to productive collaborations locally, nationally, and internationally. Most recently he has begun working with humans with spinal cord injury as part of the Cortical Bionics Research Group. Dadarlat Makin Abstract: In the mouse somatosensory cortex (S1), whisker touch evokes an early and late response that travel horizontally across the cortex resembling a traveling wave. Traveling waves have been shown to be a key aspect of neural processing, and previous work has indicated the late traveling wave is reliant on long range feedback from motor cortex (MC). How these traveling waves change under a goal directed behavior and what effect MC feedback has on S1 neural processing is still unclear. To investigate the effect of MC feedback on traveling wave dynamics and neuronal spiking in S1, we inhibited MC inputs to S1 using optogenetics while recording with micro-ECoG arrays or silicon probes in S1. Under passive whisker stimulation, we observed a significant decrease in wave amplitude, wave speed, and multi-unit activity during the late period (~100ms after the deflection), accompanied with desynchronization of sensory-evoked populational response. This suggests organized and sustained S1 activity is supported by MC inputs. Interestingly, the MC-inhibition was accompanied with increased spiking in deep cortical layers, suggesting MC feedback onto S1 also has an inhibitory role. In animals performing an active whisker-based sensory discrimination task, we observed an increase in phase locking and decrease in touch evoked wave speed for reward vs non-reward whisker touches, suggesting an improved neural encoding precision through reward reinforced learning. Interestingly, inhibition of MC inputs during active touch showed an increase in spontaneous and touch evoked wave speed of both reward-associated and unassociated whiskers. This indicates MC influence on S1 traveling waves is brain state dependent. Greetings, The Office of Graduate Admissions will be meeting with students in-person to collect/verify admission documents to satisfy conditions of admission/continued enrollment. Students are able to drop off transcripts to YONG 170 at any time or can have the documents sent electronically from the institution, however, if they are asking for the transcripts to be returned then students will need to attend one of the dates below. There is no guarantee, however, that the transcripts would be returned. We also plan to offer walk-in hours during the month of June, those dates will be communicated at a later date. CVO arises from venous stasis caused by compression, valve damage, proximal vein disease, or post-thrombotic changes. This leads to the formation of collagen-rich lesions that impair blood flow, thicken vessel walls, and elevate pressure. While arterial remodeling is well studied, the impact of altered flow in the venous system due to disease remains less understood. This study aims to address the gap in knowledge of venous flow conditions by developing clinically relevant benchtop models to investigate the effects of variable inflow conditions in CVO. Benchtop models were constructed using polydimethylsiloxane and a silicone rubber, with the iliofemoral vein as the target (diseased) segment, the popliteal, great saphenous, and deep femoral as the inflow veins, and the common iliac vein as the outflow segment. One healthy model and nine diseased models were developed with varying sizes of CVO lesions in the iliofemoral vein. Ultrasound studies were conducted in each of the models to assess the impact of different inflow conditions on velocities within and around the lesion. In one model, particle-tracking was used to visualize flow patterns around the lesion. Doppler ultrasound measurements showed that as the cross-sectional area and length of the lesion increased, average velocities were higher within and proximal to the lesion compared to distal regions. Lesions with greater cross-sectional area exhibited less proximal recovery, with velocity remaining elevated rather than returning to baseline levels, an effect that was more pronounced at higher inflow rates. Color Doppler studies revealed a flow eddy at the lesion inlets, consistent with clinical observations in patients with sudden stenosis. Particle-tracking further supported these findings. These results suggest that the degree of occlusion (i.e., cross-sectional area) influences flow dynamics more than the length of the lesion. Additionally, this study demonstrates the feasibility of replicating clinically observed venous flow patterns within a benchtop setting.
