*LORRE January Safety Issue* 01/20/2017 All: Welcome back to the new semester! In order for the lab to continue to be a safe working environment, we must strengthen safety training. We encourage all of you to use the following resources for Purdue REM safety training: * Chemical Hygiene Plan Training <https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/ih/chptraining.htm> * Hazard Communication (HazCom/Right-to-Know) DTI Training <https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/ih/hazcom.htm#dti> * Hazard Communication (HazCom/Right-to-Know) Online Training <https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/ih/hazcom.htm#hct> The safety committee will be holding the "2017 LORRE Safety Retraining" next Monday (01/23/2017) at 3:30 pm in the Potter building Room 234 (K.S. Fu Room). We expect *everyone* to attend this meeting. The retraining will cover the main topics in the Lab Safety Guide, including PPE, equipment, and safe chemical handling. We will review the /2016 Safety Report/ and as well as discuss new safety work processes for this spring semester. The meeting will last approximately 40 minutes. Once again, we need all LORRE members and associated members to come for this safety retraining. Everyone must sign the 2017 year retraining sheet to prove that they were in attendance and received their retraining. Thank you, LORRE Safety Committee
To All: Petr will set up three fuel testing devices in Lab #B38. We need to re-arrange the work space, refrigerators, and wall cabinets. If you have an either experimental systems or experimental materials in the room, please discuss this with Iman Beheshti (# B38 Mayor) and Petr Vozka. On Tuesday(1/31/2017), we will defrost the freezers of B38 and treat the materials and samples within which are no longer in use. If you something needs to be kept, please let us know before Tuesday. Thank you, LORRE Safety Committee.
To All Good morning! We have found a lot of the dirty glassware, waste bottles, and chemicals while cleaning the Lab#333 hood. We are not sure if these are dangerous chemicals, waste materials, or samples. We have asked multiple LORRE members, but nobody can account for what was found. This makes it difficult to fill out a pickup form.Purdue REM will be spent a lot of money to detect unknown liquid chemical in each bottle. As a friendly reminder: 1)The Hood is not a storage space, please put chemicals away properly after using them, and arrange for the disposal of waste. Keep the work space clean and clear while not experimenting. 2)Do not use the hood as a way to dispose of chemicals. Do not allow for volatile compounds to dry in the hood, this is dangerous to the health of all people who use the lab space. Openly exposed chemicals, especially volatile ones, have the potential to pollute air and expose individuals outside and inside the building. This practice should not be used. Instead they should be capped and stored for REM pickup. 3)Liquid biological waste should be collected in containers for autoclaving or chemical disinfection before disposal. Thank you to *Evan E Scwinski, Raymond Red Corn, Dan Hoban, Justin Couetil,* and *Nwadilora* *Amarachi Ezenwukwa* for keeping the lab space safe and encouraging chemical safety throughout LORRE. Thank you, LORRE safety committee.
*LORRE February Safety Issue* 2/27/2017 */Chemical Inventory development/* We have a new chemical inventory system based out of Google Drive. The room by room inventories have been consolidated into a single inventory. With this new inventory it is everyone's responsibility to ensure that the document stay up to date. You will not have editing rights directly to the inventory but you can update the inventory by filling out a Google form which will immediately update to the list.It will be easy and convenient**for LORRE members to review LORRE storage Chemicals, and it will also save time and avoid duplication of chemical purchases.*Red Corn, Raymond* will give a demo in an upcoming lab meeting (3/6/2017). 1)All chemicals should be placed back in their original position after you use them, otherwise the chemical Inventory becomes useless. 2)It is everyone's responsibility to fill out this form when new chemicals are found, old ones are used up, or other discrepancies in the inventory are discovered. 3)Submit MSDs sheets to the Lab's mayor where the chemical is stored for incorporation into the MSDs folder. To All:
*Exit Checklist*
This semester we will have a number of students leaving LORRE lab, either because they will be graduating or because they found a new job. We understand that time is tight and that there are many things that have to be done in preparation for you leaving. But we still hope that you can find the time to clean your work area.If your advisor needs you to keep some experiment samples or materials, please label them clearly and store them appropriately. If you produced any chemical and biological waste, please dispose of them following Purdue Rem’s waste disposal procedures.
At present our refrigerator, freezer, and cabinets are already full, and we need space for next year’s students to store their experimental materials. We believe that you will be responsible enough to clear up some space for next year following the proper lab safety techniques. Also, please remember fill out the LORRE Exit Checklist (attached below) before you leave.
**
*New Labels*
OSHA has released some new regulations regarding container labeling. They now require containers to be labeled with hazards and pictograms. Purdue REM has labels that follow these new regulations. A secondary container label (pictured below) is needed if a chemical is transferred from one container to another. A hazardous waste label (pictured below) should be used on all mixed hazardous waste containers. Please make sure that all containers in the lab are labeled appropriately.
*Important reminder*
In the LORRE seminar last week, Dr. Mosier mentioned a few important items that we would like to highlight. Please lock the lab doors during the evenings and weekends. Also, make sure to properly label your experiment while it’s running for clear communication for safety reasons.
Thank you,
LORRE Safety Committee

*LORRE July and August safety issue* 8/30/2017 To all: On July 18th we had a very successful LORRE Lab Safety Day. We are very grateful for all the LORRE professors leading by example through active participation in this activity. All lab students and visiting scholars made great efforts. This summer we had four students get a doctoral degree and three students get graduate degrees. As they left, the safe handling of all waste material and management of lab safety is a lot to be solved. However, this safety day was very helpful in resolving these safety concerns. In early August we got the 2017 Integrated Safety Plan (ISP) annual renewal certification. This will also encourage us to work hard and continue improving our safety program. Today at 3:30pm in the Potter center FU Room #234 REM Kristi Evans will gave us the Lockout/ Tagout safety training. We want everyone to attend if you are not in class. Thanks, LORRE safety committee
*LORRE September Safety Issue* (9/6/2017) To All: Today (9/6/2017) at3:30pm in the Fu Room(POTR 234) we have an important safety retraining. This time the safety training session will be focused on how to manage Lab. waste disposal. Mainly including three aspects: Biological, chemical, and physical hazards. Biological hazards are composed of any material that contains or has been contaminated by a biohazardous agents (e.g. microbial pathogens). Chemical hazards are caused by exposure to chemicals in the workplace, such as acids, solvents (especially if they do not have a label), vapors and fumes, and flammable materials. Physical hazards are those involving broken glass and sharp disposal. We will also describe how to apply The LORRE Chemical Inventory on line. We expect that all students and staff who work in the LORRE lab attend this 2017 fall semester safety retraining. We need you to sign the safety retraining form. Thanks LORRE safety committee
To all, The J-20 XPI centrifuge in room 252 is fixed. There are now two working centrifuges- the J-20 XPI and the J-30I in room 254. These two centrifuges only have one contract, so please use them carefully. If you use the centrifuges, please record it in the log. The speed cannot exceed the maximum, the number on the rotor must match the number on the system display, and don't forget to tighten the rotor until it is stable. If anything happens, please talk to a safety community member. Pablo, you can use the J-20 XPI centrifuge on the weekend. Thanks, Linda and Casey

*February LORRE Safety Issue* 2/5/2018 To All, *_Mayor Assignments (2018) Update_* “Mayor” System was proposed by the graduate students and they have each took turn as a “Lab Mayor” and played an important role in the lab safety program. Responsibilities of being a “Mayor” is to keep the lab stalked on necessities such as gloves, paper towels, and glassware detergents as well as maintaining and organizing a clean environment for the lab. Finally, the “Mayor” system will enhance safety awareness and lab responsibilities to the participants. *_2018 Soybean Innovation Competition Teams _* In order to ensure safety, if any of these teams need to use the lab over the weekend, please contact our graduate students who will be studying in the lab during the weekend for assistance in opening the lab door. *_GC computer now repaired_* Recently, the GC computer (potr333pc3) was repaired by ECN and we have changed the password. If you plan to use the GC system, please contact our PhD student*, Emma C Brace.* These are the suggestions by ECN to keep potr333pc3 safe and secure: 1)Run Windows Updates on a regular basis as well as keeping your antivirus software up to date. 2)Using the Antivirus, make sure the system scans itself on a regular basis. 3)If you need to use the Internet, make sure you are using safe surfing techniques. Some of our suggestions can be found here: http://eng.purdue.edu/jump/81534b 4)Only download from known good sources. Thank you, LORRE Safety Committee
*LORRE March Safety issue* 3/7/2018 To all, /New Class II Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC)/ //A new BSC was installed in lab #232. The operating instructions will be posted on the face of the machine. Please leave the BSC hand-held controller in its place, to prevent losing it. This BSC is mainly used for the Lilly project. For safety reasons, other projects involving pathogens (e.g. /Salmonella, Listeria/) should continue to use Lab #335. /New Refrigerators/ There are two new glass door refrigerators. Each is set to 4-5˚C. One is in Lab #232 and the other in #333. These lock, and the keys will be kept in both their respective labs /and/ the LORRE office. Refrigerator #232 is mainly for Lilly project-related materials. Refrigerator #333 is for HPLC, GC samples, some chemicals, and buffers. /Autoclave/ //The autoclave is vital to LORRE. Some problems have recently arisen. We would like to emphasize:*Every day, the system needs to be flushed*. When doing so, /completely/ open the drain valve- it takes multiple full rotations. Proper use will avoid damage to the autoclave. Every time you use the autoclave, /fill out the Century Sterilizer Operation Record sheet. / Thank you for your cooperation, LORRE Safety Committee
A friendly reminder, We had mentioned the new Biological Safety Cabinets (BSC) in the March Safety Issue. The hand-held controller is stored in a holder in order to prevent losing it.Unfortunately, the holder was removed recently and the remote was left on a table with the back missing, as seen below. The BSC hand held device is specially configured. Please don't remove the holder for the remote if you are going to change the batteries.Make sure to recover the remote after you change the batteries, or else it will be more easily lost. We have now placed the remote and its holder on the side of the glass door, as pictured below. If you are unfamiliar with how to use the remote we have posted instructions on the door.Or, if you are still unsure of how to use it, please contact us. Thank you, LORRE Safety Community

*May LORRE Safety Issue* 5/29/2018 To All: _Chemical Inventory_ Since 2003 our lab has established a chemical inventory.Presently our lab chemical inventory is online in order to improve convenience and monitor chemical supplies, especially in regards to security for high-risk chemicals.By implementing an online inventory, researchers can search instantly for a compound name and that compound's storage location. This saves time and avoids repeated purchases. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1usj4PDUVclYcDadBOzmwRAhxLLS3hkcBbg6O... (Ctrl + click to follow link) Please help the online chemical inventory to remain effective by 1.Putting chemicals back in place after using them.If chemicals are not put back where they belong after use it makes it difficult for others to find through the chemical inventory. 2. Tell us to update the chemical inventory if you purchase a new chemical. Please send e-mail for new chemical name, amount and stager location. If a chemical runs out we need to remove that on the list. Thanks, LORRE Safety Committee

Dear Linda: Nate and I, on behalf of our colleagues, wanted to follow up on your kind note and to tell you that we will miss you – most of all I will miss you - after 24 years of wonderful service to LORRE, to Purdue University, and to our students. I feel very fortunate that you chose to join LORRE many years ago, and appreciate the many things that you have done, and initiatives that you have undertaken on behalf of all of us. You have helped to ensure the smooth functioning of student training and undergraduate research experiences in LORRE, and have made our laboratory a welcoming place for our students, staff and researchers from across the campus and the world. The emphasis on safety is very important to our laboratory, and we all recognize what you have done in safety training and processes for our laboratory and the people who work here. This is a major achievement, and something that you have worked on very hard, in addition to your other responsibilities. We are all proud of what you have achieved. We are sad that you will be retiring, but at the same time understand you want to be able to enjoy the next phase in your life. You will be difficult to replace but we will be recruiting someone else. We are open to your suggestions of possible people who might be interested in applying for this position, and advice on how to continue the successful programs that you have developed over the years. In the meantime, please accept our congratulations and recognition of what you have done for LORRE. Thank you! To All: The Annual HEPA Filtered Equipment Certifications will be carried out on Thursday 07/12/2018. We will empty the Biological Safety Cabinet (BSC) (ID-734596) in Room #237 on 07/11/2018. Please don’t plan to use it on this date. You will be able to use the BSCs in Lab #233 (ID-733520) and Lab #252. Both BSCs have certification from REM. Today the floor of Lab #237 was covered in water, and*Samira, Elena, Pablo, Jessica, Antonio, Fabricio,****Nate, Dr. Daehwan Kim*, and possibly others worked on cleaning it.The problem most likely occurred by failing to turn off the DI water faucet. Whether or not there is DI water in the system, the faucet must always be turned off when one leaves.Otherwise, it could happen at night or on the weekend, and then we would have an even bigger problem. Thanks, LORRE Safety Committee
To All; The autoclave have been fixed. It returned to normal working condition. Autoclave is an important experimental instrument in the Lab, so all users must be trained beforehand. Please, strictly follow the procedure posted on the autoclave door if you need to operate it. In addition, fill out the autoclave log after each time you use it. We have a service plan with STERIS Corporation. If any problem arises, please contact our PhD student *Jessica L Zuponic* jzuponci@purdue.edu <mailto:jzuponci@purdue.edu> . She will assist you in contacting STERIS technician. *Robert* found that the door latch in Room 231 is sticking. Other lab doors have the same problem. Currently, Carla is contacting Phillip to solve the problem. So, when you are the last one leaving any lab room, please make sure the door is close and safe. Thanks LORRE safety committee
