Dear BME and College of Engineering colleagues, Please see the attached Bottorff Fellowship application form for Summer 2025. The Bottorff Graduate Fellowship Program is designed to increase the number of Purdue doctoral engineering students focused on medical technology innovation and clinical translation. Funds to support a summer clinical immersion experience are available to help students gain clinical exposure at the Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM). This full-time 8-week summer clinical immersion experience will be followed by a fall class focused on biomedical product translation (BME 56100 Preclinical and Clinical Study Design or BME 59500 Biomedship). Finally, a spring Regulatory class will help fellows understand the workings of the US FDA and other regulatory agencies and the steps needed for clinical translation. Applications are due by Friday, March 7th. Recent advances in retinal imaging and computer vision algorithms have shown potential for improving malaria detection. Despite these advancements, non-invasive point-of-care malaria detection has yet to be realized, primarily due to the need for specialized equipment. We investigate state-of-the-art deep learning models for automated prediction of malaria risk in a non-invasive manner. Specifically, we utilize convolutional neural networks - ResNet-18 and VGG-11 - for classifying malaria presence using photographs of the bulbar and palpebral conjunctiva, which are easily accessible sites and can contain visible symptoms for malaria. The dataset comprises 4,220 photographs from 405 children aged 5-15 years, collected using various smartphone models in a high-malaria region of Rwanda. We incorporate transfer learning with pretrained ImageNet weights, green channel extraction and histogram equalization, and data augmentation, with the aim of enhancing model performance. Our results show that transfer learning and data augmentation at certain hyperparameters improve model stability and performance with ResNet-18 and VGG-11 based on quantitative metrics like recall, F1-Scores, and test accuracies. Future research focusing on color correction and more advanced model training approaches may overcome limitations and further enhance diagnostic ability of using photographs. Judges needed for the 2025 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair - Friday March 7, 2025, 5-10 PM at Stewart Center Hello! Would you be willing to act as a judge at the 2025 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair? If you are receiving this message, it means you are eligible to volunteer as a judge in the 2025 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair on Friday March 7, 2025. It will be an in-person event at Stewart Center from 5:30-9:30 PM. This year, we have over 500 young experimentalists (5-12 graders) eagerly awaiting a chance to share their projects with you. The fair is only a few days away, so right now they are working hard on their projects. Students are going the extra mile this year to prepare presentations, and having many judges from a variety of disciplines helps us award prizes most fairly to deserving projects. That's where you come in. For those who have done this in the past you remember how it was the first time you judged - so many abstracts and projects to look at! Because of this, we need lots of help to give these students a great science fair experience. Judging really is a lot of fun, and not terribly difficult since the kids are high school age or younger. Please come out and help support this event! This event is s great way to volunteer with the community and can look great on a resume. A free dinner voucher is also provided at the event.
