Just a reminder that motorized scooters, skateboards and bicycles are NOT allowed in MJIS. The police have alerted us that they have several instances on video of individuals riding bicycles, skateboards, etc. INSIDE the building. The floors that were recently carefully cleaned and waxed by our service workers have been scratched and gouged, perhaps beyond repair. Also, MJIS is a NON-SMOKING facility. BME 690-Grad Student Research Seminar-this course replaces what used to be called "summer seminar" and is available for thesis students to take to fulfill 1 of their seminar requirements whether you are presenting or not. You are also more than welcome to attend as many seminars as you would like without taking the course. 2. BME 690-Digital Health Transformation is a new course created by Dr. Steinhubl. Good Morning, The BME Business Office received notification from Sponsored Program Services this week, that Michelle Mariga has been assigned to take on the College of Engineering Post Award Management. We are currently working with Michelle on items, and hope to have any outstanding issues resolved soon. We also wanted to ensure you are aware of changes to University Travel regulations announced in Purdue Today on 7/2/24. You can find the Purdue Today here: https://view.communicate.purdue.edu/?qs=1cd2e813a58726557d277bb0fbb27fd1aab… Below is a summary of some of the changes found in the new regulations: * Expense reports with outstanding Travel Card transactions that are 180 days or longer after the last day of official business travel will be submitted by Purdue travel staff on behalf of the traveler. Personal reimbursement will not be allowable after 180 days after the last day of official business travel * Reduced from 14 hours, eight hours is the new threshold for a flight upgrade to business class to be an allowed expense, and layovers are considered part of that time * The maximum reimbursable amount for a domestic flight which includes personal time and does not have a cost comparison was increased from $400 to $550 * The maximum reimbursable amount for an international flight which includes personal time and does not have a cost comparison is now capped at $1,000 Attached is a copy of the full Purdue travel guidelines. Please note (and follow) the suggestions below, and help us keep cool! [Purdue logo] [cid:image003.png@01DAD479.7A0E4DA0] ENERGY CONSERVATION ACTION DAY ON MONDAY, JULY 15 Due to the upcoming extreme temperatures and humidity forecasted, Administrative Operations is declaring an Energy Conservation Action Day on Monday (July 15). ACTIONS TO TAKE * If possible, consider re-scheduling research activities for cooler parts of the day or different days of the week. * Close fume hood sashes completely when not in use to reduce the amount of conditioned air that's exhausted. * If you are able to, increase your thermostat by a few degrees to reduce air conditioning demand. * Close windows, blinds and doors to prevent heat from entering. * Turn off lights when rooms are unoccupied to reduce electricity use and eliminate the heat given off by the lights. * Turn off and unplug any unused equipment/devices to reduce electricity use. * Eliminate or reduce indoor heat sources, including autoclaves, lasers and ovens, especially during the hottest hours of the day. We demonstrated that ceria-based nanoparticles can work as therapeutic antioxidants to treat various intractable diseases.1 MnFe2O4 & CeO2 nanoparticle-anchored mesoporous silica nanoparticles can synergistically treat rheumatoid arthritis (RA).2a Furthermore, we demonstrated that ceria nanoparticle and mesenchymal stem cell works not only individually but also cooperatively toward a comprehensive RA treatment.2b Ceria nanoparticles deposited with copper ions were synthesized for effective and synergistic antioxidant therapy to treat ischemic vascular diseases.3 Ce-DTPA complex combined with Fe-DTPA complex were utilized as non-accumulative adjuvants for treating sepsis.4 Orally deliverable iron-ceria nanotablets, where iron-ceria nanoparticles are clustered in calcium phosphate and coated with a pH-responsive polymer, can treat inflammatory bowel disease.5 We showed that CeO2/Mn3O4 nanoparticles can work as effective radio-protectant not only against acute radiation syndrome, but also for protecting salivary gland during head and neck cancer radiation treatment.6 We synthesized a lysosomal alkalizer with an iron oxide core and ceria satellites to impair lysosomal enzyme activity and autophagy for treatment of primary tumor and metastasis.7 We proposed a co-delivery system of small-molecule drugs, proteins, and nanoparticles using large-pore mesoporous silica nanoparticles to inhibit lactate metabolism and induce intracellular acidification for synergistic cancer treatment.8 We reported a heterogeneous chemodynamic therapy system based on copper-iron peroxide nanoparticles for tumor microenvironment-mediated synergistic therapy.9 We fabricated ultraflexible and/or stretchable soft-electronic and optoelectronic devices integrated with various functional nanomaterials and their applications to wearable and implantable medical and healthcare devices. We fabricated electrically conductive and elastic Ag&Au nanowire-rubber nanocomposites to treat cardiovascular diseases such as heart failure and ventricular tachyarrhythmia.10 We fabricated highly conductive and elastic nano-electrodes for their applications to healthcare and skin electronic devices.11 We synthesized a flexible/sticky electronic patch and an injectable hydrogel nanocomposite for controlled drug delivery for GBM treatment.12 ~ BME Host: Chi Hwan Lee ~ References: 1. a) "Ceria-Based Therapeutic Antioxidants for Biomedical Applications," Adv. He is recognized for his outstanding contributions in scalable synthesis of uniform nanoparticles, and pioneering research in designed synthesis of inorganic nanomaterials for biomedical, energy, and soft-electronic-device applications. He was listed in Top 100 Chemists in 2011, Highly Cited Researcher (both Chem&MSE) from 2014 to 2023, and chosen as 2020 Citation Laureate in Chemistry. He received four major Korean Sci&Tech awards including 2022 Grand Prize of National Academy of Engineering of Korea, 2016 Presidential Korea's Best Scientist Award, 2012 Samsung Hoam Prize, and 2008 POSCO-T.J. Park Award. He also received 2016 IUVSTA Prize at International Vacuum Congress, and delivered Kavli Foundation Frontiers of Materials Research Lecture.
