Schafer Professor Chemical & Biomolecular Engineering, Bioengineering, Pathobiology, Carle College of Medicine, The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign Abstract: Living or synthetic active matters are capable of converting chemical energy to mechanical energy. These matters, therefore, present unique features such as locomotion, manipulation, and secretion activities. These matters allow us to discover new physics rules and further overcome various challenges in the real world. In particular, our group has been working on synthesizing active matters that modulate molecular and cell transport across biophysical barriers and improve the quality of infection control and molecular/cell therapies. This talk will highlight our recent studies, including self-propelling microbubblers that can remove bacterial biofilm and colloidal particles that can regulate stem cell secretome and homing for vascular treatments. Bio: Hyunjoon Kong is a Robert W. Schafer professor in the Department of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, and Pathobiology at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC). He also holds affiliation with the Department of Bioengineering, Center for Biophysics and Computational Biology, and Neuroscience Program. He received his engineering education from the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor (Ph. D.) and performed post-doctoral research at the University of Michigan and Harvard University. He joined the University of Illinois in 2007. He received the Scientist Development Grant from the American Heart Association, the Career Award from NSF, Center for Advanced Study Fellowship, UIUC Engineering Dean's Award for Research Excellence, Centennial Scholar, and Promotion Award. He was elected to an American Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) Fellow.
