Innovation on catheter designs for cerebrovascular disease treatment Sergio A. Ruiz Vega (Hugh Lee, advisor) [cid:image002.jpg@01DAFDDF.F388BCD0] Abstract: Cerebrovascular diseases rank as the second leading cause of death globally, resulting in 6.2 million fatalities annually. These conditions disrupt blood flow in the brain due to vessel narrowing (stenosis), clot formation (thrombosis), artery blockage (embolism), or vessel rupture (hemorrhage). Among cerebrovascular diseases, stroke and aneurysm are the most prevalent. Stroke occurs when a blood clot obstructs an artery, impeding cerebral circulation, while an aneurysm involves the dilation of vessel walls, which can rupture if untreated. Advancements in endovascular therapies have improved the safety and efficiency of treating these conditions compared to traditional surgical methods. Neurointerventionalists can now perform minimally invasive procedures using catheters, reducing both procedure time and recovery periods. Despite these advancements in endovascular therapies, significant challenges still contribute to complications during these procedures. In this study, we introduce two catheter innovations designed to enhance the treatment of stroke and aneurysm. Mechanical thrombectomy is an endovascular therapy that employs an aspiration catheter to remove the blood clot responsible for a stroke. However, successful clot removal on the first attempt occurs in less than 25% of patients, leading to longer procedure times and reduced survival rates. To address this, we developed a passive clot-trapping microstructure at the tip of aspiration catheters, designed to increase the force applied during clot extraction. Another endovascular therapy, aneurysm embolization, involves using a detachable coil to fill the aneurysm sac, thereby reducing the risk of rupture. However, this method has been associated with long-term complications, including incomplete aneurysmal occlusion and aneurysm recurrence. To improve outcomes, we are developing a packaging-delivery device that utilizes a novel shape memory polymer, offering a patient-specific approach to aneurysm embolization therapy. These innovations have the potential to significantly improve the effectiveness and safety of stroke and aneurysm treatments, leading to better patient outcomes. The lab specializes in (a) modeling mass transport of biochemicals through heterogeneous porous materials-primarily extracellular matrices-that change morphology dynamically due to the influence of chemical reactions and (b) modeling dynamic, multi-species biological systems involving chemical, physical, and biological interactions of diverse, heterogeneous cell populations with these materials and the chemical species in tissue microenvironments. In this seminar, vignettes of research will be highlighted from the organ systems currently under instigation in the lab: bone, lung, kidney, eye, and tumor tissue microenvironments. This work is currently supported by an NSF CAREER award and NIH R35 MIRA, R01, and R21 grants. Additionally, Dr. Ford Versypt is active in engineering education research and training. She will briefly showcase some of her team's interactive computing activities as chemical engineering educational tools in university and informal learning environments for broad access to students, educators, researchers, and lay people. Bio: Dr. Ford Versypt earned a B.S. from the University of Oklahoma and an M.S. and a Ph.D. from the University of Illinois, all in Chemical Engineering. She did her postdoc at MIT. She started her academic career at Oklahoma State University in 2014 before joining the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York as a tenured associate professor in 2021. Dr. Ford Versypt leads the Systems Biomedicine and Pharmaceutics Laboratory. She has received a number of awards for her research, teaching, and service including the NSF CAREER Award, ASEE Chemical Engineering Division's Fahien, Martin, and Corcoran Awards, and AIChE CAST Division Himmelblau Award for Innovations in Computer-Based Chemical Engineering Education. Good Morning, We have updated and hopefully improved our delivery of our weekly announcements for the fall semester. Currently, you all receive the weekly newsletter via email each Wednesday, which is a great way to receive the information, but might be a hard way to search old announcements. Starting this semester, not only will you receive an email, but we will be loading them into Brightspace each week as announcements so that they are easier to find and navigate. I just activated the course this morning, so hopefully you can all see it now. If you run into any issues let me know. Hopefully this will improve your interactions with the weekly announcements we send out. If you have other suggestions for improvement, please let us know. Innovation on catheter designs for cerebrovascular disease treatment Sergio A. Ruiz Vega (Hugh Lee, advisor) [cid:image002.jpg@01DAFDE2.7C881420] Abstract: Cerebrovascular diseases rank as the second leading cause of death globally, resulting in 6.2 million fatalities annually. These conditions disrupt blood flow in the brain due to vessel narrowing (stenosis), clot formation (thrombosis), artery blockage (embolism), or vessel rupture (hemorrhage). Among cerebrovascular diseases, stroke and aneurysm are the most prevalent. Stroke occurs when a blood clot obstructs an artery, impeding cerebral circulation, while an aneurysm involves the dilation of vessel walls, which can rupture if untreated. Advancements in endovascular therapies have improved the safety and efficiency of treating these conditions compared to traditional surgical methods. Neurointerventionalists can now perform minimally invasive procedures using catheters, reducing both procedure time and recovery periods. Despite these advancements in endovascular therapies, significant challenges still contribute to complications during these procedures. In this study, we introduce two catheter innovations designed to enhance the treatment of stroke and aneurysm. Mechanical thrombectomy is an endovascular therapy that employs an aspiration catheter to remove the blood clot responsible for a stroke. However, successful clot removal on the first attempt occurs in less than 25% of patients, leading to longer procedure times and reduced survival rates. To address this, we developed a passive clot-trapping microstructure at the tip of aspiration catheters, designed to increase the force applied during clot extraction. Another endovascular therapy, aneurysm embolization, involves using a detachable coil to fill the aneurysm sac, thereby reducing the risk of rupture. However, this method has been associated with long-term complications, including incomplete aneurysmal occlusion and aneurysm recurrence. To improve outcomes, we are developing a packaging-delivery device that utilizes a novel shape memory polymer, offering a patient-specific approach to aneurysm embolization therapy. These innovations have the potential to significantly improve the effectiveness and safety of stroke and aneurysm treatments, leading to better patient outcomes.
