Purdue Mask Policy & School Conference Room Policy

Dear All, As you all likely have seen, Purdue has changed its mask policy to only be “required in classrooms, research laboratories, and instructional spaces, as well as health care areas…” Following this change, effective today, we are in the process of changing all signage to comply with the policy. Though, out of an abundance of caution, our School has decided to keep masks required in FRNY conference rooms on the basis that they are mostly used for research group meetings, class office hours, and considering they are not very big rooms and can be used at full occupancy. The only exception to this School policy is when there is only one occupant masks are not required. Appropriate signage will be posted on all FRNY conference rooms. I thank you for all of your cooperation throughout this pandemic. It is very encouraging to see our ChE community following all public heath policies which in part has enabled us to get to this point. February 16, 2022 PURDUE TO MAKE MASKS OPTIONAL IN MANY INDOOR SPACES <https://maillinks.purdue.edu/t/42695505/1568766656/90006834/0/1003844/?x=d9…> Given that campus case numbers are dropping and severity continues to remain low, effective Friday, Feb. 18, Purdue University will make face masks optional on the West Lafayette campus, except for instructional, research and health care settings, as well as where contractually required. Purdue Athletics venues will be among the indoor spaces where masks will be considered optional. The university decision was made with the support of the Protect Purdue Medical Advisory Team after carefully evaluating campus and community factors. According to Protect Purdue Health Center data, since Jan. 1, more than 99% of positive cases at Purdue University have been reported as asymptomatic, mild or moderate, with 0 hospitalizations, as expected in a campus community as vaccinated as Purdue’s. The overall, seven-day positivity rate has fallen by 76% from a high of 21% in January to its current 5%. “Our Boilermaker students, faculty and staff continue to demonstrate just how committed they are to protecting our campus community from the spread of serious disease. We believe this is the next step toward greater normalcy based on rapidly declining national, state and campus case numbers,” says Esteban Ramirez, Protect Purdue Health Center’s chief medical officer. Masks will continue to be required in classrooms, research laboratories, and instructional spaces, as well as health care areas where there is close patient contact such as the campus COVID-19 testing center and vaccine clinic at the Co-Rec, the Center for Healthy Living, the Purdue University Student Health Center, the Purdue University Pharmacy, the Veterinary Teaching Hospital and Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (ADDL). Due to preexisting contractual obligations, Purdue Convocations will continue to require that masks be worn by all patrons for the remainder of the Spring 2022 semester at all of its events, including events sponsored by the Student Concert Committee and TEDxPurdueU. Purdue will continue to conduct routine surveillance testing at least through the month of March, including two weeks of testing after Purdue’s Spring Break. Throughout March, the Medical Advisory Team and campus leadership will review campus and community COVID-19 data with the intention to further relax Protect Purdue protocols in April, assuming conditions continue to improve. Data-driven targeted testing will continue as a response to areas where there are concerns of potential outbreaks. As always, the Protect Purdue team will be guided by the latest science and medical experts, and all rules and regulations will be subject to change. If a surge or change in case severity occurs, the masking policy and other protocols could be adjusted. Safety inspection of ALL labs and offices - NEXT WEEK

Hello everyone, In preparation for the ISP recertification with REM in March, members of the ChE Safety Committee will conduct safety inspections of ALL labs and offices, starting Monday, February 14, 2022. We will use the forms in the attached Excel workbook (form on first tab for labs, form on second tab for offices). Reports of the inspections will be sent to PIs and safety officers (for labs) and to occupants of labs (if needed). Any identified deficiencies will need to be corrected within the time specified on the forms. Instructions on how to follow up regarding correction of deficiencies will be communicated in due time. ChE Mandatory Annual Safety Refresher Training - complete NOW

Hello Everyone! It is now time to complete the online Annual Safety Refresher Training, which is required for all ChE faculty, staff, graduate students, post-doctoral research associates and visiting researchers/scholars, and then log the completion of training. You can access the training material and take the quiz on any device linked to the internet, including mobile devices. This training is also required for our School's ISP recertification with REM. Please follow the instructions below and complete this safety refresher training by the end of Monday, February 28, 2022. Instructions: 1. Part of this process is the completion of the safety self-audit of all ChE laboratories AND offices. The self-audit of offices is only needed for those offices that are physically used at this time; if you are working remotely you don't need to come to campus to complete the safety self-audit of your office. The ISP Self-Audit checklist can be found on the ChE School's website (https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety) under the "Laboratory Safety Requirements" heading (Integrated Safety Plan Self-Audit Checklist<https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/documents/forms/ispcheck.pdf>) , or on REM's website: https://www.purdue.edu/ehps/rem/isp/index.html . Please only use these forms, as they are the most up-to-date forms that are now used at University level. I also attach the most updated form, for your convenience. One form needs to be completed for EACH lab/storage area/machine shop. However, multiple offices can be included on the same form. 1. The first eight sections have universal questions that apply to every area. For self-audits of office space, only section 1-8 have to be completed. I attach the Hazard Assessment Certification for FRNY offices for your information; please answer "yes" to questions 8.1 - 8.4 for offices. 2. Sections 9 to 29 have questions related to specialized operations; research laboratories and shops should address all sections (section 1 through 29). 3. All self-audit checklists must be signed by PI/supervisor, not necessarily by the person completing the self-audit. 4. Electronic signatures are accepted on ISP self-audit forms. In addition to completing the self-audit for your labs/shop, please review and update the door posting, hazard assessment (should be placed inside the lab, near the entrance), chemical inventory (Form HCP4), and lab specific Chemical Hygiene Plan (at a minimum, the first page needs to be signed by the PI of the lab and dated within the last 6 months). They should be all accurate and dated within the last six months. If your group is keeping SDSs saved electronically, please make sure you follow the recommendations issued by the safety committee, that are listed HERE<https://engineering.purdue.edu/ChE/aboutus/safety/documents/Guidelines%20fo…>. In February, the ChE Safety Committee will perform unannounced safety inspections of all laboratories and offices and will send the inspection reports to the faculty responsible for those areas. Dear Faculty, I briefly wanted to add a reference to 3M's video on how to properly wear this particular type of N95 mask in order to create a good seal. The video is brief and is a resource there for your convenience. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2mnSy3hDHM4 I also wanted to add that these are indeed direct from the 3M manufacturer and you can rest assure they are the official and legit N95 product. Lastly, I wanted to add that since these are not individually wrapped, we are taking great care in following recommended CDC procedures on handling of them to avoid any contamination to the masks (i.e. wearing PPE like wearing clean gloves when handling the masks).
