Keys Inventory - Action needed

Good morning, We are transitioning all of our key tracking information to a database. We have all of the forms that you filled out when you received keys, but to make sure that our information is as accurate as possible, we would like your help through a self report survey on the keys related to Forney Hall that you currently have. Please send to Darron Bennet bennetdw(a)purdue.edu<mailto:bennetdw@purdue.edu>, our student helper, an email with the following information for all Forney Hall keys you have: Room Number - characters on front of key - characters on back of key Example: For room 2150: Rm A - 76335X - 6 Additional details: For unrenovated rooms (there are only 20 or so), the "front" of the key will contain 5 numbers and occasionally a letter. For most of the building the key will look like the bottom key in the attached picture and will have 2 letters then 2 or 3 numbers. One exception to the front/back rule is the recently renovated ground floor. For those, please include the number (usually 1-20) that is in the top area of the front of the key as well as what is on the back. Jeff Siirola joins Purdue ChE as Professor of Engineering Practice

Dear Colleagues, I am delighted to inform that Dr. Jeffrey J. Siirola will join our School as Professor of Engineering Practice, starting this Fall semester, at the 50% FTE level. His responsibilities are to teach (either as lead instructor or with other faculty members) the senior capstone Design course, to be involved with the Global Policy Research Institute (GPRI) and faculty in the energy/sustainability areas, and to serve as a resource in our planning efforts in his areas of expertise, including manufacturing. His appointment is for the current AY, with the possibility to renew for at least two more years. As you are probably aware from his involvement with our School over the years, Jeff Siirola retired recently as Technology Fellow, Eastman Chemical Company. Jeff is an NAE member (elected 1994), has received many other recognitions, and served in many leadership roles, including President of AIChE in 2005. He currently serves on the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) Board of Directors and as its Secretary, is a member of the NRC Committee on Inherently Safer Chemical Processes, and serves on many prominent ChE program advisory boards. He has also served in advisory roles at Purdue: Discovery Park External Advisory Council, 2003- present ; Energy Center Advisory Board, 2007-present. Jeff also has another important connection with Purdue ChE - he is the proud father of John D. Siirola (BSChE 2000). Jeff received his BSChE degree from the University of Utah (1967) and Ph.D. (ChE) from the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1970). Along with his thesis advisor, Dale Rudd and fellow graduate student Gary Powers, he co-authored the pioneering textbook, Process Synthesis, Prentice-Hall (1973). Our School's new Director of Development - Diane Klassen

Dear Colleagues, I am very pleased to inform that Diane Klassen will join our School as Director of Development (DoD) on August 8. Diane holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology (minor - Social Work) from IUPUI, where she also completed one year of graduate studies. After a number of leadership positions in various sectors, she served as Division Director for the March of Dimes during 2006-08. She joined Purdue University as DoD for the President's Council in July 2008 and has served as DoD for the School of Aeronautics & Astronautics for the last two years. With her experience and demonstrated fund-raising skills, Diane will help our School meet the aggressive Development goals we have established. Please join me in welcoming Diane to our School! Construction inspectors and foremen use them as a mobile office, supervising road work while sheltered from the dust and blistering summer sun. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and the Indiana State Police (ISP) today joined forces to unveil the first pick-up truck converted for traffic enforcement in and near construction zones. Equipped with police lighting, sirens, radios and radar equipment, the white pick-ups will be operated by uniformed troopers on unmarked patrols. "It's not INDOT's or ISP's goal to catch motorists in the act of committing a violation, but to promote compliance with safe driving practices and reduce the number of crashes," said INDOT Chief Operations Officer Troy Woodruff. "On average four out of every five people killed in highway work zones are motorists, not highway workers." An analysis of 2010 statistics found the top causes of work zone crashes to be following too closely, improper lane change and failure to yield the right of way. Troopers in the white pick-ups will more easily spot these violations, which carry increased fines and penalties under a new state law that took effect this month. "We know people tend to drive different whether or not a marked police vehicle is present," added Major Brent Johnson, the Operations Support Division Commander of the Indiana State Police. "Our expectation now is that seeing any white pick-up truck in or near a construction zone will cause all drivers to be more attentive." At approximately $32,000 each, INDOT is purchasing the Ram 1500 trucks specifically for ISP work zone enforcement around the state. Use of the special pick-ups is in addition to traditional marked and unmarked state police vehicles, including motorcycle patrols and unmarked Mustang police vehicles.

Forney Construction Update

You are all aware that the old side of the building has major repairs going on outside, but you may not know what they are doing. Contractors are in the process of replacing the gutters and downspouts and we are finally getting a new roof on the old side of the building. Officially the project started on May 16th as they began setting up and preparing. Although the weather is extremely hot, there have been very few delays with the work since we have had little rain. In conjunction with its ongoing investigation of approaches to better align campus parking revenues with costs, the Parking and Traffic Committee recommended an increase in fines for parking violations. This approved adjustment to charges for parking violations will increase fines from $20 to $35. The last time the fee increased was in 2002. This increase is in line with fines assessed by other Big Ten universities. In addition, fees for late fine payments will increase from $3 to $10. Late fees have not been increased since they were first assessed in the 1960s. Based upon chilled water load demand experienced thus far this summer cooling season, the predicted heat and humidity levels will make control of tight climate control spaces for temperature and humidity across campus very challenging. Cooling demand control conservation measures will be necessary. Beginning late this morning chilled water load curtailment steps will start to be implemented. Staff will be monitoring cooling load demand closely and only implement steps as necessary to balance cooling demand to our limited cooling capacity. We anticipate cooling conservation measures to be in place all week if the weather holds as predicted. In order to reduce the demand placed on the chillers, please take additional steps such as: shutting off lights in unoccupied areas, turning off unnecessary/unused equipment and appliances (computers, coffee pots, etc.), lowering window shades on the sunny side of the building, etc. (Use of portable fans is appropriate to augment comfort where needed.) Motorists will encounter a lane restriction on westbound State Street as they approach Northwestern Avenue. Traffic will be shifted to the middle and left lanes of travel from Northwestern Avenue to Andrew Place. The right lane of travel will be closed. Motorists will also encounter a lane restriction on Northwestern Avenue as they approach State Street. Traffic will be shifted to the left lane of travel and parking will be removed from the west side of the road. The sidewalk on the north side of State Street will be closed from just west of Northwestern Avenue to Andrew Place for the duration of the project. The project is expected to last seven to ten days. Motorists and pedestrians are asked to use caution when traveling through the area.
