He is a graduate of UC Berkeley (2009 Ph.D. ChE) and NC State University (2004, B.S. ChE) and did post-doctoral training at KTH (2012). He is a Fellow of Science for Life Laboratory (2014), a national laboratory focusing on molecular biology, and a Novo Nordisk Fonden Ascending Investigator (2020). His research is on metabolic engineering of CO2-fixing bacteria, with focus on Calvin cycle bacteria such as cyanobacteria. The research uses systems biology methods such as proteomics to study CO2 fixation metabolism, and to guide engineering strategies for enhancing CO2 uptake and conversion. His group also develops synthetic biology tools in these strains. This same regulation can complicate metabolic engineering strategies, as pathway flux becomes restricted. However, our knowledge of such regulations is limited for most microbial strains. Here I will describe our work using recently developed proteomics. methods, such as limited proteolysis small molecule mapping (LiP-SMap) to identify metabolite-protein interactions in the proteomes of cyanobacteria and lithoautotrophic bacteria that fix CO2 using the Calvin cycle. Clustering analysis of the hundreds of detected interactions showed that some metabolites interacted in a species-specific manner, such as interactions of glucose-6-phosphate in Cupriavidus necator and of glyoxylate in Synechocystis sp PCC6803. Metabolite interactions were tested for their effects on enzyme activity with Calvin cycle enzymes fructose-1,6/sedoheptulose-1,7-bisphosphatase (F/SBPase). The Calvin cycle intermediate GAP activated both Synechocystis and Cupriavidus F/SBPase, indicating a feed-forward activation of the Calvin cycle in both photoautotrophs and chemolithoautotrophs. Lessons learned (summary of ChE safety incidents July-October) and other safety communication

Hello everyone, Please find attached a summary of the safety incidents and near misses reported to me from July 2022 to date. I hope that sharing this information with you will prevent similar situations from happening in the future. Please continue to report ALL safety incidents and near misses using the form Safety Incident/Near Miss Report<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/safety-incident…> posted on our website: https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety under "Workplace Injury Information". Recommendation: The ChE safety committee recommends that all labs using gas cylinders keep a dedicated cylinder wrench, such as the Matterson TW-5 Cylinder Handwheel Wrench in the lab, and use it in case the cylinder cap is stuck on and can't be easily removed by hand. This tool can also be used to open cylinder valves. I attach some information regarding the use of a gas cylinder wrench and more information can be found at this link: https://store.mathesongas.com/tw-series-cylinder-wrenches/ Eyewash stations in the lab need to be flushed weekly, and the completion of this task needs to be recorded/logged. Please find attached a template of a log that can be used to record the completion of this task. Please keep the log somewhere near the eye wash station as the safety committee (and REM) is checking on this during safety inspections. Any other logs are accepted, but documentation that the task was completed on a weekly basis is required. The Annual Safety Chair Meeting is scheduled for November 9, 2022, from 8 am- 11 am in Stewart Center, Room 214. Room 218 will feature a safety fair from 7:30 to 11:30 a.m. with a variety of vendor displays along with REM and public safety representatives to answer questions about safety needs. The Safety Chair Meeting is split into three sessions, with the third and final session, 10:15-11 a.m., having a laboratory theme targeting an academic research audience. This includes fighting for those with mental health challenges. The mental health numbers in our nation are staggering. * 19% of adults in America (over 47 million people) are experiencing a mental illness, and 4.55% are experiencing serious mental illness (over 1 million people). * Over 60% of youth with major depression do not receive any mental health treatment. * 11.1% of Americans with mental illness are uninsured, the second year in a row that this indicator increased since the passage of the affordable care act (ACT). * The state of Indiana is the 10th highest state with frequency of mental illness and low rates of access to care. MHA helps individuals navigate mental health challenges through offering trainings, assisting in connecting with local mental health service providers, and providing one on one peer support through their Let's Talk Program. The original parent of CMC, Cabot Corporation (the historic, 140-year-old maker of carbon and silica products) created Cabot Microelectronics in 1995 to help accelerate the push into the emerging opportunity for chemical mechanical planarization (CMP). David Li joined the new subsidiary only three years after its formation and thus had an early opportunity to make noteworthy contributions to the growth of CMC. After the spin-off of CMC as an independent company in 2000, with sales of $200M and 100 employees, CMC's then leaders identified David as a future leader of CMC, with David placed in various leadership roles to help CMC firmly establish itself as the market leader for silica slurries for polishing semiconductor wafers. Named as the President and CEO of CMC in 2015, "David Li moved quickly to streamline CMC's upper management and revamped the company's culture to instill more agility and risk-taking" (cited from a 2019 article in C&E News magazine of the American Chemical Society). This sector of the semiconductor industry was entering a period of rapid consolidation and David's first action was to acquire NexPlanar Corporation in October of 2015 to help steer CMC to the #2 position for polishing pads. By 2018, CMC had grown to over a billion in sales and its newly attained scale placed it in a position to acquire KMG Chemicals for $1.6 billion and become a major player in an even greater segment of the semiconductor materials supply chain. Recognition awards as an outstanding supplier from major companies in this industry (Samsung, Intel and IBM to name three awards), rapid organic growth and additional strategic acquisitions dramatically increased the size and scale of CMC. Ultimately, in 2021 the Board of Directors of CMC accepted a friendly $6.5 billion buy-out offer from Entegris Corporation, representing approximately a four-fold return for shareholders over David's six-year term as CEO. Robert Jr. Consultant & Professor Emeritus Purdue Military Research Institute, Purdue University & United States Military Academy Bio: Dr. Leon Robert is a recognized expert in leadership development, procedural discipline and process improvement in the oil and gas sector. He has worked extensively in the Permian Basin to improve hydraulic fracking business processes, reducing human error, and mentoring the next generation of oil and gas leaders. He had a distinguished 30-year career in the U.S. Army and is a nationally recognized scientist and educator. He has diverse leadership experience leading complex academic, operational, and scientific research and development organizations, with responsibility for setting organization vision/goals, leading change, and achieving results. His executive leadership of academic organizations, and research and development teams included senior-level engagement with multiple Department of Defense stakeholders, and with a wide variety of top-tier universities, private research labs and commercial companies. He assisted the DoD in developing the next generation "green" pyrotechnics and improved high explosive formulations. His distinguished military career included two combat tours, 8 overseas assignments, and culminated as Professor of Life Science and Head of the Department of Chemistry and Life Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point, 2011-2017. He led the 51-person academic department responsible for educating and developing future Army leaders (cadets) in the fields of Chemistry, Life Science, and Chemical Engineering. Under his leadership the Department successfully gained American Chemical Society certification of the Chemistry Program in 2013, American Board of Engineering Technology accreditation of the Chemical Engineering Program in 2015 and completed the $150M renovation and expansion of the Bartlett Hall Science Center. Leon's distinguished achievements include serving as the Vice Dean of the National Military Academy of Afghanistan in Kabul where he led, developed, and mentored 200 Afghan faculty and staff to educate 1,500 cadets in a four-year undergraduate college program, under extraordinarily challenging conditions. He professionally mentored the Dean, Director of Admissions and 12 academic department heads to improve education and administrative procedures resulting in the first ever graduating class of future Afghan Army officers. He has authored over 40 multidisciplinary peer-reviewed publications, numerous technical publications and was awarded a US patent. Thursday, October 13, 2022 3:00 p.m. - 4:15 p.m. FRNY 3059 Abstract: Dr. Leon Robert served 30+ years in the U.S. Army and visited 62 countries while serving in field units, academic assignments, overseas tours and combat deployments. His leadership in science and chemical engineering culminated in serving as Professor and Head, Department of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Life Science at the United States Military Academy at West Point. Since retiring, he has continued to serve as Consultant, Purdue Military Research Institute and bring his expertise to the Steel making and oil and gas sectors.
