Fume Hoods and Air Supply SHUT DOWN - ADDITION SIDE CLOSED

BE ADVISED - Tomorrow Thursday 22,2023 the addition side of the building will be closed and locked due to the work being done on the fume hoods being shut down. EHS (formerly REM ) has mandated that it be closed due to no air flow while the work occurs. I apologize for the short notice but no one will be allowed to enter. All labs should have taken the necessary precautions stated in the email I sent out Monday. Please make sure you have any items you need when you leave today. The old side of the building will not be affected and will be in normal operation. If you have any questions please contact me. It may be necessary to share this with siemens as well. Here are a couple of key things to note from the SOP; * PF and building deputy will communicate/coordinate with the labs and lab PIs the need for service and the duration of the fan shut down. * Except for emergency situations, PF personnel will post the "Shut Down Notice" on the affected chemical fume hood(s) a minimum of three days prior to the scheduled shut down. The notice should be posted in the lower, center area of the sash so that it is easily visible. The affected hood(s) will be out of service during the period indicated on the notice regardless of whether or not the fan is actually operating. If the exhaust system being serviced provides ventilation for an entire room, the "Shut Down Notice" should be placed on the door to the room. * The laboratory PI must ensure and sign off on the "Shut Down Notice" that hazardous materials have been secured, the sash remains closed and no operations/experiments, including closed systems, shall be conducted in the chemical fume hood(s) for the duration of the maintenance as indicated on the posted notice. * PF personnel will verify that all chemicals and equipment have been secured or removed from the hood and the Laboratory Personnel section of the "Shut Down Notice" has been completed before maintenance work begins. Building Issues

BE ADVISED - This email pertains to the problems occurring on the new side of the building only. Zones are working on making the repairs needed for the 3rd floor cooling that failed but I do not know the status at this time. Hopefully they will have the unit back into normal operation soon. Ground , first and second floors are being affected by techs working on the control panels for the air handlers and has thrown the balance of air supplied to the labs off. The odor that is present is due to the fume hoods exhausting out and sewer gas being pulled out of any drain traps that have dried out. Work on the control panels should be done shortly and air supply back on. It would be beneficial for all labs to pour water down every drain to make sure the traps are full so they not let any gas into the room. If you have questions please contact me. Thanks. Jeff Valley

Hello Everyone, I am glad to announce that at the ChE Safety Committee's recommendation, Dr. Corti appointed the following graduate students to serve on the ChE Safety Committee for the next two years. Their appointment started on June 1, 2023: 1. Agarwal, Shubhanshu (advised by Dr. Agrawal) 2. Akturk, Ilke (advised by Dr. Z. Nagy) 3. Bekele, Bereket (advised by Dr. Gounder) 4. Choi, Austin (advised by Dr. Pol) 5. Perez Schuster, Gabriel (advised by Dr. Wang) At the same time, on behalf of the ChE Safety Committee, I would like to thank Daniel Gribble, Apurva Pradhan, Montgomery Smith and Dhushyanth Viswanath for their exemplary service on the safety committee over the last two years. Their effort and input in the safety committee work helped increase the safety culture in our School! They will continue to serve on the safety committee this summer and help as needed with training/initiating the new members. Catherine Vincent, who was the GSO safety representative on the committee from January 2023, will continue in this role in the 2023-24 academic year; we look forward to continuing to work with her over the next year.
