COVID-19: New reporting procedures for illness

Dear Purdue ChE Community, Please see the attached document that was shared with me yesterday; it contains important information, step-by-step guidance compiled by the Purdue Public Health Emergency Task Force, on what steps have to be taken if ill individuals are encountered in a campus facility, like our building. These new step-by step-instructions are different from the instructions provided by the Provost last week and shared with us by Dr. Kim, Head of School, through email (see attached). Please disregard the old reporting procedure, which required having a liaison between each unit and the University (I was the liaison between our School and CoE/University), and use the new guidelines outlined in the attached document. Interested students must be available to attend the full program. Students must be nominated by their school using the attached form. The College of Engineering will list nominees by school ranking and order received and submit to the Krannert AMP program for final selection. To be nominated, please complete the attached form and submit to Ashlee Zink (astillwe(a)purdue.edu<mailto:astillwe@purdue.edu>) with the required payment by May 15, 2020. Cost may be split between the school/advisor/student. School and advisor funds may be paid by providing an appropriate account number; student payment should be submitted in the form of a check. At this time, we are still planning to hold our August 3-7 session. We will move all PhD nominations that we have already received to the August class. In light of the current priorities for the university, we are extending the PhD nomination deadline to June 1, 2020. Program Details Gain a wealth of knowledge and new skills in just five days, Monday through Friday. Although there are no graded assignments or exams in the program, participants prepare readings, cases, problem sets, and related homework to bring out key ideas. * Date: August 3-7, 2020 * Location: Krannert Center for Executive Education (KCTR) on Purdue’s West Lafayette campus * Discounted Program Fee for Purdue PhD students: $1850, which includes program instruction and materials, and daily breakfast and lunch for networking Nominations The Dean of each College/School is invited to nominate PhD students for our 2020 programs. Steam Shutdown

BE ADVISED - Tomorrow , 3-19-20 , we will be one of numerous buildings on the north end of campus that will have the steam shut off so they can install a main valve that needs to be repaired. This shut down will start at 6 am Thursday and last until Friday afternoon. High pressure steam, hot water and heating will be affected by this work. The building will maintain its temperature for a period of time but will drop gradually since outside air will continue to come in and temps are expected to be in the 60's. Since policy has dictated that most are not here this week, hopefully this will have little affect on the majority of our occupants but for those still around please take any necessary precautions that are needed. David Corti and Safety Officer Gabriela Nagy). · To the students: a number of excellent computer simulations are now on the internet and YouTube with data from the regions of China, Italy, and the USA to create models on the impact of isolation procedures/policy on the peak numbers. This virus is borne by micro-droplet aerosols that can enter ventilation systems. And on ceramic and stainless steel surfaces, the virus half-life is many hours if not days. Healthy but infected individuals that do not show any symptoms thus become “super-spreaders”. · Mass testing (supply chain issues): there are acute shortages of the reagents used by the Qiagen and Roche tests, even though the factories in Hilden, Germany and Barcelona, Spain are working around the clock. It will take some time to ramp up production in the USA (per Qiagen statement re the plant in Germantown, MD). Without the onset of large-scale testing, the duration of these self-isolation policies may be longer than the original estimates. Ogunnaike is the William L. Friend Chaired Professor of chemical engineering and, until October 1, 2019, dean of the College of Engineering at the University of Delaware. He received the B.Sc. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Lagos, Nigeria; the M.S. degree, in Statistics and the Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering both from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is the author or co-author of four books including a widely used textbook, Process Dynamics, Modeling and Control, and Random Phenomena: Fundamentals of Probability and Statistics for Engineers. His awards include the American Institute of Chemical Engineers 1998 CAST Computing Practice Award, the 2007 ISA Eckman Award, the 2008 AACC Control Engineering Practice award and the 2018 AIChE Warren K. Lewis Award. He was named a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers in 2009, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 2015; Fellow of the international Federation of Automatic Control (IFAC) in 2017; he was also elected to fellowship of the Nigerian Academy of Engineering and elected to the US National Academy of Engineering both in 2012. ******* ******* "Biological Control Systems:The Future of Engineering in Medicine" Tuesday, March 10, 2020 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY G140 - Reception at 2:30 p.m. in Henson Atrium - Abstract: The mammalian organism maintains stable, efficient and "near-optimal" performance and homeostasis in the face of external and internal perturbations via distinct biological systems ranging from the large-scale physiological (nervous, endocrine, immune, circulatory, respiratory, etc.), to the cellular (growth and proliferation regulation, DNA damage repair, etc.), and the sub-cellular (gene expression, protein synthesis, metabolite regulation, etc). "Biological Control Systems," a sub-topic of Control Theory, arises from a control engineering perspective of the function, organization, and coordination of these multi-scale biological systems and the control mechanisms that enable them to carry out their functions effectively. In this presentation, we will provide an overview of how physiological life is made possible by control; demonstrate the usefulness of a control engineering perspective of pathologies for diagnosis, design, and implementation of effective treatments-especially for precision (personalized) medicine; and hence make the case for the central role engineering will play in enabling medicine of the future.
