A test of the system will be conducted between 1-4 p.m. Friday (Nov. 4). The university has sirens at Earhart Hall, Hawkins Hall, the Heine Pharmacy Building, Purdue Village, Hilltop Apartments, the Grand Prix race track and the Physical Facilities Service Building. Friday's test is to ensure the sirens are operable and will include an activation of sirens that could last up to 30 seconds and may be noticeable on campus. However, the potential for a full, three-minute siren activation is possible. Siren system checkout and verification may require multiple tests during the time frame. If there is inclement weather, the test will be cancelled. Please disregard any siren activation during this time period; no action is necessary. If you have any questions, please contact the Emergency Preparedness Office at 4-0446.

FYI -- Michael Emberton, one of our Forney Hall custodians, suffered a heart attack last weekend. He had surgery yesterday & is in Intensive Care for the next few days. I will be mailing the card to the hospital tonight. We will be sending flowers to his home after he is released from the hospital. Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering Purdue University Engineering Approaches for Functional Nerve Regeneration Christine E. Schmidt Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering Texas Materials Institute The University of Texas at Austin Damage to spinal cord and peripheral nerve tissue can have a devastating impact on the quality of life for individuals suffering from nerve injuries. Our research is focused on analyzing and designing biomaterials that can interface with neurons and specifically stimulate and guide nerves to regenerate. These biomaterials might be required for facial and hand reconstruction or in trauma cases, and potentially could be used to aid the regeneration of damaged spinal cord. New technologies to aid nerve regeneration will ultimately require that biomaterials be designed both to physically support tissue growth as well as to elicit desired receptor-specific responses from particular cell types. One way of achieving such interactive biomaterials is with the use of natural-based biomaterials that interact favorable with the body. In particular, our research has focused on developing advanced hyaluronan-based scaffolds that can be used for peripheral and spinal nerve regeneration applications. Hyaluronic acid (HA; also known as hyaluronan) is a non-sulfated, high molecular weight, glycosaminoglycan found in all mammals and is a major component of the extracellular matrix in the nervous system. HA has been shown to play a significant role during embryonic development, extracellular matrix homeostasis, and, most importantly for our purposes, in wound healing and tissue regeneration. HA is a versatile biomaterial that has been used in a number of applications including tissue engineering scaffolds, clinical therapies, and drug delivery devices. Our group has devised novel techniques to process this sugar material into forms that can be used in therapeutic applications. For example, we are using advanced laser-based processes to create "lines" of specific proteins within the hyaluronan materials to provide physical and chemical guidance features for the individual re-growing axons. We have found that these materials facilitate neuron interactions and are thus highly promising for regenerating peripheral and spinal nerves in vivo. In a parallel approach to foster nerve regeneration, our group has developed natural tissue scaffolds termed "acellular tissue grafts" created by chemical processing of normal intact nerve tissue. These grafts are created from natural biological tissue -- human cadaver nerves -- and are chemically processed so that they do not cause an immune response and are therefore not rejected in patients. These grafts have been optimized to maintain the natural intricate architecture of the nerve pathways, and thus, they are ideal for promoting the re-growth of damaged axons across lesions. These engineered, biological nerve grafts are currently used in the clinic for peripheral nerve injuries and are being explored for spinal cord regeneration. ***Coffee and juice will be provided at West Lafayette*** Christine E. Schmidt is the B.F. Goodrich Endowed Professor of Materials Engineering in the Departments of Biomedical Engineering and Chemical Engineering at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Schmidt received her B.S. degree in Chemical Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1988 and her Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1995. She conducted postdoctoral research at MIT as an NIH Postdoctoral Fellow, joining the UT Austin faculty in 1996. Dr. Schmidt is a Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering (AIMBE) and a Fellow of the Biomedical Engineering Society (BMES), and serves on the Editorial Boards for Acta Biomaterialia, Journal of Biomedical Materials Research, Journal of Biomaterials Science, Polymer Edition, International Journal of Nanomedicine, and the Nanomedicine. She has received numerous research, teaching, and advising awards, including the American Competitiveness and Innovation (ACI) Fellowship from NSF's Division of Materials Research, the Chairmen's Distinguished Life Sciences Award by the Christopher Columbus Fellowship Foundation and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, and a Whitaker Young Investigator Award. Dr. Schmidt's research is focused on developing new biomaterials and biomaterial composites (e.g., electronic polymer composites, natural material scaffolds and processed tissues) that can be used to physically guide and stimulate regenerating nerves. In addition, her group is investigating neuron-electronic interfacing using electrically conducting polymers as a means to ultimately develop new bioprosthetics.

The project starts three tenths of a mile west of State Road 526 to just under one half mile east of US 231 in West Lafayette. Crews will restrict the right lane of westbound traffic on S.R. 26 from Northwestern Avenue to Marsteller Street. This restriction will last seven to ten days. Weather permitting, crews will then move into the eastbound lanes to begin patching. They will suspend work over the winter and begin construction again on or after April 1, 2012. The project is scheduled for completion on August 4, 2012. To avoid long traffic delays, please use an alternate route through the Chauncey Village area if possible. ---------- Lane Restriction along Aviation Drive Beginning Monday, October 31, a contractor will be completing telecommunications work along Aviation Drive at the Purdue Airport. This work is expected to be complete by the end of the week, weather permitting. Flag persons will be on site directing traffic. ---------- Lindberg Road to Reopen between Northwestern Avenue and McCormick Road Lindberg Road is expected to reopen Monday, October 31 between Northwestern Avenue and McCormick Road. The road will open to vehicles following a 4:00 p.m. Halloween party and parade that will begin near the Celery Bog Nature Area entrance at the west end of the bridge. ---------- 2-Day Road Closure Expected on McCormick Road McCormick Road from U.S. 52 to Lindberg Road is expected to be closed for two days beginning November 1. American Suburban Utilities will be installing utilities across McCormick Road just north of McCormick Place Apartments where two sharp turns in the road are located. Local travelers will be able to access their homes along this route.

If you choose to participate, you and 2 or 3 friends will go trick-or-treating, but instead of asking for candy, you'll be asking for donations for local charities. Ms. Grubbe will focus on how the lessons learned from the corporate environment have enabled her to startup, to grow, and to manage her successful consultancy. Bio: Deborah Grubbe is owner and principal of Operations and Safety Solutions, LLC, a consultancy that specializes in safety and operations troubleshooting and support. Deborah is the former Vice President of Group Safety for BP plc, which had its two safest years ever during her tenure. She was trained in the characteristics of safe operations during her 27 year career at DuPont, where she held corporate director positions in engineering, operations and safety. Deborah is a member of the NASA Aerospace Safety Advisory Panel, and served as a consultant on safety culture to the Columbia Shuttle Accident Investigation Board. Deborah currently serves on the Purdue University College of Engineering Dean's Advisory Council, and is Co Chair of the Purdue University President's Diversity Committee. .She is a member of the closure committee for the Demilitarization of the US Chemical Weapons Stockpile, and is a trustee of the National Safety Council. She is Chair of the Institute for Sustainability, and is a retired Board Member of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers. Deborah obtained a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering with Highest Distinction from Purdue University, and received a Winston Churchill Fellowship to study chemical engineering at Cambridge University in England. A native of Chicago, Illinois, she received the Purdue Distinguished Engineering Alumni Award in 2002, and, in that same year, was named "Engineer of the Year" in the State of Delaware. In 2010, Deborah received an Honorary PhD in Engineering from Purdue University.
