The purpose is to inspire STEM teachers and students in energy sciences and engineering. This is an immersive one week program and will consist of: (1) talks by Purdue researchers and industry leaders, (2) tours, (3) hands-on activities, (4) research projects, and (5) teachers developing energy lessons. This year program will be inaugurated by former Chairman Jim Rogers, Duke Energy. We will have approximately 84 exceptionally talented high school (10/11th grades) students and secondary teachers. The Energy Academy presents an excellent opportunity to faculty for their broader impact activities. Please let us know if you would like to participate in this activity. Specifically, we are looking for faculty who have hands on activities/projects, or would like to give talk or mentor teachers/students for group projects. Also, we are interested having Purdue students (UG/Graduate) be counselors and volunteers. Hello Everyone, I am sending you this message to let you know that Jill Mears resigned her position effective January 22, 2015 and is no longer working at Purdue. It is my goal to minimize the impact on our school as much as possible, so we are working on scheduling assistance in our office. I will be coordinating with a few highly qualified account managers from other schools to work with me on faculty portfolios. We will be going through each faculty member's accounts and projections this week. Our immediate deadline is the PAR deadline of February 19th, so please be aware that we will be contacting faculty members with outstanding PARs to setup meetings to review and sign your PARs. It is also very important that anyone that has outstanding items with Jill please forward those messages or situations to me as soon as possible; please do not hesitate to send me anything that you think that I may need in managing your accounts. I will be reviewing these and ensuring that all of these items are also addressed as quickly as possible. Since we will have a few individuals from other areas assisting us in the account management, please note that you may be receiving emails from people that you may not recognize. Dear Colleagues, I’m very sorry to inform that Jim had a heart attack last night. Becky was vigilant about the symptoms and took him to IU Arnett where, owing to lack of space in the cardiac unit, he’s in their ICU. He had a catheterization procedure this morning - two arteries were 100% blocked, so they put 2 stents in. He has two more arteries that are 75% blocked but they currently plan to treat those with medication. Because of the many flu cases in the Lafayette area, they are only permitting family members to see him. I’ll keep you informed of developments as they become available. Pl keep Jim and his family in your thoughts and prayers. Arvind

New Process for Hosting International Visitors and Guests

Daniel Hirleman, Chief Corporate & Global Partnerships Officer DATE: January 20, 2015 SUBJECT: New Process for Hosting International Visitors and Guests Please disseminate this to all faculty and staff Due to Federal Export Control Regulations and Purdue’s expanded relationship with the Department of Defense and its sub-agencies, the University is augmenting existing procedures to monitor international visitors on campus and enhance security of export-controlled information and items. A process has been developed to screen all international visitors who require formal invitation from Purdue to obtain a visa. The screening is a cross-check against U.S. Government lists and does not substitute for any other background check or visa review. This process will not affect 1) enrolled students or 2) employees of Purdue, but will apply to all other international visitors. Typically, these visitors come as guests or Visiting Scholars (as described in Policy C-12). Because of increased security requirements, international visitors who are either on or affiliated with an entity on a U.S. Government restricted party list will not be authorized to visit. It is important for faculty and other university officials who may be interested in inviting international visitors to campus to know of this limitation. The process will be managed jointly by the office of International Students and Scholars (ISS) and the Export Control Team of the Office of Research and Partnerships. It will be a standardized web and e-mail system. ISS liaisons in each department will be trained to serve as primary points of contact for questions. Purdue personnel interested in hosting an international visitor will initiate the process as they do now. The Host will provide basic contact information for the international visitor to their ISS Liaison. The ISS Liaison will then enter that information into the automated system and the system will generate 2 emails: 1. Email to the Visitor – requests confirmation of the provided information and to seek additional information to allow for the screening. (Date of Birth, Home Institution, etc.) 2. Email to the Host – requests information regarding Visitor’s proposed location and duties while on campus. There will also be questions related to the Host’s lab and other projects to make sure there aren’t increased security or export control concerns. The emails will include links that will allow both the Visitor and Host to access the automated system to provide the information. This eliminates the need for multiple emails and phone calls. It also provides a more secure way of providing personal information. The responses from the Host and Visitor are both required before the process can go forward. Once the Host and the Visitor have responded, restricted party screening will be conducted, typically within 2 business days, and the ISS Liaison and Host will be informed of the result. If approved, the Invitation letter may be issued. In the event of a denial, the Export Control Team will inform the Host. Implementation will be in phases as the ISS liaisons are trained. The College of Engineering will begin immediately, and full campus-wide implementation will occur no later than March 1, 2015. Gates Dept. of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science University of California, Davis "Molecular Metal Catalysts on Supports: Organometallic Chemistry Meets Surface Science" Tuesday, January 20, 2015 9:00-10:15 a.m. FRNY G140 Reception at 8:30 a.m. in Henson Atrium Abstract: Advances in synthesis and characterization of essentially molecular metal complexes and clusters on supports are making a reality of catalyst design. We summarize work unraveling effects of the design variables of these site-isolated catalysts: the metal, metal nuclearity, support, and other ligands on the metal. The syntheses provide structurally simple, uniform species bonded to crystalline porous supports chosen for their uniformity: zeolites and MgO. The catalyst syntheses involve reactions of organometallic precursors with support surfaces; the characterization methods include IR, EXAFS, XANES, and NMR spectroscopies, atomic-resolution electron microscopy, and computations at the level of DFT. The data demonstrate high degrees of uniformity of supported species and determine their compositions and structures, including the ligands and the metal-support bonding and structure. Bio: Bruce Gates studied chemical engineering at Berkeley (B.S., 1961) and the University of Washington (PhD, 1966) and with a Fulbright grant did postdoctoral research at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich. He worked for two years as a research engineer at Chevron Research Company and began as an assistant professor at the University of Delaware in 1969, becoming the H. Rodney Sharp Professor of Chemical Engineering and Professor of Chemistry. In 1992 he joined the University of California, Davis, where he is Distinguished Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science. He has spent four sabbatical years at the Ludwig Maximilians University of Munich and was recently a guest professor at Hokkaido University. Gates's research is focused on catalysis, with an emphasis on essentially molecular metal complex and metal cluster catalysts anchored to solid surfaces and on catalytic conversion of biomass-derived compounds. He authored the textbooks "Catalytic Chemistry" and co-authored "Chemistry of Catalytic Processes." He edits the monograph Advances in Catalysis. He serves on the U.S. Department of Energy's Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Board. He has been recognized with awards from the American Chemical Society, American Institute of Chemical Engineers, the North American Catalysis Society, and the Council for Chemical Research. He is a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering.

He arrived earlier this month and is located in FRNY 2033. Some of you may recall that he completed his PhD degree (2005) with Prof. Linda Wang.
