Mon., March 14 – Friday, March 18 – Spring Break! (no classes)
Tues., March 15 – MJIS air handling shutdown, beginning at 7:30 AM and lasting until approx. 3:00 PM for preventative maintenance of the building’s air systems. This includes air ventilation supplies to all public, classroom and research areas, including chemical fume hoods. There should be NO chemicals used anywhere! All chemical fume hood activity should terminate by 5 PM Monday March 14th. You must make sure all chemical containers are sealed at that time. Chemical fume hoods will have notices posted - do not resume activity until BME staff have verified that work is complete, and have removed postings. ALSO – MJIS chilled water shutdown will occur the same day from 7:00 am until 8:00 am. This effects MJIS, MRGN, MANN, BIND, BRK, FLEX, DLR, HOCK and HLAB.
Tues., March 15 – Campuswide tornado drill, 10:15 a.m. The test is part of the National Weather Service’s Severe Weather Preparedness Week (March 13-19), as designated by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb. The National Weather Service, in conjunction with statewide agencies, will test communication systems around the state. As part of Purdue’s test, Purdue ALERT will be activated at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday. The layers that will be activated include the All Hazard Outdoor Emergency Warning Sirens (intended to warn those outdoors only), text messaging, Twitter (@purdueemergency), desktop popup alert, alert beacons in some large classrooms, some digital signs and the Boiler TV Emergency Alerting System.

Virtual Judges needed for the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair, March 9-21
Hello! Would you be willing to act as a virtual judge at the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair? If you are receiving this message, it means you are eligible to volunteer as a judge in the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair in March 2022. This year, we have over 200 young experimentalists (5-12 graders) eagerly awaiting a chance to share their projects with you. The fair is only a few weeks away, so right now they are working hard on their projects. Students are going the extra mile this year to prepare virtual presentations, and having many judges from a variety of disciplines helps us award prizes most fairly to deserving projects. That’s where you come in.
Students will be submitting their work in a brief, 7-10 slide powerpoint, along with a 30 second introduction and optional narration. If you sign up to judge you will be assigned about 10 projects to score, which should take 2-3 hours at most, and will need to submit feedback through a google form. Judging will occur in two sets based on age group, and you may participate in either one or both sets according to your availability. The judging materials are made available on the morning of the first day, and we ask that you submit your responses by midnight on the final day. The dates for judging rounds are as follows: Senior (grades 9-12): March 9-18; Junior (grades 5-8): March 9-21

WOMEN’S GLOBAL HEALTH INSTITUTE & THE CATHERINE PEACHEY FUND Request for Proposals on Breast Cancer Research
Proposal Deadline: March 21, 2022
Funds Available: $15,000
The Purdue Women’s Global Health Institute (WGHI) together with the Catherine Peachey Fund are pleased to announce a request for proposals of outstanding scientific merit for research focused on breast cancer. Proposals from a variety of disciplines, proposals addressing prevention and early detection, or proposals having potential collaborations with clinicians or other collaborations outside Purdue are welcome. The funded project is expected to gather preliminary data to submit competitive applications to external funding agencies, or to seek support from an outside organization (e.g. companies, foundations, etc.) for continuation of the research.
Funding: The research team may request up to $15,000.
Eligibility: The PIs must be tenured/tenure-track, research, or clinical faculty at or above the assistant professor rank on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University.

“Engineering approaches to analyze tumor-associated ECM dynamics,” Claudia Fischbach-Teschl, Ph.D., Stanley Bryer 1946 Professor of Biomedical Engineering, Cornell University
Abstract: Microenvironmental conditions contribute to the pathogenesis of cancer and include altered cellular composition, extracellular matrix (ECM) deposition, and mechanical cues. However, our understanding of the specific mechanisms by which these microenvironmental perturbations impact the development, progression, and therapy response of cancer is relatively limited. More intricate models are needed to better understand the complex biochemical and biophysical interactions that drive tumor initiation, growth, metastasis, metabolic adaptation, and immune evasion. The fields of biomaterials and tissue engineering provide increasingly sophisticated tools and strategies to recapitulate and monitor relevant properties of tumor-microenvironment interactions. These approaches not only bear tremendous potential to advance our current understanding of cancer, but are also increasingly explored for more clinically relevant drug testing. Indeed, combining patient-specific cells with engineered culture systems promises to enhance the predictive power of precision medicine pipelines. This talk will highlight specific examples of how the microenvironment regulates the highly dynamic nature of cancer and will outline opportunities and challenges of the field of tumor engineering.
Bio: Claudia Fischbach-Teschl is the Stanley Bryer 1946 Professor of Biomedical Engineering at Cornell University, Director of Cornell’s Physical Sciences Oncology Center (PSOC) on the Physics of Cancer Metabolism, and Associate Director of Cornell Nanoscale Science and Engineering Facility (CNF). She received her Ph.D. in Pharmaceutical Technology from the University of Regensburg, Germany and conducted her postdoctoral work at Harvard University in the Division of Engineering and Applied Sciences. She became a faculty member at Cornell in 2007 where she utilizes engineering tools and strategies to gain a better understanding of how tumor-microenvironment interactions regulate cancer development, progression, and therapy resistance with a focus on cell-ECM interactions. She is a fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE), the Biomedical Engineering Society, and the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Germany. She served on the Tumor Microenvironment study section, is a Senior Editor of Cancer Research and serves on the Editorial Board of the ACS journal Biomaterials Science and Engineering and Tissue Engineering. She is an advocate for interdisciplinary cancer research (e.g. as Chair of the 2019 Gordon Conference on the ‘Physical Science of Cancer’) and has written Op-Ed articles on this topic including in Scientific American.

Abstract: In recent years, identifying risks factors associated with cognitive decline (occurring at 46–60 years) and defining mechanisms behind clinically visible damage to the brain (occurring at 60–90 years) has garnered attention from researchers and physicians. Due to the inability of clinical treatment to reverse the deleterious effects of damage to the brain, specifically in the form of white matter lesions, emphasis is heavily placed on disease prevention. As the cerebral white matter is particularly sensitive to abnormal vascular pulsatility—a result of multifaceted neurovascular coupling and pressure-sensitive arterioles— this work aims to evaluate mechanisms by which hypertension and aging induce excessive pulsatility and quantify stress distributions which may correlate to common zones of white matter lesion formation. Specifically, it is hypothesized that changes in the arterial pressure waveform result in abnormal loading on the brain tissue each cardiac cycle with localization near the cerebral ventricular system, where lesions are commonly found.
To analyze this, we are developing patient-specific brain models informed by time-resolved MRI to compare mechanical stress/strain profiles in an elderly cohort across various degrees of white matter damage, cognitive state, and cardiovascular health. This model may provide insights into the spatiotemporal patterns of stress/strain that are indicative of progression to white matter damage on a patient-specific basis. Identification of biomarkers of neurodegeneration observable in mid-life (i.e., 46–60 years) will provide researchers with a larger window of opportunity to develop treatments and inform clinical management of risk factors before the damage manifests in irreversible cognitive deficit.

Raising A Resilient Scientist Workshop Series
(Message from Sharon Milgram, Director, NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education): Over the last year I have interacted with many trainees across the U.S. as part of the NIH Becoming a Resilient Scientist series<https://www.training.nih.gov/nih_becoming_a_resilient_scientist_series>. After carefully considering input from students, postdocs, faculty and program administrators who participated in the program, I have decided to offer a series, RAISING A RESILIENT SCIENTIST<https://www.training.nih.gov/workshops_and_trainings_for_extramural_princip…>, for faculty and administrators who mentor students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences. The goal of the Raising a Resilient Scientist series is to promote the mental health and well-being of the academic research community by supporting faculty and administrators to develop self-management, relationship-management, and mentoring skills. A variety of topics will be covered with a specific focus on communication and shared problem-solving to help trainees deal with the inevitable setbacks experienced in high knowledge environments. There will be five units in the series; each unit will consist of a 75-minute lecture, which can be watched in real-time or asynchronously, followed by a 1-hour facilitated discussion with peers. There will be two opportunities for participation in the small groups following each webinar. There is no charge for participation, but advanced registration is required. Purdue’s College of Engineering (COE) Student Entrepreneur Incubator Program is an award to guide an Engineering student (undergraduate or graduate) to move the student's startups to market. The primary purpose of this program is to build a minimum viable product (MVP) for demonstration after the completion of this program and become ready to raise seed funds. If you work with a postdoc that has made a difference in your academic career and models the attributes of what we think great mentors should be, please consider nominating them for this inaugural award. Postdocs dedicate a great deal of time and energy in mentoring other postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduates whether this is in the lab, field, or classroom. Anyone can nominate a postdoc for this award (i.e., graduate students, undergraduates, staff, faculty, or other postdocs). Please notice that the process for the postdoc award is different from the graduate student award. Please follow all directions given below.
If you would like to nominate someone, write a nomination letter that gives an example (or many) of how this postdoc has impacted you or others as a mentor. Mentoring can be related to research design and analysis, career and professional advice, or personal guidance. Please include the department(s) along with the program, lab group, or center in which they work. Submissions should be in a letter of 250-500 words and can be submitted by students, postdocs, faculty or staff. Collaboration on letters is welcome.
The nominated postdoc will be required to submit a mentorship statement that that describes their roles and commitment to serving as a mentor in 500 words or less, which can be sent to Lisa at lnielse@purdue or submitted along with the nomination letter before the nomination deadline. Nominations are not complete without the mentorship statement from the nominee. The Council of Graduate Schools defines mentoring as: “… a more senior individual who provides career and psychosocial support to a junior member of a given organization. Mentorships center on an emotional commitment, which focuses on the protégé’s personal and professional growth. “
Nominations are due by 5 pm on Friday, April 8, 2022. The winner will be announced on April 15 and they will be recognized at the Graduate School Awards Banquet on May 11th. The winner will receive an award of $1,500. Winners will be notified by email and posted to the Graduate School Website.

Tues., March 15 - MJIS air handling shutdown, beginning at 7:30 AM and lasting until approx. 3:00 PM for preventative maintenance of the building's air systems. This includes air ventilation supplies to all public, classroom and research areas, including chemical fume hoods. There should be NO chemicals used anywhere! All chemical fume hood activity should terminate by 5 PM Monday March 14th. You must make sure all chemical containers are sealed at that time. Chemical fume hoods will have notices posted - do not resume activity until BME staff have verified that work is complete, and have removed postings.
ALSO (JUST RECEIVED) - MJIS chilled water shutdown will occur the same day from 7:00 am until 8:00 am. This effects MJIS, MRGN, MANN, BIND, BRK, FLEX, DLR, HOCK and HLAB.
If that wasn't enough, don't forget to change your clocks this Sunday... you need to "spring forward" an hour, meaning you'll get one less hour of sleep!

Although many of you will not be on campus next week, we wanted you to be aware of a very important drill that will be occurring next Tuesday (March 15). The university will be having a campuswide tornado drill. Although we will not be organizing a formal drill, we would like everyone to stop for a moment and ask yourselves "in the event of a tornado, do I know what to do? Do I know where to go?" A moment's forethought and a little planning can go a long way toward saving lives. So stop, think, and plan for what you would do in the event of a real emergency.
(The answer to "where do I go" in MJIS is to the lowest level (basement).)
Campuswide tornado drill set for Tuesday (March 15)
WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - Purdue University's Emergency Preparedness and Planning Office will offer a campuswide voluntary tornado drill and conduct a test of the Purdue ALERT at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday (March 15).
The test is part of the National Weather Service's Severe Weather Preparedness Week (March 13-19), as designated by Indiana Gov. Eric Holcomb. The National Weather Service, in conjunction with statewide agencies, will test communication systems around the state.
As part of Purdue's test, Purdue ALERT will be activated at 10:15 a.m. Tuesday. The layers that will be activated include the All Hazard Outdoor Emergency Warning Sirens (intended to warn those outdoors only), text messaging, Twitter (@purdueemergency), desktop popup alert, alert beacons in some large classrooms, some digital signs and the Boiler TV Emergency Alerting System. The voluntary drill exercise plan can be found on the Emergency Preparedness and Planning website<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/emergency-preparedness/docs/tornado-drill-expla…>. If severe weather is forecasted that day, the special test will be canceled.
To participate in the voluntary drill, building deputies and other building leaders are encouraged to practice and test their building emergency plans by organizing a shelter-in-place drill. Such a drill is designed to ensure that building occupants know what to do in an emergency, ensure that there is adequate space in shelter-in-place locations and test the functionality of weather radios, computers and other communication devices.
Purdue is located in the county with the highest number of reported tornado touchdowns in the state, so even if a tornado warning shelter-in-place drill is not possible, building occupants should take a few minutes to review their building emergency plan<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/emergency-preparedness/emergency-plans/bep/inde…>. They should also familiarize themselves with their building's shelter-in-place locations and review the severe weather tornadoes and thunderstorm procedures published by Purdue's Environmental Health and Public Safety office. The Purdue Applied Research Institute – Global Development and Innovation Division (PARI-GDI) has an immediate part-time (20 hours per week) opening for an internship beginning March 2022. This remote position has the opportunity to grow into a full-time role following graduation.
The Purdue Applied Research Institute (PARI) is a new and significant driving force for the University to share its innovative research capabilities. As the non-profit applied research arm of Purdue University, PARI aims to deliver innovative solutions for Purdue’s partners in the public, private and non-profit sectors. PARI will manage sponsored research expenditures that fall into three divisions: National Security and Technology, Global Development and Innovation (GDI), and Technology Innovation, including the Digital Innovation in Agri-Food Systems Laboratory (DIAL). This internship is specifically and only for PARI-GDI’s needs. Through PARI-GDI, experts in applied and translational research will play a greater role in the development and deployment of solutions that are critical to overcoming global challenges. PARI-GDI works closely with other departments and centers at Purdue University focused on international development such as: The Shah Family Innovation Lab, International Programs in Agriculture, Purdue Peace Project, among others.
The student will work with PARI-GDI to help advance the organization’s goals through identifying funding opportunities (business development), Purdue students/faculty/staff expertise to support program delivery, and support day-to-day operations of PARI-GDI staff. The ideal candidate is a Purdue student who has a passion for international development, identifies as a global citizen, and is comfortable working on global teams.
Responsibilities:
⦁ Conduct research, draft documents, facilitate meetings and special events, and, attend program discussions internally at PARI-GDI, Purdue and externally.
⦁ Help communicate information, verbally and in writing, to a variety of audiences.
⦁ Help identify, track and pursue funding opportunities and contribute to proposal writing efforts.
⦁ Organize on and off-campus events for students, faculty and staff and external partners as needed.
⦁ Support PARI-GDI operations and programmatic efforts: perform qualitative and quantitative data analysis, conduct market research, and identify Purdue expertise.
⦁ Support PARI-GDI daily operations: participate in meetings, help complete action items, draft communication documents for internal and external audiences, and perform other tasks as assigned.
Eligibility:
⦁ Are on-campus for the next calendar year (i.e. you are not completing your degree in 2022)
⦁ Are interested in international development, international education and climate change.
⦁ Previous experience working on international work/research teams/projects, or other international experience is highly preferred.

The Academic Regulations require that my office implement a procedure to inform faculty and instructors-of-record each semester of the regulations governing “end-of-semester” examinations and activities, which can be found in the university catalog<https://maillinks.purdue.edu/t/42750524/1144401912/88902869/0/100546/?x=67c…> (University Senate Document 84-12, March 25, 1985) and are included in full at the end of this memo for your convenience.
Of particular note:
* Each class will be scheduled for a two-hour meeting during the final examination period.
* If no educational purpose will be served by any type of meeting during the 16th week [i.e. the final examination period] because the educational objectives of the course have been achieved, a department may dismiss this class meeting during the 16th week.
* No student shall be required to take more than two examinations on one day.
* Students scheduled for more than two examinations in one calendar day are entitled to reschedule any examinations in excess of two.
* No examination or quiz may be given during the week (three days in summer session) preceding the final examination period of the semester (examinations for laboratory, intensive, or minicourses excluded).
* Comprehensive final examinations (examinations for laboratory, intensive or minicourses excluded) are prohibited except during the regular final examination periods of the last week of the semester.

Graduate Programs Update
On March 2 the Weldon BME Graduate Committee held a Faculty Open Forum on BME Grad Program Milestones. The forum allowed the committee to share with faculty where we are in the process of revising the milestones and facilitate discussion. Ten faculty members attended the meeting in person and five via Zoom. Much feedback has already been collected from faculty and grad students (via BMEGSA Exec board – contact them with input if you are a grad student) via a Qualtrics survey which is still open at https://purdue.ca1.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_e5qloUUcTKAb7Bs. Abstract: For centuries now, health care has centered around episodes of care that primarily occur when a person feels unwell enough to seek care. Historically, the care that person receives has been determined by multiple factors, most out of their control: 1) The local availability of affordable systems of care with the diagnostic and therapeutic tools needed, 2) The reachable caregiver’s perceptions of what might be causing that person’s symptoms, and 3) How well the existing evidence helping guide therapeutic decision-making happens to fit that person’s multiple unique characteristics.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how these historical practices fall well-short for too many in our nation and across the globe, including bringing long-overdue attention to deeply entrenched health disparities. On a more positive note, the enormous volume of problems surfaced by the pandemic forced the rapid acceleration of innovative solutions, many enabled through a wide range of novel digital health technologies. Early findings from this work provide promising evidence of the value of individualized, continuous monitoring for improving outcomes in a rapidly scalable manner. Translating these promising digital tools into actual health solutions is a major challenge. New systems of care, built around the individual, and using the capabilities that digital technologies allow, are what is needed. Creating these new systems requires a strong, ongoing collaboration between engineers, data scientists, computer scientists, behavioral scientists, and healthcare providers with a singular focus on creating solutions that can improve the health of all individuals.
In this seminar, I will present how recent COVID-related research demonstrates how digital health technologies can enable individualized care, and discuss a path forward for re-engineering health care.
Bio: Dr. Steinhubl is a career-long clinician-scientist and the founding Director of Digital Medicine at Scripps Research’s Translational Institute. In 2021 he transitioned part-time to physIQ, a healthcare data analytics start-up as their Chief Medical Officer. He also remains clinically active as a cardiologist for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. He received his undergraduate training in chemical engineering at Purdue University, medical degree at St. Louis University and cardiology training at the Cleveland Clinic. His recent research has focused on the implementation of clinical programs built specifically around the novel capabilities of digital technologies, especially those made possible through combining novel sensor technologies and AI-based insights to provide personalized, real-time analytics to identify individual changes in health.
Steve has been the principal investigator of dozens of nationwide and global clinical trials, has published over 280 peer-reviewed articles and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Nature Partner Journal - Digital Medicine. BME Faculty and Faculty with labs in MJIS: It is again time for us to complete our ISP (Integrated Safety Plan) documentation for REM. It covers all BME labs and occupied space in MJIS. We also need to cover areas in other buildings assigned to BME Faculty. Most of the forms can be completed by anyone who regularly works in your lab but the documents must be signed by the PI. If you are new to this process or need help in any way, please contact Susan Hardy or me, we are glad to help.

Please start with item 1, The ISP self-audit checklist these need to be returned to Susan or me by Monday, March 7. Remaining items should be completed by Monday, March 14. This schedule will allow us to arrange the walkthrough (inspection of facilities and documentation) for early December. Abstract: “Miniaturization of technologies to micro and nanoscale offers numerous advantages for diagnostic and therapeutic applications. When compared to their macroscale counterparts, micro and nanosystems are more portable, less invasive and less costly. These systems can facilitate rapid, sensitive and high throughput detection of abnormalities, help track disease progression, reduce sample consumption and improve therapeutic efficacy of drug delivery while decreasing toxicity. Thus, there is clearly a critical need to create innovative micro and nanoscale tools that can open up new possibilities in detection and treatment of diseases. The overall objective of this work is to develop novel natural and synthetic polymer-based micro and nanotechnologies that could help enhance diagnostic and therapeutic patient outcomes. First, we developed a stable and echogenic nanoparticle ultrasound contrast agent for potential applications in diagnostic extravascular tumor imaging and targeted therapies. Then, we created a polymer blend microparticle-based abuse-deterrent formulation to deter smoking of common prescription opioids. Our next step is to design a tumbling magnetic microrobot system with diagnostic capabilities for applications in cancer precision diagnostics.”

“Stromal disruption and cell engineering strategies to enhance distribution of cytotoxic T cells,” Paolo Provenzano, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Masonic Cancer Center, University of Minnesota
Abstract: Epithelial cancers, or carcinomas, behave like a complex “organ” and are comprised of multiple cell populations, including primary carcinoma cells, stromal fibroblasts, immune cells, endothelial cells, and structural and signaling components such as the stromal extracellular matrix (ECM). In this complex microenvironment, cells encounter a multitude of coordinated, simultaneously active, stimuli that are biochemical, structural, and mechanical in nature. The presence of these elements is neither random nor uniform across the tumor. Rather, these elements and the dynamic interactions among them evolve coordinately during tumor progression, conspiring to promote and sustain the carcinoma and contributing to its ability to resist molecular and immune therapies. As such, here recent findings elucidating how mechanical and architectural cues in tumor microenvironments contribute to therapeutic resistance will be presented. We show how complex stromal dynamics can limit transport of small molecule therapies and suppress anti-tumor immunity and immune therapies, and will present findings highlighting the utility of stroma targeting therapies and/or engineered T cell therapies to overcome physical barriers in solid tumors.
Bio: Paolo Provenzano is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota. He is a project leader and executive committee member of the NCI-designated University of Minnesota Physical Sciences in Oncology Center and Director of the Center for Multiparametric Imaging of Tumor Immune Microenvironments (C-MITIE). He was also an American Cancer Society Research Scholar and a University of Minnesota Masonic Scholar. Paolo’s current research interests center on 1) defining how complex physical and chemical interactions drive cancer progression to metastasis, 2) developing novel therapeutic strategies to combat disease by re-engineering tumor microenvironments, and 3) employing rationale engineering strategies to design cell-based therapeutics. He has published more than 55 journal articles with more than 11,000 citations and an h-index of 34. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, he was a DOD-CDMRP Breast Cancer Research Program postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin with Dr. Patricia Keely where he helped pioneer the field of cancer cell mechanobiology and live carcinoma optical imaging. Following my postdoctoral training he transitioned these studies to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

BME Bytes, Wednesday, March 9, 1:30 p.m., MJIS 1083. Antonia Susnjar (Advisor: J. Rispoli) will present “Clinical Applications of Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy.” Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has provided an enormous advancement in diagnostic accuracy by allowing a comprehensive evaluation of early soft tissue transformations while avoiding the exposure to potentially dangerous ionizing radiation. While conventional MRI modalities used are beneficial and sensitive for detecting macroscopic changes, they are not suitable for revealing abnormalities before any visible changes in anatomy and physiology occur. Complementary to the MRI, magnetic resonance spectroscopy (MRS) provides unique information about the biochemical composition of the human body by providing a spectrum arraying different types and quantity of chemicals in the brain or other organs. The applications of MRS to investigate metabolic window on a wide range of biochemical processes are extremely diverse. In this presentation, I will talk about several ongoing studies conducted at the Purdue MRI facility in which MRS is utilized to investigate composition and function of human brain in various maladies such as psychiatric and neurological disorders or traumatic brain injury.

Virtual Judges needed for the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair, March 9-21
Hello! Would you be willing to act as a virtual judge at the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair? If you are receiving this message, it means you are eligible to volunteer as a judge in the 2022 Lafayette Regional Science and Engineering Fair in March 2022. This year, we have over 200 young experimentalists (5-12 graders) eagerly awaiting a chance to share their projects with you. The fair is only a few weeks away, so right now they are working hard on their projects. Students are going the extra mile this year to prepare virtual presentations, and having many judges from a variety of disciplines helps us award prizes most fairly to deserving projects. That’s where you come in.
Students will be submitting their work in a brief, 7-10 slide powerpoint, along with a 30 second introduction and optional narration. If you sign up to judge you will be assigned about 10 projects to score, which should take 2-3 hours at most, and will need to submit feedback through a google form. Judging will occur in two sets based on age group, and you may participate in either one or both sets according to your availability. The judging materials are made available on the morning of the first day, and we ask that you submit your responses by midnight on the final day. Summer Mentoring Circles - We need your help - come mentor the next generation of your academic colleagues! The CoE Office of Graduate Education and the Engineering Academic Career Club (EACC<https://boilerlink.purdue.edu/organization/eacc>) is running Summer Mentoring Circles. Now in its fourth iteration, this program aims to help graduate students and postdocs identify action steps towards future faculty careers.
What: Mentoring Circles will be made of two professors and 4-6 graduate students or postdocs. EACC provides group circles with sample schedule, recommended discussion topics, room reservations and technology support. Your role is to come and share your experiences and recommendations.
When: Meet twice a month for 1hr from May to August (8 meetings total, dates below).

WOMEN’S GLOBAL HEALTH INSTITUTE & THE CATHERINE PEACHEY FUND Request for Proposals on Breast Cancer Research
Proposal Deadline: March 21, 2022
Funds Available: $15,000
The Purdue Women’s Global Health Institute (WGHI) together with the Catherine Peachey Fund are pleased to announce a request for proposals of outstanding scientific merit for research focused on breast cancer. Proposals from a variety of disciplines, proposals addressing prevention and early detection, or proposals having potential collaborations with clinicians or other collaborations outside Purdue are welcome. The funded project is expected to gather preliminary data to submit competitive applications to external funding agencies, or to seek support from an outside organization (e.g. companies, foundations, etc.) for continuation of the research.
Funding: The research team may request up to $15,000.
Eligibility: The PIs must be tenured/tenure-track, research, or clinical faculty at or above the assistant professor rank on the West Lafayette campus of Purdue University.

Mentorships center on an emotional commitment, which focuses on the protégé’s personal and professional growth. “
The Graduate School wants to acknowledge the essential role graduate students play in our research, teaching, and engagement missions at Purdue University. If you work with a graduate student that has made a difference in your academic career and models the attributes of what we think great mentors should be, please consider encouraging them to apply for this award. Graduate students dedicate a great deal of time and energy in mentoring other colleagues, and undergraduates whether in the lab, field, or classroom. Raising A Resilient Scientist Workshop Series
(Message from Sharon Milgram, Director, NIH Office of Intramural Training & Education): Over the last year I have interacted with many trainees across the U.S. as part of the NIH Becoming a Resilient Scientist series<https://www.training.nih.gov/nih_becoming_a_resilient_scientist_series>. After carefully considering input from students, postdocs, faculty and program administrators who participated in the program, I have decided to offer a series, RAISING A RESILIENT SCIENTIST<https://www.training.nih.gov/workshops_and_trainings_for_extramural_princip…>, for faculty and administrators who mentor students and postdoctoral fellows in the biomedical, behavioral, and social sciences. The goal of the Raising a Resilient Scientist series is to promote the mental health and well-being of the academic research community by supporting faculty and administrators to develop self-management, relationship-management, and mentoring skills. A variety of topics will be covered with a specific focus on communication and shared problem-solving to help trainees deal with the inevitable setbacks experienced in high knowledge environments. There will be five units in the series; each unit will consist of a 75-minute lecture, which can be watched in real-time or asynchronously, followed by a 1-hour facilitated discussion with peers. There will be two opportunities for participation in the small groups following each webinar. There is no charge for participation, but advanced registration is required. Purdue’s College of Engineering (COE) Student Entrepreneur Incubator Program is an award to guide an Engineering student (undergraduate or graduate) to move the student's startups to market. The primary purpose of this program is to build a minimum viable product (MVP) for demonstration after the completion of this program and become ready to raise seed funds. Applications for 2022 Spring semester are accepted from now until the program is full or March 31, 2022. The program begins May 16 and ends on August 5. Please notice that the process for the postdoc award is different from the graduate student award. Please follow all directions given below.
If you would like to nominate someone, write a nomination letter that gives an example (or many) of how this postdoc has impacted you or others as a mentor. Mentoring can be related to research design and analysis, career and professional advice, or personal guidance. Please include the department(s) along with the program, lab group, or center in which they work. Submissions should be in a letter of 250-500 words and can be submitted by students, postdocs, faculty or staff. Collaboration on letters is welcome.

Stromal disruption and cell engineering strategies
to enhance distribution of cytotoxic T cells

Abstract: Epithelial cancers, or carcinomas, behave like a complex "organ" and are comprised of multiple cell populations, including primary carcinoma cells, stromal fibroblasts, immune cells, endothelial cells, and structural and signaling components such as the stromal extracellular matrix (ECM). In this complex microenvironment, cells encounter a multitude of coordinated, simultaneously active, stimuli that are biochemical, structural, and mechanical in nature. The presence of these elements is neither random nor uniform across the tumor. Rather, these elements and the dynamic interactions among them evolve coordinately during tumor progression, conspiring to promote and sustain the carcinoma and contributing to its ability to resist molecular and immune therapies. As such, here recent findings elucidating how mechanical and architectural cues in tumor microenvironments contribute to therapeutic resistance will be presented. We show how complex stromal dynamics can limit transport of small molecule therapies and suppress anti-tumor immunity and immune therapies, and will present findings highlighting the utility of stroma targeting therapies and/or engineered T cell therapies to overcome physical barriers in solid tumors.
Bio: Paolo Provenzano is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biomedical Engineering and the Masonic Cancer Center at the University of Minnesota. He is a project leader and executive committee member of the NCI-designated University of Minnesota Physical Sciences in Oncology Center and Director of the Center for Multiparametric Imaging of Tumor Immune Microenvironments (C-MITIE). He was also an American Cancer Society Research Scholar and a University of Minnesota Masonic Scholar. Paolo's current research interests center on 1) defining how complex physical and chemical interactions drive cancer progression to metastasis, 2) developing novel therapeutic strategies to combat disease by re-engineering tumor microenvironments, and 3) employing rationale engineering strategies to design cell-based therapeutics. He has published more than 55 journal articles with more than 11,000 citations and an h-index of 34. Prior to joining the University of Minnesota, he was a DOD-CDMRP Breast Cancer Research Program postdoctoral fellow at the University of Wisconsin with Dr. Patricia Keely where he helped pioneer the field of cancer cell mechanobiology and live carcinoma optical imaging. Following my postdoctoral training he transitioned these studies to the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center in Seattle to develop novel therapeutic strategies.

Re-Engineering Health Care Around the Individual:
A Path Forward to Improve All Lives

Abstract: For centuries now, health care has centered around episodes of care that primarily occur when a person feels unwell enough to seek care. Historically, the care that person receives has been determined by multiple factors, most out of their control: 1) The local availability of affordable systems of care with the diagnostic and therapeutic tools needed, 2) The reachable caregiver's perceptions of what might be causing that person's symptoms, and 3) How well the existing evidence helping guide therapeutic decision-making happens to fit that person's multiple unique characteristics.
The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted how these historical practices fall well-short for too many in our nation and across the globe, including bringing long-overdue attention to deeply entrenched health disparities. On a more positive note, the enormous volume of problems surfaced by the pandemic forced the rapid acceleration of innovative solutions, many enabled through a wide range of novel digital health technologies. Early findings from this work provide promising evidence of the value of individualized, continuous monitoring for improving outcomes in a rapidly scalable manner. Translating these promising digital tools into actual health solutions is a major challenge. New systems of care, built around the individual, and using the capabilities that digital technologies allow, are what is needed. Creating these new systems requires a strong, ongoing collaboration between engineers, data scientists, computer scientists, behavioral scientists, and healthcare providers with a singular focus on creating solutions that can improve the health of all individuals.
In this seminar, I will present how recent COVID-related research demonstrates how digital health technologies can enable individualized care, and discuss a path forward for re-engineering health care.
Bio: Dr. Steinhubl is a career-long clinician-scientist and the founding Director of Digital Medicine at Scripps Research's Translational Institute. In 2021 he transitioned part-time to physIQ, a healthcare data analytics start-up as their Chief Medical Officer. He also remains clinically active as a cardiologist for the Alaska Native Tribal Health Consortium. He received his undergraduate training in chemical engineering at Purdue University, medical degree at St. Louis University and cardiology training at the Cleveland Clinic. His recent research has focused on the implementation of clinical programs built specifically around the novel capabilities of digital technologies, especially those made possible through combining novel sensor technologies and AI-based insights to provide personalized, real-time analytics to identify individual changes in health.
Steve has been the principal investigator of dozens of nationwide and global clinical trials, has published over 280 peer-reviewed articles and was the founding Editor-in-Chief of Nature Partner Journal - Digital Medicine.
