[cid:image001.jpg@01D7ABA9.5A84BBF0] Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Seminar Series Wednesday, September 22, 2021 9:30-10:20am MJIS 1001 https://purdue-edu.zoom.us/j/95028921977 A Journey from Single-Woxel to Whole Brain Noninvasive Molecular and Myeloarchitectonic Imaging [cid:image002.png@01D7ABA9.5A84BBF0] Uzay E Emir, Ph.D. Assistant Professor School of Health Sciences Purdue University Abstract: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a powerful, non-invasive tool for biomedical imaging. MRI offers remarkably flexible "contrast" because it is sensitive to local molecular and myelin content. The ability to measure these noninvasively in living subjects would represent a significant leap forward in neuroscience. Methods of this kind would allow scientists to: study the formation of myelin, an essential aspect of development; disentangle complicated disease dynamics such as demyelination, neuronal loss, and gliosis. Thus, this talk will introduce and demonstrate Magnetic Resonance Imaging and Spectroscopy techniques, providing flexible structural and molecular contrast to probe human organs noninvasively within a clinically feasible acquisition time at 3T and 7T. The methods have been validated in a series of phantom experiments, and their feasibility was assessed in healthy volunteers. Experiments qualitatively demonstrate the advantage of the proposed methods in terms of their improved temporal and spatial resolution, reduced contamination from neighboring voxels, and further acceleration with novel reconstruction techniques. Bio: Dr. Uzay E Emir is currently an Assistant Professor in the School of Health Sciences at Purdue University. Having received his PhD degree from Bogazici University, Turkey, in which he studied BOLD fMRI signal transients with different neuro imaging modalities, he broadened his scientific expertise further by undertaking postdoctoral training in the field of ultra-high field (UHF) magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) methods. Following this extensive training period, he worked at the FMRIB Centre, University of Oxford, from 2013-2017 as a Head of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy. Dr. Emir's expertise lies in the development and clinical translation of magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) techniques at clinical (3T) and ultra-high field (UHF>3T) magnetic fields. Art of Research instructions and updates

Hello BME Graduate Students! A couple of updates first. We WILL still be having our first Art of Research Exhibition on Friday, Sept. 24th, however the starting time has changed!! We will be starting at 3:30 PM in the afternoon. The original plan was to follow the Celebration event for our former Head- George Wodicka, however that event has been postponed. This was largely done due to concerns over having a large number of external visitors to an in-person event. Instead, the event and celebration will be smaller, there will be Advisory Board members present for the advisory board meeting earlier in the day, and this will still be a fun way to showcase your creative work with the BME community- your peers, BME faculty from MJIS and from across campus, and others. We will have light refreshments as well. I’m looking forward to it! Using Additive Manufacturing to Engineer Synthetic Tissues with Functional Gradients at Various Length Scales [cid:image006.jpg@01D7A56F.7B53A070] Juana Mendenhall, Ph.D. Walter E. Massey Professor of Physical Sciences Morehouse College Abstract: The development of inks for engineered tissues using additive manufacturing requires comparable mimicking of mechanical properties at varies length scales. Hence, there is a need to create synthetic tissues that provide heterogeneous and complex organization that can facilitate cell structure and patterning. Towards this end, the development of composite inks that can facilitate biological molecules to guide cell orientation, proliferation, and tissue formation in 3D printed constructs is essential. Recent advances in 3D bioprinting in the Mendenhall laboratory at Morehouse college has enabled the spatial patterning of both cells and materials to achieve functional gradients. This presentation will discuss the spatial and temporal patterning of biomaterials doped with nanomaterials such as graphene oxide and cerium oxide to guide cellular orientation in 3D printed constructs while influencing biological markers that regulate cellular metabolism. Further, we will discuss the effect of functional stratification in 3D printed constructs using a combination of FTIR (Fourier Transform Infrared) microscopy and microscopy to measure local concentrations of key extracellular matrix components and this effect on chemical and mechanical properties. Bio: Dr. Juana Mendenhall is currently the Walter E. Massey Professor of Physical Sciences at Morehouse College, Director of the Regenerative Biomaterials and Synthetic Functional Tissue lab, President and Founder of TheraViscTM, LLC, a company that specializes in developing viscosupplement injectable gels to help with knee injuries, the TEDx licensee for TEDx Morehouse College. Her ground-breaking patent-pending medical technology is one of the first medical technologies to show real potential in healing osteoarthritis. Since he joined the faculty of the School of Chemical and Biological Engineering of Seoul National University in 1997, he has focused on the synthesis and applications of uniform-sized nanoparticles and related nanostructured materials, and published > 400 papers in prominent international journals (> 65,000 citations and h-index of > 128). He is a SNU Distinguished Professor. In September 2020, he was selected as 2020 Citation Laureate (known as Nobel Prize watch list) in Chemistry by Clarivate Analytics/Web of Science. In 2011, he was selected as "Top 100 Chemists" of the decade by UNESCO&IUPAC. From 2014 to 2020, he has been chosen as "Highly Cited Researcher" in both chemistry and materials science areas by Clarivate Analytics. Since 2012, he has been serving as a Director of Center for Nanoparticle Research of Institute for Basic Science (IBS). He is Fellow of Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) and Materials Research Society (MRS). He received many awards including the Korea S&T Award from the Korean President (2016), Hoam Prize (2012, Samsung Hoam Foundation), POSCO-T. J. Park Award (2008), and the IUVSTA Prize for Technology (International Union for Vacuum Science, Technique and Applications, 2016). Schafer Professor Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Bioengineering, Pathobiology, Carle College of Medicine, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Abstract: Living or synthetic active matters are capable of converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. These matters, therefore, present unique features such as locomotion, manipulation, and secretion activities. These matters allow us to discover new physics rules and further overcome various challenges in the real world. In particular, our group has been working on synthesizing active matters that modulate molecular and cell transport across biophysical barriers and improve the quality of infection control and molecular/cell therapies. This talk will highlight our recent studies, including self-propelling microbubblers that can remove bacterial biofilm and colloidal particles that can regulate stem cell secretome and homing for vascular treatments. Bio: Hyunjoon Kong is a Robert W. Schafer professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and Pathobiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He also holds affiliation with the Department of Bioengineering, Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, and Neuroscience Program. He received his engineering education from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Ph. D.) and performed post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. He joined the University of Illinois in 2007. He received the Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association, the Career Award from NSF, Center for Advanced Study Fellowship, UIUC Engineering Dean's Award for Research Excellence, Centennial Scholar, and Promotion Award. He was elected to an American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Fellow.
