Hello all! It's the time of year again for the annual volleyball game. This year's event is scheduled to take place on April 7th at 5:30pm in the Co-Rec East/West gyms and will go until 7pm. Faculty and staff, the best place to park is above the baseball field with the construction going on. Please email me at jwendhol(a)gmail.com<mailto:jwendhol@gmail.com> so that I may get a count as to how many people to expect. In what promises to be a competitive battle it will be interesting to see who proves to be the dominant force in chemical engineering volleyball once and for all. The undergrads will take on the graduate students in game 1 and the winner will move on to face the faculty in game 2. Rally scoring, first to win 2 sets, set 1 and 2 will go to 25 and the 3rd (if necessary) will go to 15. Graduate Student Research Awards - Thursday, March 31st at 3:30 p.m. in FRNY G140

Dear All, The recipients of the 2010 Graduate Student Awards will receive their awards on Thursday, March 31, 2011 at 3:30 p.m. in G140. Faculty Lecture Award will be awarded to Dr. Vishesh Shah and his seminar title is "Energy Savings in Distillation via Identification of Useful Configurations". The Graduate Students that are receiving Research Publication Awards are: Dr. Nanette R. Boyle, Flux balance analysis of primary metabolism in Chlamydomonas reinharditi", published in BMC Systems Biology, 2009, cited 12 times. Dr. Qijie Guo, Synthesis of Cu2ZnSnS4 Nanocrystal ink and its us4e for Solar cells", published in JACS, 2009, cited 24 times. This is considered a regular seminar and therefore it is required by grad students to attend. Russell Road (just south of the railroad tracks). The smell of gas may be detected in the area as the lines are being purged. This project is in preparation for the U.S. 231 bypass project. Performance Evaluations - Due by March 31, 2011

Dear Colleagues, It is the time to start a new round of performance evaluations for our staff. This year we will use again the online tool provided by the College of Engineering, which can be accessed at https://engineering.purdue.edu/PRS2. The tool has been significantly improved and streamlined since the 2010 evaluations and should be much easier to use than last year. I attach a list of all the staff members and their supervisors. I encourage all supervisors to start the evaluations this month and complete them by meeting with the staff members by March 31, 2011. Although it is not clear that there will be raises in 2011, the School head needs to receive from the supervisor for each supervisee a summary of the performance evaluation including: * accomplishments since the last evaluation * areas for improvement * professional development activities planned for the upcoming year. This can be the same summary that is printed from the performance review system. Invite to IDEAS 2011

The Purdue Engineering Student Council would like to personally invite the Purdue Faculty and staff to bring their kids to IDEAS 2011. This engineering based event will take place on Purdue's campus in EE 129 Saturday, April 2nd. IDEAS targets 4th and 5th grade students and introduces them to the exciting world of engineering. Students will learn about the different engineering disciplines through fun, hands-on, interactive engineering activities. This year kids will learn about earthquakes, model rockets, freezing soap bubbles and making silly putty. The best part about IDEAS, its entirely FREE! The event includes LUNCH and a T-SHIRT. Welcome to Dr. Yury Zvinevich - new position!

Dear Colleagues, I am writing to inform that Dr. Yury Zvinevich has been appointed to a new position in our School, Director of Instrumentation. This position is created by eliminating the previous position, Electronics Shop Coordinator, held by Dr. David Taylor. Dr. Zvinevich's position is 45% on School funds and the remaining on research funds. For the School portion, his duties involve maintaining the electronic aspects of both the junior Fundamentals Lab and the senior Unit Operations Lab (30%); serving the School's research needs related to electronics (10%); and serving on the Safety Cmte (5%). For the research portion, he will continue to contribute to the research efforts of Professors Ribeiro and Caruthers (55%). Please join me in welcoming Dr. Zvinevich to his new position! SATURDAY 4/2 Pugwash Annual Conference!!! ACCESS: RESOURCES, INFORMATION, AND TECHNOLOGY FOR THE WORLD Interested in Wikipedia, international development, or engineering to improve people's lives? Purdue Student Pugwash is hosting its 6th annual conference on Saturday April 2. The conference will explore the ways in which science, technology, and engineering are being used to improve the standard of living throughout the world and how millions are gaining access to clean water, electricity, Internet, education and more. Experts from across the nation will discuss issues as varied as access to clean water (featuring a director of Engineers without Borders who has led projects bringing clean water to rural Nicaragua) to food security (featuring Dr. Gebisa Ejeta, winner of the 2009 World Food Prize for his work towards securing Africa's food supply) to overcoming information censorship in autocratic nations (featuring Reporters Without Borders). Our keynote speaker is Mr. Douglas Gardner, Deputy Director of the UN Bureau of Development, who will speak on the global standard of living and progress towards achieving the Millenium Development Goals. Our closing speaker is Mr. Zach Exley, the Chief Community Officer of the Wikimedia Foundation (Wikipedia), who will speak on Wikipedia and the future of access to information worldwide. And that's just a sampling of who will be at our conference (see the attached overview and agenda for more information). Attendees also receive a catered breakfast and lunch on Saturday, a t-shirt, and access to an additional Friday talk and conference social featuring board games and pizza.
