Follow up on strong odor on second floor in FRNY (old wing)

Hello everyone, I wanted to follow up on my previous email regarding the strong odor noticed on the second floor, old wing of FRNY. The odor was due to several samples (not toxic) being overheated in an oven. The researcher performed the same experiment multiple times in the past, but at lower temperature. Today was the first time when the experiment was performed at elevated temperatures. The oven temperature was set to 180 C, and after placing the samples in the oven, the researcher monitored the experiment for 15 minutes and then left the lab. The samples were overheated and a strong odor was noticed on the corridor. The University Fire Department was called to respond to the incident, as the researcher, or the safety officer for the lab were not available. At the time the PUFD responded to this incident, the temperature in the oven was above 200 C. The fire department responded promptly, unplugged the oven, opened the windows and monitored the oven and the lab until the oven cooled down. The windows were left open to ensure proper ventilation of the lab and to aid odor dissipation. Lesson learned: Never leave an experiment unattended after you make changes to the reaction parameters, especially if it is the first time you perform the experiment with the new conditions. Perform a MOC, identify possible hazards and implement controls that will eliminate/reduce the hazards. If you work with an oven equipped with an analog temperature set system, make sure this is calibrated. Use the calibration curve to set the temperature or have other means to read the actual temperature in the oven. Thank you for your commitment to safety! Hello, I wanted to let you know that there is a bad smell coming from one of the labs on the second floor, old wing of FRNY. Please avoid the area. The fire department was informed and is on its way here. We are not evacuating the building at this point, but please be prepared to evacuate if needed. IMPORTANT REMINDER: Finance-related Transactions Impacting Faculty and Staff

Good evening, This is a gentle reminder regarding some key dates in the coming weeks regarding finance related transactions as noted in the email sent by the Provost to all faculty and staff on March 22. The Finance portion of Transform Purdue is scheduled to launch on July 1, 2018. Prior to the launch, there will be many conversion deadlines that directly affect faculty, staff and the business office. I will continue to provide updates as I receive them regarding the pause dates and interim processes. Purchasing Deadlines * Wed., April 18 — deadline to submit purchase requisitions greater than $10,000 to the central procurement mailbox for processing before July 1. * Wed., May 2 — deadline to submit purchase requisitions involving new vendors in Ariba. * Tue., May 8 — deadline for all Ariba purchase requisitions to be submitted by ChE faculty/staff/students to ensure the business office can approve by our May 9 deadline. Any requisitions not approved by May 9 will need to go back to composing status or they will be deleted. If you have routine orders that you normally would purchase in June/July, please submit by May 8 to ensure the order is approved. Transition Period Purchasing Processes We understand that critical purchases may be necessary during the transition period. More information regarding the interim purchasing process during this time will be forthcoming. However, below is a brief glance of how purchasing will be handled after May 8th. 1. Use the Purchasing credit card to purchase low-risk or small-dollar orders. 2. Use a Direct Invoice Voucher (check) to purchase low-risk items when the vendor does not accept credit cards. The vendor will be paid after July 1 if the voucher is submitted to Accounts Payable after June 1. 3. All high-risk purchases, including long-term projects, capital purchases, vendors requiring Purchase Orders and contracts, should follow the interim purchase order process, which is paper-based and will take longer due to manual processing. Other Important Deadlines * Fri., June 1 — final day Direct Invoice Vouchers (checks) to individuals or vendors will be processed by central accounts payable. * Wed. June 13— deadline for completed Travel expense reports to be submitted so the business office can approve by their June 15 deadline. Expense reports not approved by June 15 will be deleted and travelers or their delegates will have to re-submit the expense report after July 1. * Wed. June 13— deadline to submit invoices to the business office that will need to be paid via wire transfer. This will allow us to meet our June 15 processing deadline. * Fri., June 29 — deadline for work orders. After this date, emergency work orders will be submitted through Fixit. Please do not hesitate to contact the business office with any questions regarding the finance pause dates and/or transition period. Security Issue - Thefts on Campus

BE ADVISED - Starting earlier this week the Police Department has been receiving complaints of theft which have occurred. This has been mainly on the side of south campus so far but is expected to spread. They are referring to these thefts as " Snatch and Go " since they believe it is a group of individuals working as a team who go into buildings, try to blend in , observe people coming and going from their offices and labs. They signal for one to enter a room that has been left unlocked ( 5-10 seconds ), pick up anything - phones, purses, laptops, equipment, etc. and leave. The 1st passes the item to a 2nd person then on to the next and it is out of the building within minutes. Simple solution - Please make sure your doors are locked if you exit a room and no one is inside. With this weekends events of Spring Fest and Women of Engineering , which is in our building , there will be a larger than normal amount of people on campus so be aware and make sure your areas are secured.
