She is also the recipient of a Laboratory Directed Research and Development Early Career Award at Sandia National Laboratories. ******* ******* "Bioengineering and National Security: Engineering Photosynthetic Microorganisms for Energy Security & Developing Biosensors for Nuclear Security" Tuesday, October 15, 2019 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium - Abstract: The mission of Sandia National Laboratories is to develop advanced technologies to ensure global peace. My laboratory seeks to address national security issues with bioengineering, and my research focuses on two main areas: engineering photosynthetic microorganisms for energy security and developing biosensors for nuclear security. Energy security is a key component of national security both domestically and abroad. The transportation and chemical industries are reliant on petroleum products, which are a major contributor to climate change and a finite resource. Photosynthetic microorganisms (algae and cyanobacteria) use sunlight to fix carbon dioxide into various organic chemicals, providing a renewable source of biofuels and biochemicals while also reducing greenhouse gas emissions. Although biomass can be directly converted into biocrude using hydrothermal liquefaction, the natural photosynthetic biomass productivities of algae and cyanobacteria are insufficient to support large-scale fuel production. My research focuses on genetic tool development and metabolic engineering of two saltwater species, Microchloropsis gaditana (alga) and Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002 (cyanobacterium), to improve biomass productivity. I will discuss the development of genetic tools for gene expression and CRISPR-Cas9 genome editing in M. gaditana along with our recent work on developing CRISPR interference and CRISPR activation tools for high-throughput screening in Synechococcus sp. PCC 7002. The rapid detection of chemicals associated with nuclear energy is critical for improving nuclear security and nuclear accident response. Nuclear energy disasters, such as the Chernobyl nuclear accident in 1986 or the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011, disperse radionuclides into the environment. While some radionuclides have a short half-life of days, others have much longer half-lives, such as the 30-year half-life of cesium-137. My laboratory develops biosensors for the detection of cesium and other elements associated with nuclear energy emissions. I will discuss protein engineering and synthetic biology efforts to develop microbial biosensors for the detection of metals, cesium, and noble gases. Purdue Alert system test today

Hello everyone, I wanted to remind you that Purdue will test the Purdue Alert layered system of notification, including sirens, today, September 26, at 10 am. This is the semi-annual test of the Purdue emergency warning notification system, that includes campus-wide emailing, text messaging, Twitter, information posted to the Campus Status page, All Hazards Outdoor Siren activation, Alertus beacons installed in large classrooms, desktop popup alerts on most classroom and lab computers, more than 200 digital signs, and Boiler TV emergency alert system activation. Although no action is required when the alert system is activated today, I wanted to remind you of our shelter-in-place procedures in case of a weather related emergency: - Calmly move to the basement of either the new or the old wing of the building. - Use one of the staircases: in the FRNY atrium, adjacent to the exit that faces Physics, adjacent to the exit facing Civil Engineering or adjacent to the exit facing the Engineering Mall. - Do not use the elevators. - Take your personal belongings with you, if possible. - Assist those who need help, if possible. - Stay in the shelter location until instructed by emergency personnel that it is safe to leave. Safety violation - electronic cigarette found in a FRNY lab

Hello everyone, I learned over the weekend that an electronic cigarette (Juul) was found recently in the pocket of a visitor lab coat, in one of our shared labs that also gives access to other graduate students/researchers on campus. It was impossible to determine who brought in the electronic cigarette, or if this device was used in the lab, or not. The device, including nicotine pod, was disposed of accordingly. I wanted to take this opportunity and remind everyone that smoking, drinking, eating, and the application of cosmetics are forbidden in the lab and are considered safety violations (see Chapter 5.1.2. "General laboratory safety rules" in the Purdue Chemical Hygiene Plan (https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/programs/chp2014.pdf)) If you use one of the many types of electronic cigarettes available commercially, or traditional cigarettes or nicotine containing products, please keep them in your offices and use them only in specially designated areas outside campus (Purdue West Lafayette campus is considered a smoke-free campus). Hello everyone, I have scheduled a safety awareness training session for this coming Thursday, September 26, 2019, from 4:30 - 5:30 pm in FRNY 2107. All new employees and researchers need to have this initial safety training. If you have new people who recently joined your groups for research, they will need safety training before they can start working in our building (e.g. visitors, exchange students, post-docs, Professional Master students, etc.), please ask them to attend this session. Most of our undergraduate students already have the initial training and would need to take the online refresher when they do undergraduate research. Especially, we developed a novel generalized procedure, called as "heat-up process" for the direct synthesis of uniform-sized nanocrystals of many metals, oxides, and chalcogenides.1 For the last 10 years, our group has been focused on medical applications of various uniform-sized nanoparticles. We reported that uniform 2 nm iron oxide nanoclusters can be successfully used as T1 MRI contrast agent for high-resolution MR angiography of monkeys.2 We reported the first successful demonstration of high-resolution in vivo 3-photon imaging using biocompatible and bright Mn2+/ZnS nanocrystals.3 I will present recent advances on the fabrication of stretchable electronic & optoelectronic devices integrated with various functional nanomaterials and their applications to wearable & implantable healthcare devices. We reported graphene-hybrid electrochemical devices integrated with thermo-responsive micro-needles for the sweat-based diabetes monitoring and feedback therapy.4 We introduced electromechanical cardioplasty using an epicardial mesh made of electrically conductive and elastic Ag nanowire-rubber composite material to resemble the innate cardiac tissue and confer cardiac conduction system function.5 We report a highly sensitive and selective K+ nanosensor that can quantitatively monitor extracellular K+ concentration changes in the brains of freely moving mice experiencing epileptic seizures.6 Recently we have focused on the architecture engineering of nanomaterials for their applications to lithium ion battery, fuel cell electrocatalysts, solar cells, and thermoelectrics. We reported the first demonstration of galvanic replacement reactions in metal oxide nanocrystals, and were able to synthesize hollow nanocrystals of various multimetallic oxides including Mn3O4/γ-Fe2O3.7 We report a simple synthetic method of carbon-based hybrid cellular nanosheets loaded with SnO2 nanoparticles.8 We designed hollow anatase TiO2 nanostructures composed of interconnected ~5 nm-sized nanocrystals, which can individually reach the theoretical lithium storage limit and maintain a stable capacity during prolonged cycling.9 We present a synthesis of highly durable and active electrocatalysts based on ordered fct-PtFe nanoparticles and FeP nanoparticles coated with N-doped carbon shell.10 The effect of porous structures on the electrocatalytic activity of N-doped carbon is studied by using electrochemical analysis techniques, and the results are applied to synthesize highly active and stable Fe-N-C catalyst for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR).11 We report on the design and synthesis of highly active TiO2 photocatalysts incorporated with site-specific single copper atoms (Cu/TiO2) that exhibit reversible & cooperative photoactivation process, and enhancement of photocatalytic hydrogen generation activity.12 We synthesized multigrain nanocrystals consisting of Co3O4 nanocube cores and Mn3O4 shells. At the sharp edges of the Co3O4 nanocubes, we observed that tilt boundaries of the Mn3O4 grains exist in the form of disclinations, and we obtained a correlation between the defects and the resulting electrocatalytic behavior for the oxygen reduction reaction.13 1.
